Oh boy: US Energy Dept. teases ‘major announcement’; Update: Not rain sticks; Critical Materials Hub announced

The suspense is killing us.

Here are some of your guesses so far:

We’ll know soon enough. Meanwhile, a possible clue:

More on that here. (via Jeryl Bier)

Ding ding ding! Jeryl is our winner!

We were really hoping for rain sticks.

is it a “new source of energy” that’ll take years to develop but still is excuse enough to shut down other energy sources?

Looks like paraphernalia that pairs well with pot-smoking or drug use. Or else something they found while cleaning out the storage closets at Current TV.

Nothing excites me like an announcement from a federal department. Just can’t wait.

  • http://twitter.com/thetugboatphil TugboatPhil

The announcement will be the Energy Dept’s new 3 stage plan for energy independence:

    1. Unicorn Factories
    2. Rainbow powered Love Machines
    3. Strawberry scented welfare checks.

Whatever it is, it needs to be subsidized.

    You know …”investments”.

  • disqus_eric

    Found it:

Doh! That’s what the “here” link in the article is all about.

    • Slapweasel

Yup… like the last tweet suggests. Europium (Eu).

It is a superconductor when chilled below 1.8K and compressed to above 80 GPa.

    • mickeyco

Thanks. I read it. Still don’t have a clue what it is.

  • marcellucci

If you hold your ear up to the screen, you can hear a faint flushing sound……

  • Kevin Krom

    “Extruded High Purity Europium(Eu) Metal”

apparently, that’s legit and is the big announcement. When I (semi-)read that tweet earlier, I thought someone was doing a pun for “Hopium”, and didn’t pay it much attention.

  • stuckinIL4now

So it’s europium that’s used in energy-efficient lights? Is it anything like how mercury is used in allegedly energy-efficient light bulbs?

  • mary kile

Isn’t europium a “rare earth element” very expensive to produce? “It tarnishes quickly in air at room temperature, burns at about 150 C to 180 C and reacts readly with water.”
Why can’t the Dept of Energy have an “initiative” that isn’t overwhelmingly expensive? I know this administration is pushing clean energy as far as it cans, but when we can’t even produce a budget because we are so in debt, the responsible answer would be to postpone some of those brilliant “initiatives.”

  • Dave Silva

so is this another new light bulb that will give us all cancer?

  • GTFOBigGovt

I wanted to reply something sarcastic about probably not relating to getting my incandescent bulbs back then europium happened. I hate these people.
