David Gregory recycles ‘40 percent of guns are purchased without a background check’ myth; Update: Video added

It’s liberals’ favorite gun control statistic.  Who served up the bogus statistic this time? A lowly Daily Kos blogger? A Democratic Underground commenter? No, according to Twitter user @JayCaruso, the incorrect figure was cited this morning by David Gregory, the high-profile moderator of NBC’s Meet the Press.

A “Fact” About Gun Sales That Does Not Hold Up

73% of gun owners say they purchased their firearms. Of that, 63% (not 60%) were purchased through the mail, at a gun store, a pawn shop or other store (other would be Wal-Mart, Gander Mountain, Dick’s Sporting Goods, etc.).

They show that 4% purchased their guns at a gun show. The bulk of sales at gun shows are through FFL’s. But for the sake of the whiners, let’s split it down the middle. 2% at gun shows were through FFL’s and 2% through a private sale. 29% say they acquired their gun from a friend or family member. If we deduct the 24% who say they inherited their firearms or received it as a gift, that leaves us with 5% who purchased it from a family member or friend.

So that leaves 65% of guns purchased where a background check was required. 5% of sales were done between family members and friends without a check. Another 24% were given as gifts or inherited. That leaves the final 6% which were sold in other markets or acquired through a trade.  Even if we are generous and include sales between family members and friends, we are left with a figure of eleven percent. Not forty percent.

Still not convinced? See the Washington Post, “Update: Obama claim on background checks moved from ‘verdict pending’ to 2 Pinocchios”

rather than being 30 to 40 percent (the original estimate of the range) or “up to 40 percent” (Obama’s words), gun purchases without background checks amounted to 14 to 22 percent. And since the survey sample is so small, that means the results have a survey caveat: plus or minus six percentage points.

It’s a good thing MSM outlets have layers and layers of fact-checkers:

Update:

We are removing the question mark from our headline. He said it:

Exit question: Will NBC issue a correction?

Assemble factoid, view with alarm, shout down demurrers. It’s worked for politicians since before there was a word for same. Rinse and repeat.

This lawbreaker is just like Obama.

He says whatever he read in the Huffington Enquirer or heard on the Al Sharpton Fashion Mart Hour and it’s up to the rest of the libs to defend it.

For a modern American pseudo-journalist like David Gregory, a lie is just fine if it fits the desired narrative.

    What percentage are the criminals?
Could be that 40% or in the 40%. But they are CRIMINALS not LAW abiding
    CITIZENS.

0%. Criminals don’t buy guns. They either steal them or it’s a dark alley transaction.

79% of all statistics are made up on the spot…. Just like this one was…LOL

74% of the people agree with your statement, 46% disagree and 51% are undecided.

And anything displayed on a chart with pretty colors just HAS to be true!

I remember when Gregory called in from New Dehli, India — in a professional capacity — to the Imus radio show. He was so incoherent that Imus actually had to ask in all seriousness if he (Gregory) was drunk.

I wish I could get mad at Gregory, but I’ve got nothing. He’s got a long life ahead of himself and he can always turn things around. The really sad thing is, when that episode happened on Mar 2, 2006, the immediate reaction from conservative circles was to predict that Gregory would not be fired, on the contrary he would get promoted. And of course, he did.

His network must be so proud!

  • notenoughtime

Fairminded, free thinking individuals know that responsible gun owners are just that responsible and obey the laws. Gregory would have more substance if he reported on 100% of the inner city crimes are committed with illegally purchased guns.

The 40% might work if one include the illegal guns that the owner got out the back if a van and has no paperwork connected to it to say who the last 8 owners were.

Which law will criminals follow this time. The law that say crack is illegal or the “new” law that says their guns are illegal due to the fact that they are prohibited from passing a universal background check with their multiply convictions on drug felonies.

Why would NBC issue a correction? If Dear Leader says something, it must be true.

  • sqeptiq

Given that you can buy a gun from a stranger through a classified ad with no ID check, it’d make sense to abolish background checks altogether. They’re a waste of money because so easily avoided.

i’ve bought many guns at stores and at gun shows. i’m still trying to find this loophole the left wing fanatics always talk about. not only did I have to do a background check I had waiting the 2 days waiting period also and that includes rifles bought at a gun show.
