Newspaper editor who published gun owners' personal info protects her Twitter account

As Twitchy reported, over the weekend, New York’s Journal News published an interactive map pinpointing all legal handgun permit holders — names and addresses included — in Westchester and Rockland Counties. In doing so, the Journal News not only violated personal privacy but also essentially put those who live in gun-free households at risk. Editor and VP CynDee Royle, responsible for publishing the story, proudly stands by her decision to violate others’ personal safety … by bravely running away.

In a blatant example of “for me, but not for thee” syndrome, Royle has deleted her Facebook profile and maintains a protected Twitter account, meaning only those whom she approves can access her deep, thoughtful tweets. Perhaps Royle just doesn’t have the guts to face the righteous indignation of gun rights advocates.

Many people are calling for Royle’s personal information to be published (some have already published it). We will not be linking to any of it. Unlike Ms. Royle, we don’t subscribe to the Spike Lee School of Intimidation.

Then they wonder why gun owners are leery of registration schemes…

    • BlueGood

Simple, just get her Home Address and post it to every Black & Asian Gang in NY State,….see if she likes the attention!

  • walterc

This is why gun registration is a stupid idea. It just let’s the criminal element and the government (a bit redundant I know) where the guns are and are not located. This newspaper put gun owners an non gun owners alike at risk for attack. But as long as it sells newspapers, consequences be damned.

    • ked5

and put at risk women who purchased guns for protection from violent ex-boyfriends who now know where they live

  • Conrad2010

Royle is the defining definition of the word Bitch.

    • TugboatPhil

And also Chicken Sh*t. What a “profile in courage.” She puts people, including her readers, at risk and then hides like coward.

To be fair, it looks like Royle’s twitter account has ALWAYS been protected — i.e., she didn’t just protect it in the last few days, to avoid people attacking her over the maps (unlike, e.g., unhinged leftist professor Erik Loomis):

    1. Her current twitter page looks the same as the older, pre-controversy page still available in Google cache, here:

    2. There’s no archive of her tweets on

In my opinion, the most powerful points made to date about Royle publishing maps of gun owners:

    1. Ann Althouse, that this puts non-gun-owners at risk by making it easy for criminals to find soft crime targets:

    2. Brian Jacoutot (on Legal Insurrection), that this treats gun owners (with permits) like sex offenders:

    2. There’s no archive of her tweets on (unlike the case of unhinged leftist prof Erik Loomis, who did have a public twitter account and then deleted it after the controversy arose over him calling for the assassination of the head of the NRA)..

I love you Michelle, but I must say you’re a bit soft. The cliches “fight fire with fire” and “sauce for the goose…” are apropos at a time like this.

    • AaronHarrisinAlaska

Yea, because posting a persons personal information, phone number, home address, what kind of car they drive, and license plate number all scream safe, sane, and maturity. Fight fire with fire and your only going to get burned.

      • Grumpa Grumpus

I used to agree w/your point of view.
However, reason will not sway these people.
They continue to escalate their antics b/c there is insufficient cost or retaliation when they’re caught.

Like the drunk driver who is just given warnings, they drink more and drive more… and the first few accidents won’t stop their antics, either.

No. In this case, the “fight fire w/fire only get you burned” is a false analogy whereas the original is accurate. It’s origin comes from fighting wildfires, where a counter-burn is used to starve the major fire of fuel to continue to spread.

If a few Proggies got “burned” for their anti-social behavior rather than having it rewarded by no penalty and proggie-kudos there’d be fewer “useful idiots” willing to do these things.

      • NRPax

Aaron, the paper had no business posting that information. What we’re dealing with are people that have no concept of right or wrong. They honestly can’t see how harmful it is to get that information out in the public eye.

Polite discourse and reason have failed. It is now time to show them how harmful this is by subjecting them to the same treatment. If it is morally right in their eyes to list names and addresses of law-abiding citizens, then they should be just fine with the same being done to them. If they dislike it, then perhaps they should rethink their viewpoint.

