Sequestration scare campaign rebooted; Headlines foretell ‘real damage’ on the way

At CPAC, Sen. Ted Cruz noted that conservatives have been “winning” lately, citing the sequestration cuts as a victory for the House GOP. The White House (with NPR’s help) had tried to paint the cuts as disastrous and pin them on the Republicans, despite the fact that the sequester was the president’s idea. Then, sequestration took effect, and it didn’t quite have the apocalyptic meteor-strike effect that many had been led to expect.

Don’t get cocky, though, Sen. Cruz. The first act in Sequester Theater, in which the White House closed its doors to public tours, was a public relations disaster for Obama, but Republicans are in for a beating when the real cuts start rolling in. The Washington Post’s Greg Sargent has compiled a list of headlines warning of the “real damage” on the horizon.

That’s right: the Sioux City Journal reports that “furloughs could lead to bootleg meat.” Iowa’s in for double the pain, as the Des Moines Register reports that “Federal budget cuts creep into Iowa.” How’s that for a striking headline?

Huffington Post’s Sam Stein had his own striking headline to add young human faces to the equation: “Head Start Programs Gutted By Sequestration Cuts.” And by gutted, he means, “a Head Start program near Fayetteville, Ark., has decided to take the dramatic step of closing its classrooms for the summer 13 days earlier than planned.” That’s only one instance, though, and if you do the math — multiply programs, days, children, etc. — and you’ll end up with a pretty big number. But “gutted”?

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney’s not giving up yet.

Jay Carney is one smug arrogant bastard. Could he be more condescending ? Who cares about headstart ? It’s a waste and has been proven that the kids who go through it are at a disadvantage once they get to grade school. It’s like affirmative action for toddlers
And as far as furloughed air traffic controllers are concerned , that was a move clearly aimed at the American public to make us suffer and feel inconveniences.
Just how stupid do they think we are ??
Even some libs are waking up to the huge waste in government spending and bull-**** studies using taxpayer money

Could you share a link to the studies that show that Head Start is responsible for putting kids at a disadvantage? That is just the kind of thing that would really shut up those whining liberals for good. You know, real science that demonstrates clearly how Head Start is responsible for the disadvantages of those children. Not the circumstances into which they were born, but the actual existence of Head Start in their lives. This is just what we need. Please share the link(s) so I can use it (them) to bash those liberals into silence.

No need to “bash those liberals into silence.” Even wiki gets it right. Here is what it says:

Studies on the long-term effectiveness of Head Start are mixed.

        DHHS 2011 study

A 2011 report by the Department of Health and Human Services, Head Start Impact, examined the cognitive development, social-emotional development, and physical health outcomes of Head Start students as compared to a control group that attended private preschool or stayed home with a caregiver.

Head Start students were split into two distinct cohorts – 3-year-olds
with two years of Head Start before kindergarten, and 4-year-olds with
only one year of Head Start before kindergarten. The study found:

Though the program had a “positive impact” on children’s experiences
through the preschool years, “advantages children gained during their
Head Start and age 4 years yielded only a few statistically significant
differences in outcomes at the end of 1st grade for the sample as a
whole. Impacts at the end of kindergarten were scattered…”

After first grade, there were no significant social-emotional impacts for the cohort of 4-year-olds, and mixed results on measures of shyness, social withdrawal and problematic student-teacher interactions. The cohort of 3-year-olds with two years of Head Start attendance, however, manifested less hyperactive behaviors and more positive relationships with parents.

By the end of first grade, only “a single cognitive impact was found for each cohort.” Compared to students in the control group, the 4-year-old Head Start cohort did “significantly better” on vocabulary and the 3-year-old cohort tested better in oral comprehension.

The study concludes, “Head Start has benefits for both 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds in the cognitive, health, and parenting domains, and for 3-year-olds in the social-emotional domain. However, the benefits of access to Head Start at age four are largely absent by 1st grade for the program population as a whole. For 3-year-olds, there are few sustained benefits, although access to the program may lead to improved parent-child relationships through 1st grade, a potentially important finding for children’s longer term development.”[11]

As I said some number of months ago … “the idiot flying the plane has informed us that there will be a great deal of turbulence on the way to the big hole we are going to dig on impact.”

And as I said then … lets get this show on the road, I’m too old to wait much longer.

Hope Harry doesn’t get the assault weapons ban passed, I’ll need my AR-15 to protect the old meat still.

    • SpinMeNot

Well if he does, just remember what is good for the goose is good for the gander.

My weapons will not be illegal, they will undocumented. At least they don’t need health care, I can maintain them just fine.

  • Rulz

What an evil philosophy the Democrat Party has.

  • AZWarrior

Head Start provides no lasting advantage to children. It does provide taxpayer funded day care for the poor.

  • Stupid Republic

Here’s how we close the budget gap in one shot:

Auction off the opportunity to wipe the smug look off Jay Carney live on TV.

    • CatHerder

Will the bidding be fast and furious?

      • Jim Denney

We’ll never know, the auction will be held behind closed doors at an undisclosed location & all records will be sealed. The only thing we know for sure is you can bid from the WH Lincoln bedroom if you donate $500,000.00 to OFA.

  • CR

Am I the only one who when I see all of these things the government is paying for (like failed preschool programs) my only thought is way the g.d. heck are we paying for that in the FIRST PLACE? Can someone, somewhere, point me to the clause in the constitution guaranteeing the right to free preschool or giving the federal government the authority to tax some citizens to pay for preschool for others? I will wait.

    • Jim Denney

I was gonna provide you with a comprehensive list, but the mean ‘ol GOP limits all of us victims to only 200 free minutes on our BamaFons. Plus, the WiFi is down again here at my favorite Starbucks, so I’ll have to get back to you next month.

Say, in the meantime, can I borrow a twenty? I’m out of beer & smokes … I’ll pay you back Friday when my next unemployment check comes in. Thx bro-FORWARD!

MSM is the mouth of obama and only says what the king wants.

  • kim

Headstart? Gut it. Eliminate it. Hasn’t done a damned thing except babysit kids

    • catb55

No they also INDOCTRINATE children .. remember food, phones, babysitting … etc .. all comes from the government .. making kids dependent on gov’t is the goal .. not REAL education.

  • Calcat36

Reagan fired ATC’s to stop them from damaging an entire industry through the union at the risk of political expense. Ozero “sequesters” them in order to damage the entire industry for political gain. Head start needs to be permanently sequestered to save money, and take the “chip” off of the sympathy table, denying liberals the opportunity to brand republicans as not caring for the children. The children that are used as pawns by the leftists for their agenda.
