Joyce Carol Oates: ‘Maybe guns are a guy thing’

Author Joyce Carol Oates has made no secret of her hatred of all things gun, but today, she also proudly displayed her idiocy. In her hours and hours of quiet musing, Oates has evidently determined that guns must just be “a guy thing” (clearly she hasn’t met these gun-owning gals). She also suggested that there are “too many of you.” Too many of whom? Guys? Or just the wrong kind of guys?

Ah, yes. Nanny Bloomberg. A man’s man.

Joyce Carol Oates sneers at those who never heard of ‘JCO’ until her NRA death wish

  • Kevin Randall

Sounds like a spawn of the ’60’s drug laden rant. Certainly she can’t be an acredited normal minded soul of distinction.

  • Jefferson Tea Party

Maybe Morticia’s ugly sister doesn’t realize that women are getting C&Cs in record number?

    • louisiana_mom

I have almost saved enough for a new pistol (thinking about a Glock or a Sig) and then I’ll get my C&C. :)

      • TomJB

They didn’t have the one I wanted in stock so we got a nice Sig .22 for my wife. First time shooting and she loved it! Gotta get in to order mine soon, it looks.

    • PennyRobinsonFanClub

Take that back! Say NOTHING to connect this thing with Morticia!

  • ZoriahShepard

Wow. Too many men huh? She’s sounding dangerously close as a man-hater. Her thought process confounds me.

    • Slapweasel

Cut the ribbon on those “Re-Education Camps”! Comply-Or-Die, I guess?

  • Lord Foggybottom

Maybe stupidity is a liberal thing essentially, and there are definitely too many of you.

    • BristolGOP Backup

In the spirit of compromise, I propose we ban all women from owning guns! /sarc

  • Bui van vat

My wife is the gun owner in our household. I had no idea I was in a gay marriage. They’re not even legal in Nebraska

  • erika348

What a dunce! I’m a proud WOMEN gun owner and I enjoy the sport!

  • David

Ms Oates, I’d be “confident” too if I was surrounded by armed security.

  • RichardBlaine

My ex-wife carried a revolver & a CCW permit, & I’m guessing she still does today. She’d been raped twice while in college, and held up at gunpoint once. She vowed: Never Again! “Guy thing”, my a$$!!!

    • Ardell Simon

I agree “Guy thing”, my a$$!!!

  • journogal

I am a female and have a gun. I don’t have a CCW, but will soon; and to celebrate, I am going to purchase another gun. Need to do it soon, though, before everything is gone. Understand pickings are starting to get slim.

  • traffic_robot

Yes, there are a disproportionate number of male gun owners in comparison to women, particularly those in prohibited categories. That’s why many women own guns. You’re a smart one, Joyce.

  • detroit19

Just when you think you’ve heard it all…smh.

  • Jillane Kent

Anyone who has read her books (I admit I have, with a sense of shame) should be able to garner how she feels about men. Her prose read like sophisticated “Lifetime” channel offerings where the women are always tragic and the men are aggressors who love to victimize them.

    • Lord Foggybottom

Like Barack Obama and Bob Beckel? 😉

      • Jillane Kent

If a D follows their name, an exemption is granted.

    • TomJB

Ahhh, thats it! If women had the ability to protect themselves, they wouldn’t need to read her books for commiseration! Scratch a liberal, find a greedy miser looking to cash in on something in which they are invested.

    • PennyRobinsonFanClub

Haha, I once asked my wife if they called that other one the “Oxygen” network because “Estrogen” was just too obvious!

/Yes, I got some very displeased scowls.

    • ProgTrog

Thank you for acknowledging that this statement by Joyce Carol Oates was sexist profiling of men.

  • Jack Deth

And I thought Edith Plath’s scribbling made men want to lay their veins and arteries open from wrist to elbow.

This woman truly is too stupid to breathe.

  • Kevin

If there are too many guys, I call for more guns… time to thin the herd.

  • bonnieblue2A

Some women buy insanely expensive clothes, shoes and accessories. I buy firearms. Unlike designer fashions, my firearms continue to appreciate in value, even after sending thousands of rounds down range.

Most women with a brain aren’t fearful of inanimate objects which, with training, they can employ for the defense of themselves and/or the loves of their loved ones.

Clue: unlike America’s busybody nanny Bloomberg, real men aren’t intimidated by the abilities of others too keep and bear arms. Real men don’t attempt to stop women from having the ability to use lethal force in defense of life.

    • TugboatPhil

Real men know that even if they voice a disapproval of guns, taking a woman to the range on a date is a sure fire winner! I don’t think I could live with a woman that didn’t appreciate guns for the valuable resource that they are.

    • BristolGOP Backup

      Nanny Bloomburqa.

  • grais

She should stop living in her little bubble and get out and learn about the real world and the people in it.
    Or not.

  • TugboatPhil

A “guy thing?” That would be laughed out of the room with the women in my family. Any one of them could more easily protect Ms Oates than she could herself.

  • SpinMeNot

Maybe liberty is a common sense thing, and it appears to be a conservative belief and their may not be enough of us.

  • annoyinglittletwerp

Really, Ms Oats? This decidedly non-guy took her beginner’s shooting class today. It makes me feel safer knowing that if the need arises, little me-who’s all of 5’2-can defend my family and home against the criminal element. GIRL POWER!