        • AaronHarrisinAlaska

Except if they dislike it they have the entire media and vocal public opinion to back it up. You’re only burning your self. The only way to beat liers and cheaters is with truth.

          • NRPax

Releasing actual information such as names and numbers of these people is not being deceptive. If they complain, we have more than one media outlet to work with. The joy of it is that there is no longer a small amount of gatekeepers of information.

One important life lesson I learned years ago: The only thing a “Moral High Ground” is good for is a place to stage artillery. They are the ones that picked this fight. Curling up and hoping they will play nice is naive.

      • Jason Hunt

There was a time when I would have spoken of taking the proverbial ‘high road’; However, modern progressives seem to have no appreciation for the ‘high road’ any more. It may take being burned for them to learn appropriate behavior.

Liberals tend to act like children, and may need to be treated as such.

        • NRPax

Kind of like how you pull a child’s hair or pinch them when they don’t understand how much that hurts? Pretty much the same logic with people like that unfortunately.

      • Terramom

No, this woman needs to understand the implications of what she has done. She is a bully, and bullies need to experience the same kind of havoc they wreak on others.

  • George Washington Mclintock

Good reason for abolishing gun-licenses. They are hiding behind FOI, which is also a good argument for their info being published/ I mean, can anyone who gives out your info be taught by anything other than some of the same?

    • AaronHarrisinAlaska

Because the only reason to hand out her PI at this point is intimidation. The desire for her to experience how outrageous her decision was first hand and to know the fear some of these people may have felt. That’s not the right mature thing to do.

      • imtorqued

I disagree. It is EXACTLY the right thing to do.

        • AaronHarrisinAlaska

It’s your reputation. Not mine. Go right ahead. See how far it gets you.

      • Grumpa Grumpus

Check my response to this above.

The fact that you are reiterating the same point, in a prejorative fashion casts your argument (“I’m being adult here, and looking at this objectively…”) as suspect.

There is a reason you use this method — “what’s good for one is good for the other” — to teach children. And both intellectually AND emotionally, that’s the level of development of Progressives: children. That’s why so much of their “thought process” is simply justifying emoting and magical thinking.

Claiming that it is “not the mature thing to do” causes me to wonder: what, in your mind, IS the mature thing to do?
Has it already been tried ad nauseum? And, IF it has, and obviously hasn’t worked, what do YOU suggest?

It is exceedingly to pretend that you are “above the fray” and being “the only adult in the room” while suggesting NOTHING. That gimmick was done to extremes by the last two DumperCrat presidents.

But they NEVER offered “an adult” solution, nor any solution, really.

Is that what you are doing, or do you have a point?

        • AaronHarrisinAlaska

No. And it this point I don’t need to explain why. Go ahead, play with fire.

      • Donna #TeamUSA

Libs NEED to be intimidated. Hopefully, a gangbanger will get Cynde Royel’s personal info from the net, break into her house & beat the hell out of her. She might understand why people who have been on the receiving end of crime want to be able to protect themselves with their 2nd Amendment rights.

        • AaronHarrisinAlaska

Why? Because she offended people? And so now she deserves to be physicle abused for it? If that’s the case I’m now arguing with a monster. “She was asking for it” is all I’m reading from you

You’re spoiling everyone’s thirst for revenge, Aaron. You’re right, but you’re no fun.

        • tredglx

He’s not right, and neither is Michelle.
Look, this ‘reaching across the aisle’ garbage has gotten us nowhere, in politics as well as public discourse with the left. Until we take the fight to them – and make it worse for them than they make it for us – we can expect more Spike Lee, more dirty tricks, more Michael Moore, more of everything that they use against us, whether our position is intelligent, rational and credible or not. We’re in the age of low-information decision making now. For God’s sake, how do you think 0bama got re-elected? It wasn’t because he’s the best man for the job because clearly, he is NOT. It’s because the left painted Romney as one step shy of Satanic, and kept hammering that message until they found something new.
No. Burn the left as badly, if not more so, than they burn us. Until our side grows a pair and embraces this, we’re going to be going down a long dark road.

