Disgusting: Andrew Sullivan ghoulishly gay-baits late Ed Koch, blames for NYC AIDS crisis

As Twitchy reported, former New York City Mayor Ed Koch passed away this morning at 88. The colorful, widely beloved Koch was rumored to be gay but never confirmed or denied it.

Exactly. Unfortunately, vile hack Andrew Sullivan has no qualms when it comes to debasing himself. He’s seen fit not only to engage in good, old-fashioned gay-baiting, but also to suggest that Koch was responsible for New York City AIDS crisis:

Of course, no one – straight or gay – is entirely defined by their sexual orientation. But it’s a core part of your personality – and Koch was simply too old, too self-loathing, and too prickly to change. Here’s the money quote when he was asked about it:

What do I care? I’m 73 years old. I find it fascinating that people are interested in my sex life at age 73. It’s rather complimentary! But as I say in my book, my answer to questions on this subject is simply “Fuck off.” There have to be some private matters left.

Of course they do. And I sure don’t want to know about Ed Koch’s sex life, if he had one. But the plain fact of your orientation is not the same as the details of your sex life. And when you are such a public figure and single and your city is grappling with an epic health crisis among gay men, it does become other people’s fucking business – especially if he was inhibited from a more aggressive response because of not wanting to seem gay.

That’s just the sort of sick slop that gleeful lefties like these delightfully lap up:

But those out there who understand respect, those with morals, are giving Sully the throttling he so very richly deserves:

Loathsome cockroach.

There was nothing to “do” about AIDS, there was no cure, no way to stop it and for years we didnt know how you got it exactly
      Gays brought AIDS onto themselves

      • TheAmishDude

And apparently everybody else is “responsible” for AIDS, too. They tried this crap with Reagan and now Koch gets it.

        • PeteAJ

Reagan was a bastard. Ignoring a pubic health crisis does not make you a good leader.

          • NRPax

AIDS funding skyrocketed in the 1980s, almost doubling each year from 1983 – when the media started blaring headlines – from $44 million to $103 million, $205 million, $508 million, $922 million, and then $1.6 billion in 1988.

Reagan’s secretary of Health and Human Services in 1983, Margaret Heckler, declared AIDS her department’s “number one priority.” While the House of Representatives was Democrat-dominated throughout the 1980s, which Democrats would quickly explain was the source of that skyrocketing AIDS funding, Reagan clearly signed the spending bills that funded the war on AIDS.

            Source:http://www.mrc.org/bozells-column/new-myths-reagans-record

So what more was Reagan supposed to do? Resign as President and become the lead medical researcher?

          • PeteAJ

I’m glad you shared the funding numbers with me. I still think not saying the word AIDS publicly until once in 1985 (and then more frequently from 87 towards the end of his second term) didn’t exactly read as proactive. But we could agree to disagree.

“Between June 1981 and May 1982 the CDC spent less than $1 million on AIDS and $9 million on Legionnaire’s Disease. At that point more than 1,000 of the 2,000 reported AIDS cases resulted in death; there were fewer than 50 deaths from Legionnaire’s Disease

Mostly because it was first called GRIDS before 1985 (Gay Realated….IDS). Political Correctness wouldn’t stand for the gay part (even though it was true) and changed it to AIDS.

Like “Global Warming” got changed to “Climate Change”.

            (EDIT)
It’s actually the opposite of “Global Warming” but similar in the motives. GW got changed to CC because they couldn’t prove it and it looks bad. GRIDS was mostly a gay disease that could be proven, but makes them look bad.

Either way, The Liberal Playbook (aka. “Progressive”). Same misinformation packaged under a new name.

          • PeteAJ

On Wikipedia is says the CDC changed the name to AIDS in August of 1982 because as many as 1/2 the cases weren’t gay men. That’s what Wikipedia page on GRIDS says. I don’t see that as a political correctness change.

          • TJCrane_NCC1701

@Peter: I’ll give you and WIKI the date the benefit of the doubt about the name change.

Back in ’82 it was gays and hypes who shot with gays. Then they started donating blood (usually for money) and tainted our blood supply. Then kids and grandmothers who needed transfusions became infected.

Your 50% was because of the PC BS that wouldn’t call it like it was ! People died because we couldn’t OFFEND.

I was THERE and watched it unfold.

