Dude, where’s my refund? IRS overwhelmed by requests leaving many filers frustrated

But don’t worry your pretty little heads about the Internal Revenue Services’s involvement in implementing the Obamacare mandate. It’ll go swimmingly.

The tax filing season was delayed this year as the IRS, tax preparers and software companies struggled to catch up with fiscal cliff-related tax code changes.

The IRS didn’t begin accepting individual taxpayer returns until Jan. 30, and now the agency is reportedly way behind on issuing refunds. That’s not working out so well for retailers like Walmart.

The IRS is so swamped by requests, the call center is unable to keep up with the demand.

Great idea! Point frustrated taxpayers to the IRS website!

Many tax filers, already frustrated by higher payroll taxes and insurance premiums, are left wondering when they’ll finally see those refunds they’re expecting.

We’re sure the White House will get right on that.

  • http://twitter.com/conservag Aaron

We so desperately need a legit, flat tax code in this country. The government should be taking the exact amount of taxes from my paycheck that I owe and be done with it. This tax refund game is absurd.

Full Disclosure: I got my refund like 2 weeks ago. Na-na-na-poo-poo!

    • Paladin

Getting an “AMEN!” from the choir over here.
And yeah, I just got my refund.

FWIW, I use the simple form. Two years I did itemized deductions and it didn’t make much of a difference. The simple form saves me so much headache and time that I don’t mind the little extra the gobblement gets to keep. (Not that it helps them out anyway.)

      • MohammedTheTeddyBear

Very true, Paladin, not sure why most folks don’t do the same. Filed it through TurboTax, and got my $1 refund not even two weeks later……

        • Blake Waymire

I did the simple form last week with a $900 refund (part of that is EIC, I admit), but I am cautious enough with money that I don’t actually need it. It’s going right into my savings. Better sitting there than in Obama’s incapable hands.

    • NachoCheese (D)

      taxes from my paycheck

We should stop taxing productive efforts all together and start taxing consumption. End the income tax, national sales tax.

That way everyone will actually “pay their fair share”.

      • Infinite_Indeterminism

Lots of smugglers – and why punish people with large families while shielding loner misers ?

Income tax, one base deduction per taxpayer, one deduction per dependant, fixed rate of what’s taxable – that would be a sensible approach, because it would shield base income, distribute burden according to ability without overdoing that part, and the only incentive (assuming rate is sensible) would be to earn more.

    • $36544368

Agreed. I wish we had a flat tax…it would be SOOO much easier!

    • NRPax

I do like the notion of a flat tax. The only stipulation I have would be this: You get to keep all the money you have earned but you have to cut a check every quarter just like any business owner. That forces people to see just how much money is being spent and folks can start asking uncomfortable questions of Congress regarding it.

      • http://twitter.com/conservag Aaron

This would be fantastic, and would immediately enact real change.

Unfortunately, most people wouldn’t hold onto their cash to pay their taxes when the bill finally came and that would be an even bigger mess than this refund game.

But this is a brilliant idea. I’d vote for the politician that proposes this in a heartbeat.

Yup. Government “Efficiency” at work. The IRS is a broken government agency, you would think they could be a bit more modern…. Plus their customer service is some shit. Angry, mean rude people.

      • NRPax

In all fairness, they have been broken for years. And the argument about modernization would be along the lines of “This will cost money so we need to raise taxes for it.”

Right now, I’m waiting to see how long my refund will take. Still waiting for the end results of the paperwork.

I adjusted my exemptions/witholdings on W4 so that I owe at the end of the year. That way, I have use of MY earnings throughout the year rather than having to wait for the gov’t to get around to paying me back….without interest, by the way.

    • fivebyfive

I’m doing that this year although I received my refund 2 weeks ago(I filed before the end of jan.)

    • John

thats a good way to go!

  • kim

somehow I get the idea that each of these people are not only expecting back what they paid in, but expecting a big fat EIC payment too.

    • Josh

I am getting an EIC and why should I not. I paid into taxes all year, I work full time at a minimum wage job, I am in school full time, and I work my ass off why should I not get some funds back?

  • MohammedTheTeddyBear

Don’t know what the problem is, as I filed back in January and got my $1 refund (yes, really!) not even two weeks later……

  • sacha

First, I would have to ask those folks who are tweeting about their IRS refunds being delayed WHO DID YOU VOTE FOR? If you voted for Obama I thought you liked to pay taxes because as VP Joe Biden said It is patriotic to pay your taxes. So, you Obama voters should suck it up and start singing patriotic songs while you wait for your IRS refund.

If you guys don’t like waiting for your refund from the IRS you are really going to be pissed when Obamacare is fully implemented next year, and you have to wait several days if not weeks to see a doctor. Then wait months for treatment and/or surgery. All this after paying higher premiums, higher co-pays or pay more out of pocket for your affordable Obamacare.