          • AaronHarrisinAlaska

You seem to be forgetting that those Michael moores and Spike Lees have stages to stand on and an ready and willing audience and authoritative figures willing to ignore them “for the greater good” you can’t fight them on their grounds. Ever heard the phrase “never argue with an idiot?” It says “he’ll drag to his level and beat you with experience”. We HAVE to take the high road. They’ll never reach us when we do. Twitter has been a good example of this.

        • AaronHarrisinAlaska

It’s more fun when you reveal the vile monsters they are with out ever actively seeking to harm them. Beat them in Washington, leave the private lives alone v

          • NRPax

Leave the private lives alone? You mean like they did to the gun owners in this article?

  • AaronHarrisinAlaska

She claims she did it because people have a right to be informed. Informed of what? And why? She implies that legal gun owners cause no harm. Yet publishing a map of their homes and names so “people can be informed” implies something negative. The time in which the map was published also suggests something sinister. If she’s honest that she meant no harm than its simply Orwellian one feels the need to have the information of lawful Americans so easly and readly accessible simply because they are gun owners

  • TexDaddy57

More importaltly, the gun free homes were not published. now the bad guys can just pick a house not on the list………

  • TocksNedlog

I would call this person a revolting pile of dog crap, but I do not wish to be that insulting to dogs . . . OR their crap.

  • imtorqued

Sorry, but I think we should do unto them what they do unto us. The will NEVER stop until they feel the same sting.

    • AaronHarrisinAlaska

Eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind. I’ve never seen a war of words won with more harsh words.

  • Marty Luther

Liberals would have us register to use any of our Rights. They would call them “Permits”, as in “the government will temporarily permit you to use this Right until such time as we need to control you even further”. >>> FORWARD to Fundamental Transformation.

    • GTFOBigGovt

Which is EXACTLY what happened with the Nazi Weapons Act of 1938.

  • KahNayNay

My gun is not registered and will never be registered…I wonder how many “gun free” homes actually have weapons that are not registered??? I know my house is one of those….I wish I knew where this beyatch lived because I would be out in front of her house with a picket sign and protesting with others, until I was on the news protesting her house…..people need to go Alinsky on her. Show up to her house and protest and make all kinds of racket in the middle of the night to scare the heck out of her….a bull horn into her window would be awesome.

  • $5326605

So is the newspaper going to pay to relocate the women who have gun permits due to stalkers and abusive spouses now that the paper has revealed their new addresses? What about the children who spent Christmas in a shelter or motel because their mother had to run thanks to the newspaper outing her new hidden location?

    • kindamara

Better yet, have the newspaper provide individual body guards for each of the women they outed! To be fair, there may have also been men in a similar situation. They should be protected as well.

      • BeautifulAmerica

Will the newspaper pay these guards to have GUNS to protect the women?

  • libertychicktoo

The irony is this: how many people NOT on the list will now run out and buy a (legal) gun? Nobody wants to be the one unarmed person.

  • captaingrumpy

Where did she get the list from.?? Maybe the COPS are in on this ,HEH.

  • Sheldon Cooper

I’m hoping the people affected sue this liberal rag out of existence. What a stupid bitch.

  • ked5

    well – for CenDee Royale. This one is for you;

Brave Sir Robin ran away. (“No!”)

Bravely ran away away. (“I didn’t!”)

When danger reared it’s ugly head, He bravely turned his tail and fled. (“no!”)

Yes, brave Sir Robin turned about (“I didn’t!”)

And gallantly he chickened out. ****Bravely**** taking (“I never did!”)

to his feet, He beat a very brave retreat.(“all lies!”)

Bravest of the braaaave, Sir Robin!(“I never!”)

  • Terramom

It’s already been published. And people like this don’t think things through before they do such stupid, irresponsible things. She has invited harm to her fellow Americans and New Yorkers–will she really be happy if someone gets robbed or killed because of her actions? I think the only way to stop this kind of thing is to fight fire with fire. And that’s why it’s important that her information be published. She’s a bully, so we stand up to bullies.
