#SequesterThis: Sen. Tom Coburn wants RoboSquirrel on the chopping block

The Obama administration’s sequestration scare campaign fizzled out early and even backfired Tuesday, as the president took a solid PR hit for closing down White House tours and blaming budget cuts (and then reportedly scheduling another Martha’s Vineyard getaway for the family).

Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn has been pushing a #SequesterThis hashtag campaign to suggest alternative cuts that wouldn’t cause pain to the public at large, and it’s slowly picking up steam.

The Wall Street Journal pitched in with an editorial this week naming a wine-tasting event as a possible swap to pay for the tours.

In its bid to make the sequester as painful as possible, the White House announced Tuesday that it is canceling all visitor tours of the White House “during the popular Spring touring season.” This fits President Obama’s political strategy to punish the eighth graders visiting from Illinois instead of, say, the employees of the Agriculture Department who will attend a California conference sipping “exceptional local wines” and sampling “tasty dishes” prepared by “special guest chefs.”

Coburn is rolling out other #SequesterThis recommendations from his “2012 Waste Book,” including a tour by the Watermelon Queen “to promote the consumption of Alabama’s watermelons”and a $325,000 grant to construct a robot squirrel.

How soon until #SaveRoboSquirrel starts trending?

Time to expose every single penny of waste and call the offending parties out!!!!

    • independentjones

Really! Could there be anything more non-essential and appropriately distracting than a robo-SQUIRREL?!

    • conservativechick

I think there are plenty of places to cut spending! (I got suspended again from twitter) UGH Why do Conservatives always get the ax?

  • RightThinking1

Less talk about sequestration, more talk about defenestration.

  • RightThinking1

In case you did not see it. Note particularly the sentence:
“So it is our opinion that however you manage that reduction, you need to make sure you are not contradicting what we said the impact would be.

    My emphasis.

For the past three years, Eric Cantor has been operating a website called “You Cut” where he offers the public a “choice” of programs with their price tags that you can “vote” to cut. Non-binding of course, but it illustrates the massive waste and bloat of our government.

As to the closing of the WH tours, why aren’t they operating a gift shop (off grounds if necessary) with proceeds of souvenir sales going to fund the tours?

The treatment of our troops and their families is so shameful I can’t imagine anyone defending it. Can no one make the case that only an incompetent moron (or worse) would allow this to happen?

Congressman John Campbell says that there really isn’t any cost to the tours:

“…White House tours don’t cost anything. There are no tour guides except for a few unpaid docents. If you have been on one, you know that it is a self-guided tour. There are Secret Service agents in each room, but the Secret Service is largely exempt from the Sequester. Of course, there is a security check when you enter, but those checks are always there for people entering the White House on business. So, to save no money at all, President Obama told 92 children who flew 2500 miles from a school in Orange County, CA that they cannot see the people’s house this weekend. Upsetting children is worthy of the “all great and powerful Oz”, but not a president.

And did you all hear the story on Rush the other day of the lady with a chronic illness (not sure what it is, only caught part of the story) and her husband is deployed overseas. Her doctor told her that because of the Sequester, he could not give her a referral to a specialist? …..only heard bits and pieces about this so don’t quote me……….

      • nc

I did, it broke my heart.

How could our “compassionate” President, who made time to call Sandra Fluke, allow this to happen????? Our government is a model of efficiency that is pared to the bone? Riiiight.

  • SpinMeNot

Let us not forget that the $70K spent to pay for that TV spot in Pakistan where HRC and BHO apologized for a video that no one saw, would have funded the WH tours for 3 weeks .. or paid for Moochelle’s leg waxings … ok, well, it would have paid for part of one.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. The first agency we could do 100% without is USDA. They don’t support ag anymore, they’re the “food stamp people”. Ever wonder why you can buy soda made with corn syrup using Food Stamps, but toilet paper is “you’re on your own”? Because it’s a USDA program. I’m in farm country btw.

Of course the RINOs are all ooohing and aahing over Obama’s talking to them… I think the Elephant needs replaced with a Cave as the logo.

#SequesterThis: star studded birthday bash at the White House for Michelle Obama’s 50th birthday (ironically no money for the public to tour the WH).
