CBS News’ Sharyl Attkisson reviews the many still-unanswered questions about Benghazi terror attack

David Petraeus has resigned. Hillary Clinton has jumped ship, and just doesn’t understand what difference, at this point, it makes anyway. Leon Panetta has retired to his family’s walnut farm. Is anyone left to answer all of the still-unanswered questions about the deadly Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans?

Sharyl Attkisson is one of only a handful of journalists still bothering to ask the questions, although she’s getting little help from the most transparent administration ever.

Kudos to Attkisson for continuing to ask the questions despite the administration’s mostly successful campaign to run out the clock while the public loses interest. What difference does it make? ANSWERED. It’s makes all the difference.

Sharyl Attkisson doing a great job keeping their feet to the fire. Need more journalist like her to get answers to all them unanswered question.
    Bravo Sharyl.

In general, I agree with your serious posts, laugh at your humor till scotch/beer/soda/tea squirts out my nose, and ponder your insightful comments, but I have to say I think you are missing the bigger picture here. Any journalist that questions the Obama administration is either thrown under the bus [c.f., Bob Woodward] or subjected to an ad hominen bombardment that effectively renders their work null and void to the vast majority of the population.

How can you hold someone’s feet to a fire that they refuse to see? After the Hillary tantrum of “what does it matter who killed them?!?!”, nothing that is discovered will ever be used in a criminal case. BHO, with the enthusiastic support of EH, has flaunted the law, the Constitution and truth from day one. He has violated his Oath of Office soo many times that I’ve given up keeping track of them. He has betrayed the men and women he sends into harms way on numerous occasions.

I’m a tired old man that gave half his life to serving this country. At this point in time, I say give them everything they want, and let the good times roll. Logic has proven useless, lets see if they can learn from experience.

      • https://twitter.com/tweetyuo Tangchung

Appreciate your comment and grateful for your service. I agree with most your comments except one of my points is needing more journalist like Sharyl. With media/public pressure sometimes results in justice.
The Woodward situation might have a different effect then the past journalist that been thrown under the bus for questioning if the king wore clothing. I’m hoping for others that been intimidated by the Obama thugs to come forward and start maybe digging in an holding some patch of journalistic ground and start speaking up. It’s a long shot but might happen. Just a thought.

I don’t dispute the plausibility of the scenario, and I admire the fact that you can hold the optimism for a better outcome. I’ve reached that point that I can’t. I hope that I am proven wrong, and you are proven to be correct.

Sometimes I feel the despair you feel, but then I think maybe it’s the dark before the dawn.

I saw your response earlier today, and thought, “hey, that is a good point” and then I saw the news that BHO promised to veto the Republican Senate proposal to give him authority and accountability. He prefers a bill that raises taxes and will cut spending over the next ten years. And I’m thinking night is just beginning to fall.

He got what, $69B in new taxes last month, and now he wants more and promises spending cuts? How did this country get this stupid this quickly.

            Holy crap on a cracker.

          • nc

God bless you, sir. After all you’ve given you deserve so much more.

At this point in time, I say give them everything they want, and let the good times roll. Sadly, I find myself in agreement with this sentiment and I only served 6 years.

        • SpinMeNot

Only served 6 years, I am sorry, but there is no only. You served. It doesn’t matter if you were injured in boot and detached, or washed out The effort was made, I am proud to know you, virtually or otherwise and will forever consider you a brother.

          • NRPax

Oh don’t get me wrong: I’m proud that I served, even if I joke that my contribution to Marine Corps history is a footnote at best. But after seeing what is going on with Congress, I’m honestly of the mind that we need to let some burning happen to clear out the rot.

And thank you for your service as well.

Today has been a good day for America. Between Sharyl Atkisson and Bob Woodward, my faith in the existence of true journalism is restoring.

I agree, might be a crack in the journalist dam.

        • $23089169

I’m praying! God help Obama if that dam breaks and the depth of the corruption of this administration is exposed.

I’m not convinced about Woodward yet. I don’t doubt he does a huge backtrack on this in a few days. Think Charlie Brown, Lucy and the football.

