Stop, our aching sides! PETA tweeted that out the other day. Did they forget that, you know, Obama ate a dog?

SA, When I was still in the Navy I drove my boat past their HQ building about once a week. It’s a multi-million dollar, multi-story building on prime, waterfront property in downtown Norfolk. I’m not sure what they pay in property tax, but it’s got a be a big chunk.

The last time I saw that building was around 2000, and it had been there for a while. I don’t know anyone who donates to them, but their money isn’t going for animal protection.

They have gotten more starlets to disrobe in public than Hugh Hefner, so there’s that.

    • Lady_Clare

I know. The irony is pretty thick all around on this one. PETA’s on the record as being FOR kill shelters and actively fights against no-kill advocates. They make me puke. As does Obama, come to think of it….

I’m pretty sure PETA does advocate eating dogs. It’s better than keeping them as slaves!!!1111!!!1!!!!111

I’m not inclined to take pet advice from a pet pandering, economic incompetent who is responsible for an economy that prevents many struggling families and singles from even considering pet ownership.

I’ve lost track of the number of people I’ve spoken to in the past year who would love a pet but can’t justify the expense because they’re struggling to make ends meet. Instead of commentary on pet care, how about getting an unemployment rate into the 6’s for the first time in half a decade so pets can leave shelters and actually find homes? As most pet owners know, caring for your loved one properly doesn’t come on the cheap.

When people lose $50-100/month in income due to increased taxes and cost of living variances, the foot traffic in animal shelters decreases significantly and far too many loving dogs and cats are put down.

  • sqeptiq

If you accept eating pigs, it’s mindless sentimentalism to condemn eating dogs. Pigs after all are smarter animals.

    • http://twitter.com/thetugboatphil TugboatPhil

I’ll grant you that, but dogs and cats have a furry cuteness that pigs don’t. My theory is that those characteristics is what made us treat them as companions around the campfire instead of eating them.

    • aegean1

No, it’s not. Dogs are raised as pets, (most) pigs are raised as food. Would I eat a pig someone had raised as a pet? NO. It’s a pet. I believe the key word here is “nuance?”

      • sqeptiq

Agree. I wouldn’t condone stealing and eating someone’s dog either. That’s cruelty to the owners and theft besides. However I have no objection to raising and slaughtering pigs or dogs for meat. All this talk about Obama having eaten dog as a lad has made me curious to try it. Maybe I should have some Wiener Shihtzu. It’s worth a try, even though I doubt I’ll like it as much as bacon.

        • Hiraghm

I imagine dog tastes like long pork. why don’t you give that a try?

      • Hiraghm

Dogs were bred as working animals, as companions, and imbued with those qualities we value most… loyalty, courage, devotion, perseverance, compassion, and more.

        Pigs were bred to eat.

      • sqeptiq

You can care about animals to a high degree and still eat meat, including pork and dog. I eat meat and support some legislation against animal cruelty (dog-fighting, notably) and in favor of animal welfare. I’ll never make PETA happy, and that’s ok: those people are bonkers. They demand you go vege and embrace animal *rights*. No way.

        • Lady_Clare

I think animals have the right to be treated humanely. I also think that everyone who wants to advocate against animal cruelty needs to tour a factory farm and spend a week working at you average slaughterhouses. Most wouldn’t get past the first day. There are some real sadists in a lot of them that really, REALLY enjoy their work. Wake up: Animal cruelty isn’t restricted to the dog- or cock-fighting ring.

          • sqeptiq

I didn’t say animal cruelty was limited to dog-fighting. I just used it as an example. I’m all for improving the treatment of animals being raised for food.

        • Hiraghm

Nope. If you eat dog, you are a subhuman creature fit only for crawling on your belly.

          • Sons Thunder

While I don’t (knowingly) eat dog or horse meat, my reservations are due to the culture in which I was raised.

Furthermore, Obama lived in Indonesia between the ages of 6 and 10. When I was that age, I ate what my parents fixed. While I can appreciate why people like to make jokes about it, are you really condemning Obama for what he ate when he was 10 years old?

    • Hiraghm

Don’t be ridiculous. If you accept eating pigs, I can see accepting eating humans, but dogs aren’t food.

    • CatHerder

Dogs are hunting partners and social animals. They bond with humans and accept us as part of their pack. They are loyal unto death.

Pigs are smarter, yes. Smart enough to know why they are being kept. And they will turn the idea around on you in a heartbeat, given half a chance.

      • sqeptiq

Saying it’s ok to eat a smarter animal but not a dumber one because people in your part of the world tend to keep them as pets, is a dodgy principle. Animals deemed fit/forbidden for eating also vary by culture and religion.

Don’t approve of eating dog? Cool! Don’t eat any.

Just FYI, last year PETA ‘humanely euthanized’ 91% of the animals they ‘rescued’. An 9% success rate for the animal-hypocricats? They kill more animals than any other group except municipal shelters. Kind of like Planned Parenthood is ‘humane’ in its treatment of the unborn helpless, and people killed by murders with guns is something horrific…(it’s not GUN violence– it’s PEOPLE violence) PETA is Planned Parenthood for animals…..

    • Lady_Clare

Comparing their animal holocaust to the human one carried out at Planned Parenthood is very apt.

  • Michael Rice

And the sad truth is, these PETA nuts treat dogs, cats, horses, snails, and flys better than they do their own kids.

    • Lady_Clare

PETA advocates Kill Shelters. Your statement is accurate only if the “PETA nuts” kill their own kids.

      • JustLikeAnimals

PETA nuts are the same libertards that kill 2.1 million babies every year, so…..yeah.

    • Hiraghm

well I can see treating dogs better than kids. Dogs make better pets…

Obama’s advice for how to treat animals:

    1 clove garlic (minced)
    1 chopped onion (fine)
    1 tbsp tyme
    1 tbsp cumin
    1/4 cup cilantro
    1 tsp paprika
    1/4 cup balsalmic vinegar

    1. Mix ingredients into a paste.
    2. Rub evenly over entire animal.
    3. Hang over smoke for 24 hours.
    4. Salt and pepper to taste
    5. Eat and enjoy.