          • Guest

So because you were given facts that harm your original argument, you are now retreating in saying there wasn’t enough political correctness in the issue?

            What a laugh.

          • PeteAJ

That’s not really political correctness to expect a president to acknowledge a public health crisis.

          • $129448

All my gay friends that spent all their time in the bath houses in the 80’s are dead is that Reagan’s fault too. Liberals are so blameless

          • PeteAJ

Not as much as psychos who are trying to reignite AIDS panic in 2013. If you had gay friends you would know that AIDS isn’t and wasn’t just a gay disease. Duh.

            You’re nuts. And a liar.

          • $129448

That is actually funny. Check the facts it is on the rise. Wow you really have issues with the truth.

Yup you keep telling yourself that and believe what you want. He hardly ignored it. Read the wikipedia on it. At the time, not as much was known about it and it was restricted mostly to gay men.

Today, we know that gay men have substantially more sex partners per person than straight men.

Aside from being less political with his S-General, what would you have him do? Ban gay sex?

Forcing Obamacare on people doesn’t make you a good leader either.

      • PeteAJ

Not true. Education? Research? If you knew someone who was touched by a new disease you might feel differently (no matter how they acquired it).

        • http://www.vatican.va/ Rulz

I would say that how they acquired would be a big part of the medical diagnosis.

As far as education and research go, if you’re REALLY interested in results and not trying to land government workers cozy union jobs so they can work on utterly worthless projects, then your best bet is the private sector.

Otherwise, no matter how it affects you personally, you’d be wasting your time.

We see all the time how celebs chair foundations about diseases that affect people they know, but to my knowledge they don’t seem THAT eager to open their own pocketbooks.

          I’ll pray for your friend.

It’s worth noting that aids spread mostly through sex and needles.

I just don’t think Reagen was sure it was so restricted to body fluids.

  • michael s

No fan of Koch, but he wasn’t the reason aids flourished in NYC. When is Sullivan act up going to blame patient zero. The male steward responsible for aids flourishing.

    • http://pennyrobinsonfanclub.net/ PennyRobinsonFanClub

I think most of the “Left” isn’t upset at the thought he might have been gay, but rather at the thought he was quite conservative — for a New Yorker.

  • George Washington Mclintock

My understanding of the time period is nobody really knew how serious AIDS was back then, so what did they think he could do? Weird govt-must-save-me thinking, especially since the biggest deterrent to AIDS is condoms, which what, did Andrew Sullivan think Mayor Ed had to go to door-to-door handing ’em out. That’s silly, Gay community take responsibility for their own personal lives back then? Perish the thought, says Andrew Sullivan

    • mikeb330

I’m still unsure what Silly’s “perfect” response would have been. Keep the bathhouses open? Hindsight is 20-20, especially when your hind is as big as Silly’s.

      • TocksNedlog

Never refer to Andrew Sullivan and “hindsight” in the same post EVER again!

    • TheAmishDude

Back then the activists didn’t want anything to be done except “find a cure”. Quarantine was brought up but we couldn’t do that.

We were also told there would be a heterosexual AIDS explosion. I remember a TIME cover on it. There’s plenty of it in Africa but not in America/Europe.

      • jacksonjay

Oh yes, I remember it well! “We are all at risk! Anyone can get it!” Well no, it quickly became obvious that if you weren’t sleeping with gay men and sharing needles, you WERE NOT AT RISK!

  • Love of Country

And I always thought the liberal gay community had the highest % of AIDS proliferators but I guess those kinds of statistics don’t mean much to progs like Andrew Sullivan who have no appreciable interest in solutions or truth telling …. for them …. it’s either counter-productive or just too hard.

  • ZoriahShepard

Well, these vultures live up to their nature. The man just died and they waste no time picking at him and shredding him to pieces.

  • Guest

You are what you eat, Sullivan is a d1ck

  • http://twitter.com/1RandiStarr Randi Starr

Ah, Andrew wrestling with his self hatred again, I see.

  • mikeb330

Silly never would have written something like this if Mr. Koch were in his prime and able to respond. And I’m certain the retort would have been priceless. RIP Ed Koch.

  • http://twitter.com/Gator_Country Stephen K

Well, it didn’t take long for the left to drop its charade.