        • SpinMeNot

You are correct to be wary of Mr. Woodward, the full interview includes his making it clear that BHO was not involved, it was just an aide.

Regardless, there is a lesson here. I’ve seen this before. It didn’t end well.

  • tree hugging sister

Can we quit banging on CBSNews incessantly, too? Their broadcasts have lost a good deal of the hard left tinge (witness Sharyl here) and they even had a coherent member of society on to explain why he likes his AR-15. We switched to them after 30+ years of watching ABCs World News Tonight because we could not take one second more of Sawyer’s revolting insipidness, and have been pleasantly surprised by Pelly’s evenhanded broadcast 90% of the time.

    • Garym

Or better yet, stop watching broadcast news altogether………

I’d like to know what has happened to the man who made the video. I know he was arrested for parole violations, but nothing has been said since.

    • Michelle

In November 2012, he pled guilty to violating the terms of his probation and was sentenced to a year in prison and then 4 yrs of probation upon his release.

      • http://twitter.com/thetugboatphil TugboatPhil

And just as is done with all parole violators of non-violent crimes, he was arrested with a large contingent of Sheriff’s Deputies in the middle of the night.

        • Michelle

He’s actually the one who called the Sheriff’s Department to turn himself in and asked them to come get him because he feared for his life. When the deputies went to his home to bring him in for questioning, the number of deputies you see surrounding him was for his protection because he’d received death threats. In the video of him being surrounded by deputies as he walks out of his home and into a car, you see he’s not even handcuffed – his hands are in the pockets of his jacket. The scene to which you refer – he wasn’t being arrested, he was being bought in for questioning, he asked them to come get him. Watch the video – you’ll see he’s not handcuffed by the deputies. They were there to provide safe transport so he was not killed or harmed.

Thanks for that! That part of the story either didn’t make it to Virginia, or I missed it when it happened.

          • Michelle

We can blame it on MSM! They portrayed it as sheriff’s swarmed his house and took him into custody. Naw, didn’t happen that way – HE called them and said please come get me and he wasn’t even handcuffed. The media, in this case NBC, even got it wrong in that video – he wasn’t being arrested (that came later after being questioned and it was decided he violated his probation). Law enforcement here was very concerned about his safety. Even after he was arrested, deputies kept him separate from other inmates (many of whom were Muslim) so that he would not be harmed.

I think he should be released now since DHS is so happy to release actual criminals due to sequester. Seems to me it could save us some money to release people who made videos in violation of parole.

The criminals have to be here illegally to qualify.

Federal agencies have to respond to FOIA requests within 30 days. Sometimes it’s a “give us more time”, which only delays a response a little. CBS knows this…file the lawsuit. Other news organizations will join the suit so as to avoid a bad precedent being set…and might force them to do a little “journalism”. File the suit. Force a response.

Edit: I apologize to our regulars for being verbose below but the Woodward interview last night really hit me and I slammed the keyboard for a few moments until I felt I had said enough. I’m a bit invested in this topic so to those who grant me the generosity of your time, I am humbled.

Perhaps Woodward and Attkisson’s vigor in asking the tough questions and not simply repeating administration narratives, will awake the fourth estate from their five long years of Van Winkle-esque slumber where the lust for being a part of good history has made them a slave to it. Is it possible the nation’s journalists, motivated by a renewed dedication to the spirit of what the quill and scroll represents, will fulfill their obligation to the American citizenry to report the news as it occurs and not how an administration wants it to occur?

Benghazi would be a great place to start. Who else among you will ask the tough questions?

I still haven’t forgotten what I learned in journalism school three decades ago.

“Who, What, When, Where, Why and How.”

That roadmap would lead any reporter to their destination….the truth. For the young journalists out there…and yes, the older, jaded ones….so much yearning for another Camelot, if you truly take pride in your craft, just report. You needn’t do anything more.

Ask the tough questions…and that will be enough.

