Matt Drudge hits Gov. Cuomo for mental health checks in gun law: ‘The patients are truly running the asylum!’

Matt Drudge is fired up over the mental health measures pushed by Gov. Cuomo and New York lawmakers. “The patients are truly running the asylum!” he tweeted.

This morning on The Drudge Report, the headline “mENTAL hEALTH cHECKS” links to an NBC article on New York’s sweeping new gun control law.

One of the most controversial elements of the bill is the requirement on providers of mental health services.

“People who are mentally ill should not have access to guns, that’s common sense,” Cuomo said, according to Reuters. “That’s probably the hallmark of this bill, coming up with a system that allows for mental-health screens.”

New York’s new law was passed in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre. “You can overpower the extremists with intelligence and with reason,” said Cuomo.

But since the shooter didn’t buy or own any guns, how exactly would “mental-health screens” have helped? Where’s the “intelligence and reason” in that? Perhaps the oddly incurious media should ask the patients running the asylum.

More from Drudge:

If we’re going to ban stuff, can it please be reminders of Rahm Emanuel’s “naked rage”?

Oh, my. We’ll meet you at the cemetery at midnight, Matt. We’ll bring the black lipstick, you bring the clove cigarettes.

“You can overpower the extremists with intelligence and with reason”

Apparently not, which you proved by signing that bill into law.

any law passed in response to a tragedy, or senseless murder is usually useless, and stupid!

He may be dramatic but he’s also right. We hit a new low every day.

Should NYers, under equal protection, similarly require mental health checks for everyone attempting to exercise a Constitutionally affirmed right? How about those mental health checks for members of the press/media? How about mental health checks prior to registering to vote and a re-cert. of mental stability every 5 years?

    • lainer51

how about mental health checks to run for Congress?
That would empty the halls in a day.

  • kayakingfatso

Soon we’ll need mental health checks to buy anything. My question is: Who’s checking to see if any of these morons in Washington can pass a mental health exam?

    • $36544368

Yeah…who is checking the ‘checkers’? And who decides what criteria to use to determine if one is mentally stable?

  • AlertUpUSA

My question is: Who, then, will be empowered to CREATE the mental health assessment that determines whether someone is competent to have and carry a gun?

What will be the criteria used to determine qualification, and WHO will choose that criteria?

    Lots of issues here….

HHS and queen Sebelius will write the rules the imperial leader wants.

Whose side are you on? Pick one. Keep making comments like that, and you’ll end up looking for a new audience.

    • Doctor Bulldog

Agreed. The Goth allusion was totally outta’ place—and, quite dated. I wish the Twitchy staff had just buried that cemetery remark!

      My thoughts precisely…

This law will cause people who really want to get a mental health exam to reconsider. They don’t want to be pegged as being mentally ill just because they saw a mental health pro.

For those that remember Sargent Shriver when he ran for Veep and he was lambasted as being mentally ill (read: incompetent and unqualified) just because he was seeing a counselor. That scenario will play out for every law-abiding American who needs grief counseling, marriage counseling, or just wants to make certain they are okay.

Como wants free room and board for eight years in spin city east. He out to make a name for himself. Good luck with that.

  • JesLHW

Does this mean that someone who’s needed counseling because he or she has been abused will not be able to purchase a gun?

    • Grumpa Grumpus

      In a word: yes.

And yet, Liberals can’t for the life of them understand why citizens who choose to accept the responsibility in attempting to protect themselves, their families, and their personal property are upset about the idea that a government heavily in support of limiting individual freedoms and liberties is attempting to implement policies that associate gun ownership with a person’s mental status.