  • mickeyco

How come I managed to get along for 25-30 years without hearing a word from her and the past couple of months she’s all over the place with her semi-coherent maunderings?

  • constitutional right

What poppycock. Californian Kim Rhode made history last year as the 1st American to win gold in 5 consecutive Olympics. And she won those medal for the United States using her shotgun and her amazing marksmanship skills. And she is a women. Millions of women are also proud gun owners like Ms. Rhode.

Ms. Oates should be ashamed of herself.

    • ProgTrog

Funny how you can twist “We need to get rid of a lot of men in order to push gun control” into a slam against WOMEN in your mind. There was an element of that to it of course, but this was vile sexism directed squarely at MEN. Men were the ones in the crosshairs, even if women were collaterally-damaged.

  • TheKingJAK

I don’t know, all the ladies I’ve known can’t seem to get enough of me. :-p

  • Guest

This Joyce Carol lunatic looks like she eats her Oats through a split-rail fence {cue horse whinny sound effects}.

Here’s the kind of woman I find much more intelligent and compelling:

  • linzyloo2

One of the best (material) gifts I’ve ever received was a shotgun. My Dad gave it to me. Not only do I cherish it because it was his, but it was a great comfort to me after my husband passed. I had an infant daughter and knowing how to safely use it really made me feel more comfortable at home. There is absolutely nothing wrong with women owning guns! It’s my job as a mom to be able to protect my child.

  • Jack Deth

    Memo to Ms. Oates:

If guns are a “guy thing”, why would Smith & Wesson have created a line of smaller framed and gripped, “Lady Smith” lighter revolvers and automatic handguns marketed specifically for women back in the 1980s?

And why, over the years, would that line of firearms become one of S&W’s best and most popular sellers?

You really should have something intelligent to say before opening your pie hole. It does nothing but embarrass you.

  • TomJB

Yep. “too many men.” Other countries first disarmed the people before declaring there were “too many” of such or another undesirable demographic. Bad things tended to happen shortly thereafter.

  • fivegreatkids

lol! I was raised in a family where the women are known as the best sharpshooters. My grandma’s guns are still in our possession and cherished. My great great grandmas were VERY comfortable using a gun — and had to a number of times to scare off unwanted “critters”. I can go back hundreds of years of females in my genealogy who were saved by their ability to use a gun. Obviously Joyce is not from a rural/frontier area.

  • Lisa Dean

Well, I can confidently say that I’m not a guy, but I’m one gun owning/loving chick. And from the many pictures of gun using, conservative women I can assure Joan Carol Oates that non of them look like guys. Unlike a few liberal women I’ve seen…

  • Shawn Smith

And once again we have exactly the kind of comment that liberals can make about men that conservatives could not make about . . . anybody.

Yes, there are clearly too many men. That’s the problem. Maybe we should just kill a bunch of them. That would solve things.

  • Marcy Cook

I’m surprised she even knows there are “guys” in the world.

…a lib/prog woman, catholic…I take great umbrage at being equated with that useless, whiny, power-hungry, soda grabbing, gun grabbing, shriveled up, dried out nut sack…oh, and I’m going to the shooting range again next week for Ladies Night with 3 friends if I can get a reservation – this past week was completely booked….can’t wait to kill me some targets!!!

Biden: Obama Might Use Executive Order to Deal With Guns

Vice President Joe Biden revealed that President Barack Obama might use an executive order to deal with guns.

  • walterc

Tell that to my 16 yo grand daughter. She started at age 7 with pink cricket and just got a scoped Remington .30-06 for Christmas.

They should teach gun safety in the public schools starting in Kindergarten.

  • Hello Jerry (D)

    Shut up, Olive Oyl.

  • ProgTrog

“Too many of whom? Guys? Or just the wrong kind of guys?”

Nice whitewash. I notice that nowhere in this piece is the word “sexism” used, which would most assuredly be used if anyone said “Maybe X is a gal thing, and there are too many of you”.

I’m quite sure the headline would be “CREEPY BITTER MISOGYNIST ALLUDES TO GENDERCIDE OF WOMEN!!!!!1111!!!!’”,or something like that, and not “Joyce Carol Oates: ‘Maybe guns are a guy thing’” or anything like that with appropriate names and sexes inserted.

The least you could do would be to show SOME,maybe not an equal, maybe not an equivalent, but SOME outrage about sexism directed against men by women,as this clearly was.

If you want to leave men hanging out in the breeze when women direct sexism at them, which will probably not be very serious but COULD be in the form of possibly fatal violence, why should men care when other men direct sexism at you, which will probably be a far greater threat to you and is more likely to come in the form of violence?

You’ve got enough articles with the word “misogynist” here to make a pretty good paperweight if printed out, but I have yet to see one decrying sexism directed at men.

What JCO said was both stereotyping of men AND women, and creepily veiled threat-ey, as in “There are too many of you, we need to get rid of some of you.”.

If you don’t start sticking up for men, there won’t be any to stick up for you when you need them, and despite contemporary belief, you WILL “need a man” at some point, I can guarantee it.

  • moonsbreath

First, Mz. Oates why don’t you meet a man to ask them.

  • RIChris

Does she realize that much of Michael Bloomberg’s confidence is instilled by the presence of his armed bodyguards?
