Joyce Carol Oates sneers at those who never heard of 'JCO' until her NRA death wish

Author Joyce Carol Oates took self-important “Don’t you know who I am?” condescension to a whole ‘nother level this morning when she sneeringly tweeted about herself in the third person.

How cute. Joyce Carol Oates even has a pet name for Joyce Carol Oates: “JCO.” And who can blame her? Who among us doesn’t have a special term of endearment for the woman who hoped the shooting deaths of NRA members would usher in gun control?

No worries, JCO. We know just who you are. How could we forget the literary giant bloodthirsty gun-grabber who likened Musket Morgan to a “crucified Negro”?

Update:

A Twitchy reader sums up JCO for JCO:

        • $1014973

For the record, I’m making fun of her for her idiotic political beliefs, her obvious arrogance and of course the fact that she looks like a body that was dragged out of the surf after a few weeks in the water. She’s that rare triple threat that comes from the left only once in a blue moon.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002109532283 Jillane Kent

Is her figurative wish for NRA supporters to die equally as “uncool”?

          • PapayaSF

Of course, and she deserves condemnation for that. But attacking the looks of a 74-year-old woman seems over the line.

  • TocksNedlog

    She’s an all-around ugly person.
This woman, who publicly wishes MURDER upon those of her fellow citizens with whom she disagrees, truly BELIEVES that she enjoys the moral high ground on this issue. Why? Because the NRA, she would have you believe, is RESPONSIBLE for mass shootings.
The true disease of liberalism is the near-total avoidance of personal responsibility.

    • conservativechick

Most liberal women are ugly mean and angry all the time.

      • Lana Del Rey

I’m sorry, but isn’t it the “liberal media” that promotes body standards and ruins America? So we’re going to give into the media by judging people based on appearance now? She may be a terrible person but that’s no excuse to hit below the belt. (Just keep critiquing her character.)

        • Catchance

Sorry… her character is ugly. She and Helen Thomas are two examples of what being ugly on the inside does to the outside.

        • $1014973

Maybe it’s her ugly character that has caused her to be so damn ugly.

Woman, thy name is vanity. Shame on you JCO for actually being surprised to find out that you are not important to millions of people in this world. Hey, maybe you can write another boring book about that.

  • George Washington Mclintock

Silly woman doesn’t think we have the slightest idea what she is up to. We’ve seen this before, from Hollywood types. When she chimed in after the Newtown shooting, it made me think of the literary review I’d read a few years ago that said “Joyce Carol Oates needs to get a life”(or something to that extent) in reference to how uninspired her stories sounded. So, fast-forward through a few years where even the literary sophisticates are ignoring her, and a blood-boiling tragedy occurs, and comes down as provocatively as possible on the side of the media-supported and Hollywood-endorsed position. Hell, she gave Piers Morgan a lynching metaphor defense when we were killing his stupid British ass on Twitter. Could she have been any more pathetic or blatant in her angling to get on tv? Next stage, “Dem stupid white folk is so angry cuz I bees so smart.” Of course we won’t buy your books lady, those who care know that they suck. Your pals at the literary mags have told us so. And we all had to read her work in school, and it’s terrific argument in favor of reading female authors that people actually buy, like J.K Rowling. Frankly, most of us are too experienced to fall for the old “you should have read this because you should ” pop culture fallacy that makes the careers of people like Oates. She can wallow in her pseudo-sophistication all she wants, Ayn Rand will always have more fans than she does.

  • Purple State

Here’s her original tweet: “If sizable numbers of NRA members become gun-victims themselves, maybe hope for legislation of firearms?”

She wasn’t hoping for anyone to die. She was asking IF it would take deaths of NRA members for the NRA to support gun safety measures. It’s a legitimate question, isn’t it?

    • GaryTheBrave

      No.

    • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

Wouldn’t that be the same thing as showcasing a few fetal deaths to support safety measures for the unborn? Oh wait….

      • Purple State

Yes, it probably would be. Would you support a left-aligned website misrepresenting that view as wishing death on said fetuses?

        • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

Last I checked, they already wish death on the unborn, with or without my support.

          • Purple State

Misrepresenting the view of an anti-abortion voice as wishing on death on said fetuses. That’s the hypothetical you’ve created here.

          • Hello Jerry (D)

Keep on projecting. You look like a bigger douche with every post.

          • Purple State

Why can’t we have a discussion of the issues without resorting to name-calling and insults?