  • golfmax13

He had to start this the day the guy died? What – was he chomping at the bit while Koch was in the ICU – he could hardly wait? Too bad he didn’t have the guts to spew his bile when Koch was 82, Sully would have gotten his A$$ beat.

  • kate_middleton

Wait, I thought Andrew Sullivan was writing at a pay-only site now. Guess he needed to get some attention to try to get subscribers.

  • grais

Who cares if Koch was gay? He signed gay rights legislation and he approved of the closing of the bath houses. His coming out wouldn’t have changed a damned thing.
    It’s a ridiculous notion.

  • ceemack

Yeah, ’cause there was absolutely nothing the gay men of New York could have done to slow the AIDS epidemic, or even to protect themselves from it.

I mean, what were they supposed to do…use condoms or something? Be a little picky about who they slept with?

    Yeah, it’s all Koch’s fault.

    • $36544368

      Nah…Chris…you keep forgetting…it’s Bush’s fault 😉

      • jacksonjay

How about we blame Sarah Palin because she is SO stupid!

  • PeteAJ

Andrew Sullivan asked a valid question. That’s it. It seems like people who think gay bating is disgusting frequently also have a problem with gay people. It’s 2013. This article’s authors are way too prissy about the introduction of this topic for my taste.

    • TocksNedlog

      Sure thing.
Sullivan was merely advocating for the public’s right to know where Ed Koch stuck his wiener.

    • http://twitter.com/Gator_Country Stephen K

Ed Koch made it a point while he was alive to tell people it was none of their business who or what he slept with.

Why are privacy rights so hard for leftists like you and Sullivan to understand?

      • PeteAJ

I never said I was a leftist. A part of me agrees with you, it doesn’t matter, it shouldn’t matter and people can define themselves how ever they like (obviously). I also think there’s a whole history here of people trying to deny, hide or otherwise suppress people being gay that complicates this.

        • http://pennyrobinsonfanclub.net/ PennyRobinsonFanClub

          Amazing. COMPLETELY incoherent non sequiter.

          • PeteAJ

Not at all. What part didn’t you get? Read it again. A part of me agrees about privacy and then (gasp, at the same time) the history here complicates it for me.

      • http://www.vatican.va/ Rulz

While there is no Constitutional right to privacy, the left doesn’t care about rights that don’t advance their agenda.

  • http://twitter.com/DJAdamWalsh DJ Adam Walsh

AIDS is the only illness that is 100 percent preventable. Use condoms and do not shoot drugs. There should be no new AIDS cases. Don’t blame Ed Koch. In the closet or not… He didn’t die of AIDS.

    • PeteAJ

No. I know a hemophiliac who died of AIDS in 1986 from a blood transfusion so that was going on too.

      • http://twitter.com/1RandiStarr Randi Starr

I worked with known AIDS patients in the early 80’s, we knew then what caused it but part of the problem was society and the fact old habits die hard.

        • http://twitter.com/The_Livewire Matthew Morris

irony, they died hard,, and painfully and slowly from those old habits

      • Skeinster

And where, may we ask, did that HIV-tainted blood come from?
It didn’t magically appear out of thin air.

  • Garth Haycock

So, it was Ed Koch, not promiscuity that was responsible for the AIDS crises?

    • NRPax

Honest misunderstanding because they misspell his last name and draw conclusions.

  • TocksNedlog

This would hardly be the first time that Sully came out too soon.

I agree Bostongirl. I also saw so many people die of AIDS in the 80s and one of the main reasons why was the promiscuity. Its the TRUTH! My best friend Keven was gay and i saw first hand how many men he slept with and how common that was. He eventually contracted HIV and died soon after. People cant blame public officials for the consequences of the behavior of the gay community. In Africa AIDS is rampant in the heterosexual community for the same reason…. promiscuity.

“Of course, no one – straight or gay – is entirely defined by their sexual orientation”

The problem with this statement is it’s a bald-faced lie. Homosexuals ARE entirely defined by their sexual behavior. That’s why they are so insistent on wanting to be identified by it.

I recall the days after 9/11, and United Flight 93. When it became public that Mark Bingham was a homosexual, Bingham the man vanished and all that remained was his sexual identity. I should know, because I had been in debates with people who insisted on his being a homosexual being relevant above all else.

I didn’t realize New York City mayors were actually the great and powerful Oz.
