Barack and Michelle’s Valentine’s Day date causes massive traffic jam in DC

Whatever we think about Barack Obama, we won’t begrudge him for taking his wife on a nice date for Valentine’s Day. Heck, we’ll even say that he has great taste in restaurants for selecting José Andrés’ renowned “Minibar.” However, we can’t help but point out the fact that his date night probably ruined Valentine’s Day for a lot of other couples. You see, “Minibar” is smack in the middle of DC’s busy Penn Quarter neighborhood,  and date night for the Obamas requires shutting down a city block and bringing rush-hour traffic to a screeching halt.

  • V the K

And the punchline is… they stiffed Minibar on the Bill. (President Dine-and-Dash)

Again…have they ever heard of self-abnegation?..they really are unbelievably self-centered

  • Maxx

I don’t see how you could be President of the United States, book a date at a public restaurant on Valentine’s Day and NOT realize how negatively that is going to affect countless others who might have been planning and budgeting that for months.

Could this guy possibly be any more self absorbed? I suppose yes….if the media revealed he actually booked the table for one.

Because dinner at the White House isn’t good enough and another flight to Hawaii would just take too long. :(

    • CR

Not that it would take too long, the problem is he is going to Palm Beach this weekend to relax w/ friends so he probably wouldn’t have gotten back from Hawaii in Time. From the daily press briefing: “he’s getting some well-deserved downtime with some friends this weekend. I don’t think the American people will begrudge him that.”

Wow @disqus_0knwmmWEGk:disqus I hope the history books don’t look back at any travel schedule that Regan or the Bush’s had back in the day. Heaven for bid a you president ever taking some down time. Here’s hoping when the Republican’s when the White House in 2016 the new President will be able to live up to rights high expectations. Lock him or herself in the White House 24/7 for 365 days x 4 years and rule the nation. No double standards right. Coming down hard on BO, totally fair. Lets see when what happens when the shoe is on the “Right” foot. Just my two cents

        • CR

If the new president blathers on and on and on and on and on and on about “shared sacrifice” (aka taxing people who have dared to do something w/ their lives that raises their wages w/o government intervention to force those wages artificially upward) while simultaneously engaging in reckless unnecessary spending at every turn (including flying off to fancy vacation destinations) then I would also find that new presidential a hypocritical idiot and I would comment on it.

There’s also a big cost difference between Bush going to his ranch which is already set up for security and Obama going off jet-setting to Palm Beach (playground of the rich) while peaching about how he is the middle class savior.

          • Patsplacepp

@disqus_0knwmmWEGk:disqus I can’t actually argue with your first statement because it’s your opinion and that your fair right

However trying to compare the cost of the Obama’s night out with Bush 43’s trips to his ranch are pretty lame. Why not compare his many trip to Texas Rangers and/or Houston Astros games. How many Dallas Cowboys games to he see in his 8 years in office. I’m not trying to go tit for tat with you on this. All I was really saying is there seems to be a HUGE double standard for what this President does and how past Presidents were, and I state again, when the Republicans regain the White House in 2016 (and honestly lets face it, Mrs. Clinton isn’t going to run so the Dems have no clear chance) I just hope the standard that many on the right have placed against Obama will be the same if not harder for that new male or female President in 2016

          • CR

Well, let us hope we get a chance to find out what happens with a Republican in office in 2016.

To be clear, I think this President invites a “double standard” so to speak because of the class warfare he wages.

Also, minor point, I wasn’t comparing the cost of his night out to Bush’s trips, I was comparing the cost of a trip for POTUS to Hawaii while his wife heads off to vacation in Aspen about a month after a rather expensive vacation to Hawaii on top of a lot of other vacations that he took to places where there was significant extra cost (Spain; Africa, etc.)

          • Patsplacepp

@disqus_0knwmmWEGk:disqus Fair enough on the last point, but do you think future President’s will be held to account as to where they go for vacations? Should they even be allowed to go away if it will cost X amount?

Question though, how does the President’s supposed class warfare invite a “double standard”? He does something that right leaning peeps don’t like I get it. Everyone has their side that they stand for. I guess I was asking in regard to this Twichy post; would Bush 43 been raked over the coals by the right for that?

I figure this much and it’s only my opinion, if many of the people on this site and many others who hold Obama in such low esteem, put a future republican president to those same standards, would that guy or girl even make it to a second term. Not asking for to answer it but you do have wonder, what type of president is going to make everyone happy? I mean crap if Romney won would he have to kill his horses and get rid of vacation home in California?

          • CR

How does his class warfare invite a “double standard”?

If you go ON and ON and ON about shared sacrifice (which really translates to people giving up more of THEIR money that they earned for redistribution) then why don’t you make some sacrifices yourself. Obama is very concerned about what people do with their own money (and Romney was vilified for being rich) and he implicitly or explicitly endorses this whole 1 percent versus 99 percent thing.

Meanwhile he is very much living the 1 percent lifestyle. Which is hypocritical and invites objections about his lavish vacations which are stronger criticism than might be visited on a president that doesn’t vilify success (just like how Michael Moore deserves criticism for making huge money off his anti-capitalism films). When you establish a higher baseline standard for everyone else (we should ALL sacrifice) then you are going to be criticized more for not living up to that standard.

Worse, when the government is trying to cut the deficit and asking people to pay more in taxes to pay it down, Obama takes vacations that cost the taxpayers more than $20 million (his Hawaii vacation ad numerous others have also cost millions). I don’t care what he does with his own money, but if I have to sacrifice more of MY money to pay down the deficit, why doesn’t he have to sacrifice some of his vacations in order to not add to it for something that provides no gain to the country what-so-ever.

The difference between Romney’s vacation home in CA and his horses and what Obama is doing is that the taxpayers did not pay any money for those (and Romney was vilified for them anyway).

Yet, Obama who built a campaign about what Romney does with his OWN money seems to think he is entitled to take vacations that cost the taxpayers MILLIONS. This is hypocritical and invites criticism that wouldn’t necessarily be visited upon another president who doesn’t demonize success and place SO MUCH emphasis on “shared sacrifice” and being a champion of making cuts and taxing to support the middle class.

          • SineWaveII

You just hit on the main point. Obama is a multi-millionaire. So is Michelle. In addition we pay him $450,000.00 a year over and above all of the perks of his office. So what I want to know is why are we forced to pay for a millionaire’s vacations? He’s rich enough to pay for them himself out of his presidential pay without even touching his personal fortune, why must the taxpayers be soaked? When is he going to pay his fair share?

…now for the rest of the story. Only Barry is going to Palm Beach he’s going down to spend time with his “friends”. Michelle is going to Aspen and they are doing it at the same time. This means at least double the cost to the taxpayers.

Hey buddy, you say your wife is tired of the same old same old from the kitchen and wants something different on Valentine’s Day? Here’s an idea: Have the “Minibar” bring in their dinner to YOU! You’re the POTUS, you can make it happen. Heck, have them set it up in one of the other rooms, all fixed up. That would be so romantic, right?

But no. You would think after the first time these two shut down traffic for hours, years ago, they would understand what they were doing to so many others. But they just don’t care.

  • eick74

I am curious to know if Minibar was allowed to have other customers while the Obamas were there or if we the taxpayers paid for an entire restaurant for their valentine’s day dinner?

It’s must have been such a huge traffic jam, epic even. Doesn’t seem like anyone really reported on. Not even Fox News. Though I enjoy the tweet from Mr. Dayspring from National Republican Senatorial Committee.