    • JackBlair

Perhaps. But it was an absurd hypothetical.

      • Purple State

Twitchy isn’t criticizing the absurdity of it. They are spinning what she said into something she didn’t. They should correct the story.

        • Lana Del Rey

          Strawman argument, FTW.

          • Purple State

Then you don’t understand what a strawman argument is.

          • Hello Jerry (D)

I DO have two fancy English degrees. I have NEVER liked JCO’s work, and now I know why. Her moral compass is definitely warped.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002109532283 Jillane Kent

Her works appear often on AP Literature summer reading lists. Considering my child took that course at the age of 15 and found her writing to be rather pedantic and sophomoric, her ego might be just a tad over-inflated.

  • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

Isn’t it a sign of mental illness to refer to oneself in the third person? Sociopathy, or something? “Sad to learn that thousands who had never heard of “JCO” are now
determined not to buy the books of hers they would not have bought
    anyway.” -JCO

    • Purple State

      Nope.

      • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

        Oh, just narcissism:

Elsa Ronningstam, associate clinical professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School and author of “Identifying and Understanding the Narcissistic Personality”:
‘Referring to yourself in the third person creates distance between “I” and “he.” So if you have an exaggerated view of how great you are, you could be using this distance to make yourself even bigger.’

        Sounds about right.

        • DrSamHerman

          K:

I am a psychiatrist, and have been in practice for nearly 40 years. I do recognize narcissism when I see it, and in JCO I also notice what we call a collateral of attention-seeking as well.

      • Hello Jerry (D)

Spoken by an expert on mental illness…

    • Jer

Jer does not like your post. Jer thinks your post lacks the appropriate level of reverence for the greatness that is JCO. Jer is going to go look lovingly at himself in the mirror now.

      • mickeyco

        nice, Jer

    • disqus_ys7YLGvSbv

      I thought the same thing!

    • DrSamHerman

It is a symptom, but not necessarily a defining symptom, to refer to oneself using the third person continually. In the context of Joycie, it is primarily narcissism and stupidity.

I read some of her work, but that was years ago and she hasn’t exactly been burning up the sales charts for a long time. Most of her fans are the types who agree with her politically and most of her fans also think anything west of the Hudson is an abyss of “flyover country”.

  • Jim J

In the early days of the WWW there was a site run by conservative English majors (I know, right?) and it used to attack JCO’s left wing moonbattery pretty hard. It had a very subversive, pirate vibe and was called The Jolly Roger. I sometimes wonder what happened to those guys.

    • JackBlair

Yes, I remember Jolly Roger – Kill Devil Hill, right? Good times, old man – good times.

  • ZoriahShepard

I wasn’t impressed with her writing. Which is why I didn’t go back for more. I guess the public in her eyes fall in 2 categories: those who love her and those who haven’t read her books…yet.

    • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

I had the fortune to not know of this person until a few weeks ago. I must not be well read, or I just preferred Dumas over her work.

      • mickeyco

You’ve been fortunate, indeed. Almost anyone with a choice prefers some other author. Brings new meaning to boring.

  • Garth Haycock

Ms. Oates (whoever you are) – I guess you have to keep reminding yourself that you matter because nobody else will, eh? Here’s something for you to think about: when you talk a lot, but say nothing, nobody listens.

    • Purple State

So Twitchy is nobody. Got it.

      • Guest

Garth, run along now. I hear JCO calling you.

      • Catchance

Um… Twitchy is a site. Michelle would never refer to herself in the third person.

  • stuckinIL4now

I’ve known for decades who JCO is and I’ve never read her work because it has never appealed to me. Also, I don’t recall any of my high school or college English teachers ever considering her relevant enough to assign a work of hers to read. And now that she’s outed herself as a snooty, arrogant, small-minded leftistproglibturd (ooh, sorry for the redundancy), I really have no desire to read anything she’s written. I can barely get through her tweets without wanting to toss my laptop out the window into the snow.

    So it’s true.

Popeye did leave her — and who can blame him after Sweet Pea’s gender bender transition to Pea Wea Hermione then running away to join the circus because of her and her torrid extramarital affair with child abuser Brutus — and now Olive Oyl is nothing more than a wealthy self-serving bitter Old Maid whose sophomoric ramblings on paper have inadvertently benefited from a huge P.R. boost due to her inane diatribes belying her utter vapidity on Twitter.

Sounds like a heckuva sequel. Or better yet — Hollywood’s current favorite thing — a heckuva reboot.
