Tim Tebow responds to backlash by canceling appearance at First Baptist Church of Dallas

Tim Tebow was scheduled to speak at the First Baptist Church of Dallas in April. The mega church is home to controversial pastor Robert Jeffress, widely criticized for his views on Mormons, Jews and gays.

After drawing a flood of criticism about his speaking engagement, Tebow has canceled his appearance.

I don’t know enough about this pastor. Is he a Westboro type, or does he simply believe the Bible to be true?

    • http://twitter.com/RevKevinChilds Kevin Childs

      He just believes the Bible.

    • [email protected]

Pastor believes the bible, and is not fearful to state his position.

    • http://blog.khelek.us Brian Johnson

Reading his quotes, it doesn’t seem to be just “believing the Bible is true”. A preacher can speak on Biblical truth without doing it in a hateful manner. Recognizing that homosexuality is a sin in the Bible and recognizing we’re *all* sinners is a Biblical truth. Running around spewing “God hates [gays]” does nothing to share Christ’s redeeming love. Recognizing Christ as the only way to God is a Biblical truth; calling all other religions “religions from the pits of hell” do nothing to share Christ’s redeeming love.

I’m all for preaching the hard truths of the Bible, but I believe it has to be done in love in order to reach the lost. Doesn’t sound like this preacher does that.

      • Joe W.

Perhaps you should sit in his pew a time or two prior to condemning him??

    • http://twitter.com/pilartx pilartx

Nope. Just a true preacher of the Gospel that doesn’t sugar-coat or water the Bible down. He believes the same things I “thought” Tebow believed, that homosexuality is a sin, and that Islam is an evil religion. Very sad that he caved.

    • Lady 12

Looked him up online, and it seems he just believes the Bible is true. I am, however, skeptical of that statement because according to Wikipedia, he’s running a $130 million campaign to recreate a church building. Not something a church should be spending so much money on. Spreading the Gospel is ALWAYS more important than a building, and this campaign makes me wonder if he’s a hypocrite.

      • Joe W.

Wikipedia is a very suspect source of information.

        • Lady 12

I know. I put it up there so, if anyone could refute it, they would know to do so at once.

  • Mike Sanfilippo

Since Tebow deals with enough hatred, bigotry and irrational intolerance from the atheists and the people who support the party that booed God, it’s obviously a wise choice that he doesn’t associate with someone perceived to be an intolerant bigot. My question is, did he know about this pastor and his quotes before agreeing to make this appearance?

    • [email protected]

Surely he did. When you do any type of search on FBC Dallas, or the pastor, his stances on various subjects are revealed. Agree with you – Tim has enough condemnation just for being a Christian. He would be well served to leave this one alone for now.

    • http://extremesplash.wordpress.com/ Ben Bollman

Yes, Tebow does know about the hatred, bigotry and irrational intolerance towards Christians which is why he should know better when they project it onto another Christian. I understand why he is backing out yet I am still disappointed that he let the naysayers get to him.

    • Rella

The problem is that unless you endorse homosexuality than you are an intolerant bigot. Anyone who declares homosexuality as a sin is an intolerant bigot. Anyone who declares Jesus is the only way to heaven is an intolerant bigot. Look at the Giglio dust-up – not a “hateful” man, but someone who declared homosexuality a sin. Tebow has set himself up as not being able to speak in any evangelical church because according to the left they are all full of hate speech and intolerant bigots.

    • 1SkepticalChick

He says in his tweet “because of new information”. Think that means he wasn’t aware.

  • http://twitter.com/RevKevinChilds Kevin Childs

Well, we’ve now reached the point of politically correct tolerance where evangelicals cannot tolerate evangelicals.

  • Meredith

Pastor Robert Jeffress is a wonderful, well spoken, principled man of God who simply preached what the Bible teaches. If Tim cancelled because of what the pastor has said about the Bible’s teaching on homosexuality then it appears he has acquiesced to the PC crowd.

    • salvagesalvage

So then gays should be put to death?

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002109532283 Jillane Kent

Did Robert Jeffress personally say that? You would think such a quote would be easily found on the internet, yet I cannot find anything that resembles a call for execution. Care to educate your contemporaries?

      • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

I love how all you liberals assume that we wish death on all those that don’t follow what we believe are the teachings of Christ. Just shows how ignorant you truly are.

        • salvagesalvage

No but your god is going to throw everyone who doesn’t think like you into Hell right?

  • blueangel69

Way to resist censorship there Timbow.

  • kateorjane

Hopefully all the people who were so happy about how Tebow has been open about his religion will not now turn on him like rabid animals because he chooses not to identify with someone he may disagree with. Or will you attack him like the Left does?

