It’s OK if you date a Republican, says Lena Dunham, even though it’s like dating a Nazi; Correction: Dunham’s character thinks dating a Republican would be like dating a Nazi

Even though she has a popular HBO show called “Girls,” a lot of people weren’t aware of Lena Dunham until she appeared in the creepy ad comparing voting for Barack Obama to losing one’s virginity. Since then, she’s been named one of Glamour’s “Women of the Year” and one of 2012’s “Brave Thinkers” by The Atlantic. But that was last year. What brave thoughts will Dunham share in 2013?

First, that you shouldn’t date a Republican, because that would be like dating a Nazi. In the second season of “Girls,” Dunham’s character “Hannah” will date a Republican, which she just shouldn’t. Ali Akbar tracked down that brave thought from an interview Dunham did with Vulture.com.

Dunham explained that her character, Hannah, will explore her “reverse ignorance” this season by dating a black Republican played by Donald Glover. “We liked the idea of a Republican entering their universe. And Hannah doesn’t really have a clear sense of why you shouldn’t date a Republican; it’s kind of just like the same reason why you shouldn’t date a Nazi: You just shouldn’t.”

Dunham, though, wants you to know that even though dating a Nazi would be a bad thing, she’s totally pro-choice — when it comes to dating. “My personal position is that you should date anyone you want so long as they treat you respectfully and share your value system. So it might be hard for me to date someone who was against gay marriage and abortion rights — I don’t think I would be attracted to them — but I don’t have any personal problem with dating a Republican.”

That’s a relief. In fact, Dunham told the Hollywood Reporter that this one time, she herself dated one. “Actually, you know what, I dated someone who claimed to be a fiscal Republican.” she confessed. “I don’t know what that means really.” Did we mention Dunham was named one of 2012’s “Brave Thinkers”?

Correction: The title and opening section of this post initially suggested that Lena Dunham believes dating a Republican is like dating a Nazi. The post has been amended to clarify that her character, Hannah Horvath, is the one who believes that. We apologize for the error. Here is the relevant portion of Dunham’s interview in which she describes her character’s thoughts on dating Republicans.

Why make him a Republican?
We liked the idea of a Republican entering their universe. And Hannah doesn’t really have a clear sense of why you shouldn’t date a Republican; it’s kind of just like the same reason why you shouldn’t date a Nazi: You just shouldn’t.

Wait, so your position is that you shouldn’t date a Republican?
My personal position is that you should date anyone you want so long as they treat you respectfully and share your value system. So it might be hard for me to date someone who was against gay marriage and abortion rights — I don’t think I would be attracted to them — but I don’t have any personal problem with dating a Republican. I do think that Hannah has this reverse ignorance where she’s like,If they’re Republican, get them out of my airspace, and that was a fun thought to explore.

I had never heard of her or her HBO program until she made a dolt out of herself with the sleazy Obama ad.

    • Robert Hoover

I’ve seen her. My question is, who in their right mind would date her?

  • Mernaise

I’m surprised a Republican dated her; self-hatred is so much more a liberal thing.

    • http://twitter.com/1RandiStarr Randi Starr

I thinking, she’s one of those, “I’ll call ya dates”…….then they run like the wind

      • http://113tidbits.com/ tony greene

definitely an “I’ll call ya later” type

    • thetreyman

she is lying. who really says they are fiscally republican? no one, thats who. fiscally republican has no meaning. its like saying im fiscally reform or fiscally constitution or independent. what the hell does that mean? you either want to minimize spending (conservative) or maximize it (liberal).

  • http://113tidbits.com/ tony greene

Who still watches anything on HBO?

    • Zane Henry

not much over here since that Sopranos finale. Yeesh.

      • http://113tidbits.com/ tony greene

and that ended on a shitty note

    • irishgirl91

Only watch Game of Thrones. If I weren’t so addicted to it I would x-cell subscription.

It is far cheaper, and puts less money in their pockets, if you simply purchase the seasons as they become available.