BTW checkout the Wall Street Journal Market watch article how the increased fees employers have to pay to cover spouses is causing employers to drop their employees’ spouses from their health insurance plans. Thanks again King Barry the One for higher costs for health insurance, less access to doctors, and IPAB which will turn a great health care system into crap.

    • Josh

Paying your taxes is patriotic, without taxes we could not have roads, police, and many other things we need everyday. You blame Obama but congress are the ones who pushed us to the cliff and correct me if I am wrong but do republicans not control the house? Seems to me you need to look up some facts buddy and stop always blaming Obama for everything. I did not vote for him nor do I like him but everyone acts as if he has a magical wand that he controls everything, well he does not is the congress that does they have the final say.

  • Joe W.

Maybe if y’all lived within your means, you wouldn’t be so stressed out having to wait a couple weeks for a lousy tax refund??

    • $36544368

That’s true, but sometimes things don’t add up. For example, hubby and I have two dependent children. That entitles us to claim Married – 4. When his paycheck has Married-4 taxes deducted from his check, we end up owing. So we claim Married – 2 on his paychecks, and we end up getting a refund every year, just to be ‘safe’ and not owe when April 15th rolls around. While we don’t ‘depend’ on that money, we do expect it, and it helps with medical bills, etc.

      • Joe W.

Understood. My point was that these Tweeters were screaming as if their very existence depended upon their refunds being processed immediately. I recall not too long ago that refunds took 6-8 weeks to process. While I can appreciate the anticipation of receiving said refund, to be so dependent upon and upset that it is delayed, speaks volumes about the finances of the recipients. Obama voters, for the most part, I’ll wager..

      • TomJB

You should really consider changing to 4. Even if you just put the excess in the bank, you will get interest on it and come out ahead.

        • fivebyfive

That 1% will really add up(sic)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Marcy-Cook/1001619613 Marcy Cook

Aw heck…no one, not even the low information voters, want to PAY THEIR FAIR SHARE?

  • Alan

What I find amusing is that most of these people likely voted for Obama! Welcome to the new America! Just wait till Obamacare kicks in; you’re just gonna love it!!! Be careful what you wish for…

  • $36544368

I feel really bad posting this, but my husband and I already got our federal and state refunds. I filed electronically (via TurboTax) on 1/26, but our returns weren’t processed until 1/31. We got our refunds on 2/5. We have dependents and filed standard deductions and exemptions this year instead of itemizing due to financial issues that made it better for us to do it that way. Maybe that’s why we got the refunds back quickly – we didn’t have extra schedules to attach to the return this year. We don’t have a business, don’t file for/not eligible for EIC, etc. I’ve never gotten my refund so fast. My sister and mom also got their refunds already as well. I’m really sorry for everyone who is having to wait!!!

    • Kyle Schroeck

What these people (low information) don’t realize that if you claimed any education credits, the IRS did not begin processing until Feb 14. My taxes were accepted that day and I will have my refund Monday the 25th. It’s all very simple.

      • $36544368

Agreed…it’s just too bad that the ‘low info’ voters don’t take a little more time to think through their choices and decisions. Not only do they have to live with them, but WE have to live with them (the voters and the choices!) as well.

  • GeorgieGirl9

B happy you’re getting a refund! Those of us paying for you are just sitting here working.

    • zzyzxroad

My hubby and I paid $46,000 in fed income tax. We got $3800 refund. How does that fit into your claim that you’re paying for us?

      • $36544368

Same here. And we didn’t make anywhere near $200k!!! We paid almost the same taxes as you and got back almost the same refund amount.

        • zzyzxroad

I can’t bring myself to give you a thumbs up because having to pay that much to fed gov (especially when you didn’t even crack $200,000) is just plain disgusting.

          • $36544368

What’s worse is we didn’t even crack $150K. Maybe if you can’t give me a thumbs up, could you give the government a thumbs down?

          • zzyzxroad

Yep. 2 thumbs down and a couple of birds. 😋

    • PS

Wow so much hate here on this site. What is happening? You are angry that people who work for less get returns…you are happy that people that have very little will have to use there returns for health care?? Be glad that you are blessed and can pay things. Some good people have lost jobs that have worked all of their lives…been faithful employees. Some have faced health issues…What are you going to say to me…I am in your party but I refuse to be a part of the hate…I did not vote for Obama…but I am not in agreement with this….I am seeing the hate everywhere. People making fun of people on food stamps…as if they are not trying….Making fun of the poor is never right. and you do not know their personal circumstances…

      • stillinthe60s

And you make an ad hominen attack about me hating without you knowing my personal circumstances. Hypocrite! If your panties get twisted into such a tight wad reading about all the “hate” because we all don’t heart bleed to your satisfaction, I’d suggest don’t.