This nation was formed in no small part, due to the tenacity of men and women not afraid to speak…to demand answers. Our nation’s first journalists…the writers…the orators. They laid the foundation for future generations of inspired journalists. My own inspiration was Walter Cronkite, a wartime correspondent and the reason I wrote for the military. I wanted to write in far off lands about modern day patriots. But this isn’t about me, it’s about you.

As for the old guard…return to why you became a reporter in the first place. Return to the tough questions…find renewed inspiration and feed off of it. For the students of this noble profession, at the risk of being accused of pandering, following Michelle’s body of work provides a wonderful blueprint. There are others. Find them. They are waiting.

…and to hell with shielding our own party from critique. If reporting news would reveal ineffective governance from the right, it is every bit as important to the citizenry as impotent governance from the left. We have to stop treating news as if it’s an affair that forever needs protection from revelation. The truth, no matter how unfavorable to power, should never come with an expiration date.

Returning to Benghazi, the departed Sec. of State declared: “What difference…at this point…does it make?”

Journalists, the families of four dead Americans are still looking for answers whilst people in power are threatening your very own. The difference…at this point…is YOU.

I’m going to end by elasticizing an original thought from Anaïs Nin in memory of the four patriots who died in Libya with a hope it inspires even one reporter to become more engaged in asking the tough questions.

“The role of a journalist is not to ask what we all can ask, but what others are unable to ask.”

Sorry Maxx, the only journalist of old I see is Sharyl, who reported this before the election. All of the others were too busy trying to get someone of “OUR” own party reelected. Woodward and others cannot report much on Benghazi even now because it would raise the question, “why”? Or more accurately, “why now”? They knew enough prior to Nov 6 to report, chose not to, and continue to hope it goes away.
Otherwise, how many others of “our own” party might be affected?

  • $24414377

Kenai, earlier reporting had him meeting with a Turkish General for some reason. No other reasons have been provided that I recall.

    Three more questions:

    1. Who and where are the survivors of the Bengahazi massacre and why are they being sequestered from the press?

    2. Was Ambassador Stevens sodomized as widely reported in the international press?

    3. Was there a prison with (or without) Islamic militants in it at (or near) the CIA Annex as reported by author/reporter/Petraeus girlfriend Paula Broadwell?

In my opinion and others Benghazi cover up was about—
Munitions running from Libya (Gaddafi’s stash) on ships to Turkey then sent on to the Syrian rebels who are al Qaeda! So Obama is sending arms to the enemy!

Steven had dinner with a Turkey official, who left right before the attack happened.
A woman with the last name of Lamb said she watched the attack IN REAL TIME!
Where has that woman gone and why wasn’t she called to testify! Sec. Clinton said there was NO REAL TIME VIDEO!!! REALLY??? Ms. Lamb was lying? Doubt it.
Clinton got her “VIDEOS MIXED UP”?!? She must have as she seemed soooo confused when asked about it!!
There have been FOUR 4/5 star Generals and one Admiral who have been relieved of their duties and commands since this happened—WHY!!
The STAND DOWN ORDERS and everything else is A COVER UP ABOUT THE MUNITIONS RUNNING TO OUR ENEMY al QAEDA!
AIDING AND ABETTING THE ENEMY IS A TREASONOUS OFFENSE AND THE WHOLE BUNCH WHO WERE INVOLVED IN THIS COVER UP SHOULD BE TRIED FOR TREASON!!
    WE MUST DEMAND THE TRUTH!
Everybody who was involved has jumped ship but that shouldn’t matter as it’s what they did WHILE they held those jobs that count! Clinton kept delaying the hearings as it must have been very time consuming in getting everything straight to try to conform with all of the lies they had previously told!
The truth would have been simple—BUT DAMNING FOR OBAMA!

I am being victimized by people associated with both the Romney and Obama campaigns. Some sound like “economists” and some sound like people I used to work for at my earlier employers. They could have done the security leaks which caused the security level to fall. And, now are doing all they can to shut me up. They created statistics based software to “tune” Romney’s message but that did not include shame or reputation..so all those flip flops…