  • Brad Donald

Funny thing considering the NAZIs are a left wing group and ideology.

    • Zane Henry

Stupid hipster libtards have a difficult time with the whole “National Socialist Worker’s Party” thing. I’ve seen tv shows that included in their dialogue such gems as “They’re a hardcore right wing group, kinda like the Nazis.” I just facepalm and quit watching that show.

I’ve watched “Girls” before. Typical emo NYC neurosis on parade. Oh and with lots of vagina jokes.

    • michael s

william pierce george lincoln rockwell frank conlin and every other nazi i can think of aren’t left wingers, their right wingers. next you’ll be saying pinochet was a leftist the apartheid govt in south africa was leftist, shah of iran. the conservative citizens council are all leftist as well. own up to your associations.

You couldn’t think of any “Nazi” Nazis? I notice you ignored the Communist mass murderers. Also the Democrat Terror Brigade, the KKK.

        • michael s

i couldve listed them all the ss himmler mengele etc. now i understand your revionism on nazis being left wing, its dishonest but understandable. as for communist mass murderers who’s trying to change their ideology.no denial they’re left wingers.yes the kkk was the dems terror brigade no argument here.

          • Zane Henry

            edit: **POOF** sorry, wrong comment…

  • ERMERGERD

What an intelligent woman. By the way, I’m sure all the men on here are relieved she wouldn’t rule out dating them. //sarc

    • thetreyman

at least i dont have to join a monastery now and take that vow of chastity. crises averted.

    • ceemack

I don’t think she needs to worry too much about conservative men asking her out.

Not even twenty-foot poles would be enough.

  • $23629333

As I just stated on the thread about somebody Sulkin wishing Dick Cheney dead, I have to wonder what these portsiders – who call Republicans and conservatives “Nazi” – would do if they encountered the real McCoy, or someone equivalent. With the anger in the land and the quickly changing demographics, that day may arrive soon.

  • FreedomFighter

Didn’t Nazis march in solidarity with OWS???

  • kerrari1898

Dating a black conservative is like dating a socialist white supremacist?

    Yep, that makes sense.

    • mickeyco

Makes you wonder what Tim Scott, Adam West, etc. think about that, doesn’t it?

  • Dan Thorpe

The very very fact that she doesn’t know what a fiscal republican is proves her intelligence, or lack of.

    • irishgirl91

In her world you can be completely ignorant of conservative notions because they aren’t human. They exist to hate, not understand.

    • thetreyman

i dont know what a fiscal republican is. fact is they are quit capable of massive spending just like the democrats. i know what a fiscal conservative is and it doesnt describe all republicans.

      • Dan Thorpe

to me a fiscal republican is akin to a fiscal conservative, like me. Yes fiscal republicans don’t always vote towards fiscal conservative values but at least some try.

    • peteee363

fiscal republican, is that like john mccain, or chris christie?

      • Dan Thorpe

more like former Senator Jim DeMint

    • ceemack

She got an award for being a “brave” thinker, not for being a “deep” thinker.

      • mickeyco

What’s a brave thinker? is it someone who imagines he’s Superman & he’s really Clark Kent?

  • ZoriahShepard

But wait guys…it’s her *character* that thinks Republicans are like Nazis…so that’s different right? Right? Guys…..? *crickets*

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002109532283 Jillane Kent

Sadly, I believe playing herself is the biggest weapon in her acting arsenal.

      • CR

I think her “arsenal” of acting talent is about as empty as the shelves of a gun store after Obama makes a speech.

    • R0nin

Well, the fact that she created and “stars” in the series (according to Wikipedia) tends to make me think that she has a hand in crafting its message.

IB4 someone claims that TV shows don’t preach a message.

  • stuckinIL4now

When I saw the headline I wondered who the heck is Lena Dunham … then the story reminded me. Wow, see what a memorable thing she is? “Thing” being the operative. And this whole dating a Republican schtick really accentuates her ignorance.

  • HARP2

They need to ask her about Soros who actually worked FOR the Nazis.

