Cory Booker: ‘If I had the power to [ban guns], I would.’

Whoa. Let’s keep that statement on file. It won’t hurt Mayor Booker much in a New Jersey Senate race, but it could come back to haunt him if he ever runs for office nationally.

Update: Here’s the video. Scroll to 24:28.

C-SPAN interviewer: Would you ban guns?

Booker: I am very much one that is against handguns. And I know in my urban environment, I see little to no need for guns at all. And I think that the availability of guns and the ease with which even young people can get their hands on them is just horrendous.  And I would, if I had the power to do so, I would. In fact, we’re even looking towards doing some local level  handgun legislation. I’m going to take every step I can to get guns out of the hands of those who commit crimes or those who might commit crimes.

The date of the interview was July 5, 2000. Booker was a city councilman at the time.

‘If I had the power to ban Cory Booker, I would.’

    And if I had a hammer . . .♪

    • Catchance

Great… now I’m going to be humming that song all night.

What is a Cory Booker, and should we spray for it like we do roaches?

    Here is the video:

The comment comes in at about 24 and a half minutes in.

    • GaryTheBrave

No, I’m not gonna waste 25 min.

      • Aaron

Which is why he said: “The comment comes in at about 24 and a half minutes in.”

  • HARP2

If I had the power to give Booker a brain, I would.

Let’s use New Jersey as a pilot for the rest of the country. Ban and confiscate guns from lawful citizens in New Jersey and we’ll see if crime rates go up or down.

    • BeeKaaay

We already have had pilots. DC. Chicago.

We saw what happened to crime rates when they banned guns.

      • peteee363

they never banned all guns in chicago, nobody told the gang bangers!

        • BeeKaaay

Guns were banned for all non-criminals. Criminals didn’t care about the ban anyway and held their own guns.

  • Jack Deth

Don’t feel so stupid and insignificant, Cory.

Then Lt. Governor, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend wanted to ban “Bushmaster” rifles in the state of Maryland right after Muhammed and Malvo claimed their first victims.

Then several representatives of the NRA reminded her that as Lt. Governor, she couldn’t do s*it without putting it on a ballot.

Not surprisingly, the proposed ban was not on the ballot. And she lost in the following gubernatorial election to Robert Ehrlich.

If I had the power to ban abortions and shut down Planned Parenthood, I would. 335,000 abortions in 2011 and they received over $500M in tax dollars. Can you say Hyde Amendment violation? What hurts children more?

  • bonnieblue2A

Of I had the power to ban every politician who sought to undermine and restrict the Constitutionally affirmed natural rights of the people, I would.

Every politician who speaks to place restrictions input rights should be humiliated and cower in shame. There should be criminal consequences for breaking one’s oath to uphold and defend the US Constitution.

When the Bill of Rights was adopted the compromise was about how far to limit the reach of the hand of government upon the people. Now the governments” conversation is about how much of the peoples’ liberty they can regulate, restrict and ban.

  • Hiraghm

“In fact, we’re even looking towards doing some local level handgun legislation.”
You can’t, jackass. See Amendment 2 of the Constitution.

    • GaryTheBrave

As well as the recent SCOTUS decisions plus the Firearm Owners’ Protection Act (FOPA).

  • BeeKaaay

If I had the power to ban leftwingwackoism, I would.

Leftwingwackoism is nothing but how to hurt people by using the government, slaughtering children in the most painful way possible, hurting anyone who disagrees with you, and benefiting only leftwingwacko elites at the expense of non-Marxists.

…”who might commit crimes…” really? I guess it’s a good thing he doesn’t have that power.

  • JesLHW

“And I know in my urban environment, I see little to no need for guns at all.”

Because urban environments are just so SAFE! No one in such places could ever need a gun for self-defense.

  • Soco Steve

and if I could ban drugs I’d do that too, wait, they are banned and yet, they are everywhere.

The only thing saving Bookers rear end is his bodyguards,Yea they have GUNS.What don’t you understand.I forgot he is a liberal idiot..My bad.

  • Foxxman

What a dope! Every time gun bans have been tried anywhere, murder rates have gone up…dramatically. In Ireland, Jamaica, England, Wales and Australia, the same thing happened every time. Murder rates failed to decline as promised, instead the rates went UP after the guns were “gone.” One report from Australia says murders by gun are up 44% over the pre-ban levels.

It’s really a simple fact. Banning guns disarms law-abiding citizens – not criminals who don’t give a damn about the law. Does anyone really believe that a meth manufacturer will ever willingly give up his/her weapons? Do dopes like this imagine that if his city banned guns, the Bloods and Crips would meekly turn their guns in at the local precinct? Seriously?

Freedom and safety go hand in hand. Our forefathers knew this, so they wrote it in the barest, plain English. The citizen’s right to bear arms shall NOT be infringed. These “enlightened” liberal politicians and the sheeple who support them are dumber than a box of rocks.

  • bicentennialguy

Umm, I don’t think he would. For some reason, I think he values his life too much to do that. These people talk a nice line to fire up their trash base, but in reality, they know they could never do it without serious repercussions.

  • lainer51

that is why we have a constitution – to protect us from people that “If I could, I would” – be damned anyone who disagrees with me….

  • RightThinking1

Interpretation: “If I were in control, I would void the Bill of Rights”

  • Wishsong

I have a feeling we’ll be seeing this guy a lot more after the next election.

Ah the dreams of a Dictator.

  • Liberty Ranger

If I had the power to grant Cory’s mom a retroactive abortion I would.

so his experiences with firearms are related to the high shooting rates where is lives…a state with already tough gun laws..and lots of gangs and lots of illegals..and lots of crime..a state known to many as the arm pit of America..a state where a recent poll says most people want to leave…yet banning guns is the most important thing he can come up with. He needs to focus on job creation and expanding law enforcement to combat the ILLEGAL uses of firearms..not the legal firearm owners who went through the back ground checks and paid for their firearms in a LEGAL store and who lock up their firearms. Actually get the police to arrest gang members and drug dealers and maybe help small businesses grow and expand so they can hire more people and help contribute to making your city and state a better place. Maybe stop going after your Governor for his policies that seem to be working and maybe work with him and support him. Ban guns…is that all you can say?? weak…