    • Mellow Melon

I think it’s fine to be mad at Tebow. I don’t like people like him, these puffed-up celebrity elites who use “God” just to improve their image. Look, the Bible is explicit in declaring any kind of sexual activity outside of a heterosexual marriage as sin. If that is something that you do not like or that bothers you, guess what? You do not have to believe in it and you can remove the “Christian” label from yourself. Otherwise, you are a *hypocrite* and are in denial of the very Book that you supposedly endorse.

  • $41341954

As Michael Jordan once said, “Republicans buy shoes too”, I’m sure someone at Nike/NFL/Agent told Tebow, “Godless liberal atheists and homosexuals buy shoes too.”

    • $41341954

The actual line was “Republicans buy sneakers too”

  • Joe W.

Looks like the progressive vermin got to Mr. Tebow, as well… Too bad..I sorta liked and respected him, too.

  • http://twitter.com/conservag Aaron

    Liberal Logic:

By speaking in his church once, Tim Tebow automatically believes and practices everything that has ever come out of Robert Jeffress’ mouth.

By being a member his church for several years, Barack Obama’s values don’t align with Reverend Jeremiah Wright.

    • http://twitter.com/__abstraction__ An Abstraction

And the bible-thumping religious nuts come out of the woodwork….. bless your little butthurt hearts!!!

      • http://twitter.com/conservag Aaron

I’m not even remotely bible thumping. Just like pointing out your hilarious liberal hypocrisy.

And, not that it needs pointing out, but I love the fact that you can’t refute my statement. You can only throw inaccurate names at me.

        Bless your little ignorant heart.

Apparently this guy hates the Catholic Church as well: http://www.catholicleague.org/jeffress-says-satan-rules-catholicism/

How can the Church started by Jesus Himself be run by Satan?

    The guy’s not a pastor, he’s a hater.

    • therantinggeek

    • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

The Church isn’t confined to any one building. The Body of Christ = the Church, not some man-made denominational structure. But, in my opinion, pastors of these mega-churches are only seeing the money and the fame, wolves in sheep’s clothing. I think Tim Tebow shares that opinion. Rick Warren, the “pastor” of Saddleback Church also sits on the Council of Foreign Relations.

  • geronl

Tebow falls for the MSM crap

  • http://extremesplash.wordpress.com/ Ben Bollman

To liberals every Christian hates Mormons, Jews, and gays which is why you can’t listen to them….not even a little bit.

    • http://www.facebook.com/luke.givens.963 Luke Givens

Well there is sort of that wee little thing where Christians believe Mormons, Jews and gays will spend eternity burning in hellfire if they don’t repent, and all that horrible treatment of the three groups, especially Jews up to a few decades ago, but no of course you don’t hate them, everything is just peachy keen now and we should totally trust you. *Hugs*

      • Joe W.

That is not “hate”, my friend. It is God’s Word. And you are free to reject His Word and burn right along with the others. Bless your heart…

      • http://extremesplash.wordpress.com/ Ben Bollman

Hmm, I guess if we hated Mormons we wouldn’t have voted for one in the last election, if we hated Jews we wouldn’t be the only ones supporting Isreal, and if we hated gays you wouldn’t see us lobbying for GOProud’s inclusion in CPAC. Guess those facts kind of ruin your narrative, cubby.

        • Lady 12

        • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

If you hated Jews, you’d never go see a movie.

      • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

We know some people will be spending eternity in Hell… and I love how you assume we know who those people are, and can judge them as such. I love how all you liberals assume we wish death on those that don’t follow what we believe to be the teachings of Christ. There are ‘Christians’ that misinterpret what the Bible teaches, so of course you assume that ALL Christians are the same way. I should just assume you’re an ass-kissing Obama knob-slobberer then, am I right? I mean, all liberals do that. Don’t they? By your logic, you all MUST.

  • Guest

Tebow I have been a fan, now I am thinking you are allowing the media to think for you.

  • GaryTheBrave

Tim should realize he is speaking to the congregation representing his views on his perception of God and Jesus. Those may not necessarily align with the pastor’s.

No appearance by any person in any church does not mean an endorsement of the pastor’s views.

Tebow should speak at the church and state at the pulpit where he and the pastor disagree.

  • Chip

He should have gone anyway and spoke on “Judging They Neighbor.” Would have cut both ways with the congregation and his detractors.

  • salvagesalvage

Lousy qb but nice to see he doesn’t hang out with Bible thumping loonies, at least the gay hating kind.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002109532283 Jillane Kent

Like Obama (bible thumper) and Al Gore (chummy with anti gay pastor, Fred Phelps), right?

      • salvagesalvage

Ha! Ha! Yes! Obama is a “Bible thumper” and Al Gore hangs out with Fred Phelps allllll the time! They’re SBF!