  • TomJB

This is why you maximize your deductions on your W4 so you minimize the amount withheld. It might be nice getting a big check each year but you could be earning interest on that money, or paying off high-interest credit cards through the year, saving yourself hundreds of dollars. One of these years, the government will decide they can’t afford to send any refunds and just tell us all to pound sand.

Want to rein in taxes? Eliminate automatic withholding and make everyone write a check each year. Then move tax day to the day before election day.

Oh, and to the tweets above stating they are “broke” because they won’t have any money until they get their refund: You’re doing your budgetting wrong.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1409861296 Elizabeth Fisher

  • RightThinking1

In defense of most (not all, some are just wanting Earned Income Credits), at least they PAID taxes.

    • PS

Thank you for at least saying something for the working poor…I guess most of the people here would be glad to see the soup lines return. If you want to pick on me …I belong to your party…but I am ashamed of the hatred that is going on against the poor and will not be apart of it…..Be thankful that you have what you need. I went through serious health issues….and a was a victim of a violent crime…I am bright and a worker…hardship can come to good people….I worked sick…but I can tell you this…I do not hate the disadvantaged because it could be anyone…Take a look at your 401 after you have been sick for awhile.

  • SideTraKd

Don’t worry! The libbies will find some way to blame this all on Bush!

  • Lamontyoubigdummy

Dear American idiots (including all the Tweeters in the above Twitchy thread),

The IRS/ government earns interest on your well earned money every day they have it before it’s finally “refunded” to you. The longer they hold it, the greater the interest.

(Present company excluded) You voted twice for Obama, The Chairman of The Council of The People’s Commissars. His Commissars, Pelosi, Reid, Schumer, et al in the Politburo in Washington.

    The media…Pravda.

You really think a slow tax return is gonna be the biggest of your problems?

  • LightSabre

From this day forward, adjust your withholding so that NOTHING is deducted from your paycheck for federal income tax. Then, next year, wait until the very last day to file and ask for an extension. Then, at the eleventh hour, send them what you owe them. Sweet revenge.

    • https://twitter.com/JackFore Jack Jolly

Bad idea, you’ll pay interest plua a big fat penalty for under withholding. Best practice is to owe some but always withhold at least 91% of what you will owe or more than you paid the previous year and then file and pay in April.

    • LightSabre

Who, but a big government-loving, Obama-voting jackass would put a dislike on my suggestion? God save us from these people.

      • mike_in_kosovo

Someone who actually understands that your suggestion would cost YOU more money and not the Feds.

  • devosf03

Why are all these people over paying the feds? Only pay the minimum and square up at the end of the year.

  • Maxx

The largest refund I’ve had in the past 15 odd years never exceeded $150. Why on God’s green earth would I give these nitwits my money when every two weeks, I could be using it to pay down high-interest bills or investing it, month to month? It’s why my credit card balances are zero.

That adjusted W4 can be your monthly friend. To hell with that early year carrot, dangling on a stick. One of these days, they’ll tell you “we can’t afford to return refunds this year….here’s an IOU.”

I’m in the same boat. I filed my taxes Jan. 30 Electronically. After 21 days I called the IRS hotline, IRS customer assistance and never got through. I’ve checked my refund status on IRS.gov everyday and it says “The information that you’ve entered isn’t correct.” This is highly frustrating. I’ve been behind on my bills since Christmas and really need my money to catch up. Screw this.

  • http://www.facebook.com/andrew.slayton2 Andrew Slayton

I dont understand my sister and a few other people that I know filed after me and have received their refunds but here I sit unemployed with no income and it has been a month. I have never received my state before federal but this year I am pretty sure I will. My state was mailed out yesterday and my federal is still processing and has been for 28 days. I am getting extremely annoyed.

  • http://twitter.com/Rydamusicrecord Rydamusicrecords

I don’t even check no more, whats the point? It says the same thing everyday.
(Your tax return is still being processed.
A refund date will be provided when available). I guess that statement saying you should receive your return in 21 days was for other people. Its not that I need the money, its the point that its mine and I want whats OWED(owed, ow·ing, owes
    1. To be indebted to the amount of: They owe me about Ten Thousand dollars. to me. NOW PAY ME MY MONEY!…..Guess what tomorrow it will say the same thing. (Your tax return is still being processed.

Can anyone answer a question for me. I checked the status of my refund yesterday and it gave me a DD date of 2/26/13. I went to print that off this morning, and now it is saying it is being processed. I thought maybe I entered the wrong information, so I re entered my information and now it’s saying they don’t have anything. Does this mean the system is down or does it mean something else?
