Majority Leader of the Md. House of Delegates defends chess-playing State Senator

Earlier today, we told you that anti-gun Maryland State Senator Jamie Raskin played online chess during the gun grabbing hearings in Maryland yesterday.

Now another legislator, House of Delegates Majority Leader Kumar Barve, is defending Raskin. Here is what he wrote in an email to Twitter user @CittiFo:

“Well I know Jamie, and he is a guy who routinely plays ten chess games simultaneously. He is more than capable of multitasking, so I’m sure he was in fact paying attention and playing chess.”

Good luckMd. You voted these dumb@$$e$ in you can keep them. I don’t know who is worse the idiots in office or the morons that voted them in.

    • NachoCheese (D)

The morons that will vote for them again in the next election FTW.

    • liberalssuck

I am going to say in order, the morons who voted them in and then the morons themselves. Sorry to the true morons I may have offended with this post :)

  • RadicalRebelWhoMeToo

    no words……

  • Noah Lee

he is a multitasker. he can condescend and lie simultaneously.

    • milootoole

      good one!!!

  • V the K

Now you know why I am leaving Maryland.

    • John Giovanni Bellomo

Need to find a way out of Illinois as well…… Maybe we meet in Florida.

  • rogueco

I guess now we know who he was playing against

  • Dalsx1

That’s my State. Proud to be a Marylander. Pffffttttttt

  • lainer51

Yes and I am Queen of Sheba…. liars

  • ceemack

If he was that smart, he wouldn’t be pushing gun control.

  • jetch

doesn’t matter how good a multi-tasker he is, he’s playing a game when he should be working!! let a regular person try that at work and see how it goes. as a gun-control nut, i’m sure he’s expecting the police to come and rescue him when he needs it, i’d love for the cop to be playing angry birds on his iphone while he’s responding. no problem with that, right??

    • Judy B

      What difference does it make?

  • Adela Wagner

Silly Pawns, Pollyticks are for Smartypants.

  • BigTBoom

Not sure about anyone else, but I’ve been chewed out for playing solitaire at my work before…and we weren’t even busy!

  • Daniel Corcoran

I called and asked if the delegate was aware of this email and am waiting for a call back.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m sure the senator was playing chess, but the reply seems odd. So unapologetic.

    • Daniel Corcoran

You know… I retract my previous statement and replace it with the following:

      What a craptastic reply.

  • Mister A

If you’re playing 10 games of chess at the same time against yourself, is it really multitasking?

    • milootoole

betcha he offers himself money to throw games. Can’t resist, he is a politician….

  • Tony

Victor Ramirez is a MD State Senator and as someone who grew up with him. We would go out and their would 4 or 5 of us the rest of us would by a round each for everyone and when it was Victor Ramirez turn he would disappear and you would find him later with his own drink buying no one else a drink. A real cheap skate. This guy is a real piece of work. As a lawyer who makes a ton he really doesn’t like to spend his own money but everyone else’s Typical Liberal.

  • Thevelvetkitten

The people of your state don’t pay you to play chess !!

  • Bill Smells

Maryland needs a revolution. Clearly their lawmakers have failed them in gross and inept ways. They are a complete embarrassment.

Way to go, MD voters. Reap what you sow.

    • milootoole

Delaware needs an enema. They have a Bidenhead or two in office.

  • $27789750

MD a rabbit warren of government employees and retirees. Not much hope of changing anything there.

  • Chocolate Rain

Not all MD citizens voted for these liberal Politicians. They were voted in by welfare “minorities” and illegal aliens in Baltimore City, Prince George’s County, and Montgomery County, where the masses of “government dependent voters” are “encouraged” to vote Democratic. It will be even worse now that Owe’Malley has gotten away with gerrymandering the districts to shut out most of the rest of the conservative politicians.

I began playing chess at age four. Started beating my dad a year later and was a geek extraordinaire, walking with pocket chess books in my back pocket during my elementary and teen years. I’m all for a great game of chess but there is a time and place and during a hearing regarding the rights of Americans with regards to infringements on the Second Amendment, that sure as hell ain’t the time.

  • Rulz

Sounds like an undergraduate in one of my policy classes a couple of years ago….

“Like…..I have my laptop open during class because it helps me concentrate better”.

Some other dude used to surf HuffPO in the middle of lecture too.

I don’t normally do this, but I will make an exception here. I am a staffer (nonpartisan as required) with the Maryland General Assembly. Senator Raskin’s politics aren’t my politics, in fact we are polar opposites. However, this story is total BS. He was not playing chess during this very long hearing. He opened an email sent by a colleague who sent info about a chess tournament held between members of the GA and some constitutuents the day before. I don’t work for the Senator personally, I work for the body as a whole. He is a very smart and dedicated legislator who cares about issues, even if I don’t agree with him. My opinion of Twitchy has just sunk a few notches with this ridiculous story.

That is what I told my jr. high teacher. she didn’t buy it either.