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002109532283 Jillane Kent

As for Obama, I am taking his self avowed Christianity at face value. As for Phelps/Gore, I submit http://newsbusters.org/blogs/lachlan-markay/2010/12/15/reminder-god-hates-fags-church-packed-democrats

Please note that these chummy pictures where taken in the Phelps home.

          • salvagesalvage

So all Christians are Bible thumpers?

So Phelps voted for Democrats and that makes him and Gore buddies? That means Gore hates fags?

Wingnuts! always being stupider than stupid.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002109532283 Jillane Kent

I am simply mirroring your penchant for the slippery slope and faulty if/then statements. You’ve made blanket generalizations, yet you cry foul when someone merely presents the dichotomy of your convoluted logic. When your rhetorical skills improve and your insults mature, perhaps you will be a worthy troll. Sadly and embarrassingly, you aren’t there yet.

          • salvagesalvage

Really? I think you’re just avoiding the question. I’ll ask again, should gays be put to death? See that’s what your god commands in the Bible and the Bible is always right, right?

This is what I love about theists, they are such absolutists until asked for specifics then suddenly it all became flexible. You probably don’t want to kill gays but you sure don’t want them treated like human beings or at least anything more than second class citizens.

But alas, your god’s instruction is quite clear, kill all gays, what will you tell it when you die and it asks why you tolerated all those sodamites?

          • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

Uh… No… God doesn’t command that. Again, again and yet again, you flaunt your ignorance. There are TWO parts to the Bible…. I suggest you get out of the OT and focus on the NT, since the teachings of Jesus as the new covenant kinda trumps the OT…. Derp. You are sooooooooooooooooo ignorant about the BIble.

By the way, you should look up the Biblical meaning of *giggle* ‘sodamite’. I’m sure you’re one as well. Just sayin’.

          • salvagesalvage

Ah yes, the theists do love to pick and choose! When one bit of their infallible book isn’t right they just pretend that their god let it go, when another bit does suit then it’s THE HOLY WORD OF GAWD! PRAISE JEBUS!

Silly theist, it’s right there in Leviticus, your god commands death to gays. What your god was wrong when it said that? It changed it’s mind? Weird thing for a god that’s always right to do.

But the gays go to Hell right? Also strange, your god hates homosexuality but it keeps on making gay people so it can torture them later? I know, I know, as long as gay people never have sex, never have intimate love your god won’t punish them forever and ever. They just have to live painfully alone and desperate lives then after they die everything will be just fine.

            Is that it?

  • Peyton

No other athlete would be scrutinized to such an extent, even on his speaking engagements.

  • NRPax

And yet unlike Jermaiah Wright, the Mormon Church has admitted they were wrong and changed their attitudes towards non-whites. Darn those pesky facts. They always get in the way of a good rant.

  • Mellow Melon

Quit the racism crap. First of all, by your own logic Obama’s church would then qualify to be racist; and second, the accusation doesn’t even hold water – Romney’s parents ignored the LDS church itself when they told them to stop supporting civil rights. Furthermore, he grew up in the Midwest, where segregation and mobbing were not as ingrained into the white hive mind as they were in the South. So stop with the stupid ad hominem attacks that do nothing to improve discourse.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002109532283 Jillane Kent

Generally, historical documents are not often change to assuage contemporary sensibilities. The Bible and the Quran are primary examples.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002109532283 Jillane Kent

How do you feel about Al Gore’s past associations with Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church? What was his father’s view of non-whites? Robert Byrd’s?

  • http://twitter.com/redsoxunixgeek Smitty 

yeah they changed because they were threatened with the loss of their tax exemption, not because they were divinely inspired… quick, point out all the leaders of the LDS Church who are not old white guys.

  • NRPax

You directing that at me or TJay? Personally, I was unaware of Al Gore having anything to do with Westboro.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002109532283 Jillane Kent
  • NRPax

So there is no possibility of the LDS Church being forgiven because they used to be racist and Jermaiah Wright’s bigotry is perfectly acceptable. Noted.

  • http://twitter.com/redsoxunixgeek Smitty 

That is not what I said. All I did was point out the well known, and well documented reason for the change in LDS Church policy.

That racist attitude still exists today within the LDS Church as noted by the article i just posted, and the 21 years I spent as a mormon.

I don’t believe I mentioned Jeremiah Wright, or Obama..

  • NRPax

You didn’t. The original remark was directed towards someone else. I simply found it amusingly ironic that racist attitudes in religious institutions are perfectly acceptable as long as it’s the “right” kind of church.

As someone who started Catholic, left years ago and stayed nominally Christian, I’m not going to try pretending that I can understand your views on the Mormon church. I was basing my views on the ones who I served with or worked with.