  • louisiana_mom

Any female who votes with their “lady parts” really isn’t that bright to begin with…

  • Dave Silva

it always amazes me how dumb liberals are. If you read the fads the nazi’s put into place, from vegetarianism to excessive obsession with exercise to large governments, etc, you’d see moder liberals believe almost everything the nazi’s believed. to the point the American left loved Hitler and Mussolini just like they now love Castro and Mao.

    • Zane Henry

I feel like punching every one of those D-bags you see wearing a Che Guevara t-shirt.

      • peteee363

next time you see one, ask the person why they wear a mass murderer on thier shirt, and tell them you can get them a deal on john wayne gacy shirts!

Twitchy gives me a near daily pep talk about why I should abstain from ever getting the cable turned back on. Just when you think television cannot sink any lower, rubes such as these go out of their way to prove you wrong.

    • peteee363

i cut my cable almost a year ago, and don’t miss it a bit. i also like the money i am saving, over 80 bucks a month! streaming is the way to go!

      • http://113tidbits.com/ tony greene

If there was a way to get cheaper internet..the cable would be completely gone from my house

  • CR

On her show, Lena Dunham is a spoiled post grad living in Manhattan who is continually borrowing money from her parents and is unable to get or keep a job for more than an episode. One episode of her show involves a really fun trip to an abortion clinic where one of her friend’s is going to have an abortion. When she miscarries the baby having sex with a random stranger in a public bathroom and doesn’t show up for the abortion, her friends who were in the clinic lament the fact that she spoiled the beautiful abortion that they had planned for her. THIS is what Dunham is famous for.

Between that masterpiece work and her looks, I’m sure republicans (or anyone with more than 1 brain cell shared w/ 200 other liberals) is probably NOT exactly beating down her door.

    • orringtonmom (D)

apparently she is nominated for something and the clip i saw showed her boyfriend admitting that he slept with lots of guys while they dated. and it kinda explained a lot.

      • CR

She is nominated for something? Adding this to my list of reasons why the majority of Americans aren’t smart enough to vote for ANYTHING.

        • orringtonmom (D)

she just won a golden globe… and had an orgasm when clinton was on stage to promote ‘lincoln’. it was gross.

  • irishgirl91

That show has not one character in it that is likeable. Dunham herself defended that by saying that she doesn’t even like her friends, but she loves them. (?) I watched the first four epi. to see what the talk was about, I am not joking, not one likeable character. At least Seinfeld’s unlikeable people were funny.

  • $29561723

    She’s a pig.

  • orringtonmom (D)

“thanks, but no thanks.” said republicans and nazis around the world.

  • OldmanRick

After seeing her picture and buck teeth, a date with her would be similar to dating a rabid rabbit.*
    *Was that too PC.

  • Howzah123

Nazis were radical left wing Collectivists

  • grais

I’m getting quite tired of these silly child “entertainers”

  • peteee363

i can see comparing obama to sex, my backside hurts everytime he raises taxes. i just hope he doesn’t kiss and tell?

  • diskinetic

Let me be the umpteenth brave Republican to not date her.

  • detroit19

    Who? Cares??

  • Johnny Blade

No self respecting republican would have anything to do with Lena Dunham unless they were placing a lunch order.

  • Gary

She never knew or dated a Nazi so it’s a pretty stupid thing to say. I wonder if dating her would be like dating a mental asylum patient???

  • Kleverabevera

10 shots of tequila and a hazmat suit, and only if Michael savage will chaperone.

    She sucks.

  • http://www.facebook.com/omberg1 Rhonda Omberg

Amazing. Republicans are 40-50 percent of the electorate, but yet the other 40-50 percent see them as some kind of alien life form. Of course, if you go nowhere but NYC and California, I can see where you might think that way.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002109532283 Jillane Kent

Nothing says ‘liberated’ woman these days like viewing yourself as a walking sex organ with no brain-Dunham.

I just saw a picture of her. Is she a lineman for the Vikings?
