Many Kwanzaa revelers choose to overlook founder's criminal past

Today marks the first day of Kwanzaa, the weeklong holiday invented in 1966 by Dr. Ronald Everett, aka Maulana Karenga. While relatively few people celebrate Kwanzaa, many of those who are celebrating are likely not considering the history of its founder.

But what kind of man was he?

Karenga has a long criminal record. In 1971, for instance, Everett served time in jail for assault. By then Everett had changed his name to Maulana Ron Karenga and began to affect a pseudo African costume and act the part of a native African — even though he had been born in the USA.

It wasn’t mere assault Karenga was convicted of, either. It was the sexual assault and even torture that he perpetrated against some of his own female followers. At the time, The L.A. Times reported that he placed a hot soldering iron in one woman’s mouth and used a vise to crush another’s toe, of all things.

Despite knowing about Karenga’s violent background, some people see nothing wrong with reveling in his legacy:

It doesn’t? Really?

It’s a bit difficult to detach a violent, misogynistic rapist from what his admirers view as his crowning achievement. Karenga does not deserve to be honored.

I had no idea about what kind of guy Kwanzaa’s founder was. What a sick, horrible man.

FYI, the times of year Christmas and Easter are celebrated have pagan roots, but not the holidays themselves nor their meanings.

  • Canadian in USA

Very similar to the guy who started Earth Day – killed his girlfriend and held her body in his apartment. Of course, nobody ever mentions that during Earth Day celebrations.

    • wwbdinct

Ira Einhorn. Murdered her and stuffed her in a trunk until they found her a year later. Gotta love these wacky, peace loving libbies!

      • TugboatPhil

Let’s not forget also that his lawyer at one time was Arlen Specter.

    • radicallyalyssa

Earth Day reps said that he wasn’t – psychos WILL say anything to become famous and well-known…

      • CherDash

There is a picture in a book I have about the Ira Einhorn case where he is speaking @Earth Day.

This is interesting. Kwanzaa is a racist holiday anyway.

  • GTFOBigGovt

The irony. All 7 themes of Kwanzaa have been widely rejected by the mainstream urban cores. Well, except Theme 4 Collective Economic strength, clearly Obamao’s favorite.Theme 3 Collective Work and Responsibility? Not so much.

    • SpinMeNot

And lets not forget that all 7 of the themes are communist/marxist in origin, at least one of them uses the word race, and several allude to it.

  • fivebyfive

Holiday made up for urban schools to push SOCIALISM

  • radicallyalyssa

I don’t know how anyone could detach a sadistic rapist from anything he created.

    • TugboatPhil

Hollywood folks absolutely love and forgive the convicted rapist, Roman Polanski. Their usual excuse is that his “art” far exceeded anything he may have done in the past….after drugging the underage girl and raping and sodomizing her.

    • Jillane Kent

Sadly it worked for Mohammed didn’t it?

      • walterc

        That was my thought.

  • fivebyfive

Take a look at planned parenthood founder Margret Sanger all the libs so called heros are VILE human beings in real life

    • Stephanie Warren

      Is that surprising?

  • Rightturn

How about the fellas who invented the United States- kept people locked up in chains in their backyards.

    • TugboatPhil

Shouldn’t you be doing something in D.C., Mr Biden?

    • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

You’re very free with that comment. However, I see nothing pointing to how those people got here in the first place. Maybe you should ask the tribal elders back in Africa why they sold their own people into slavery, eh?

      • Rightturn

Right so as long as they’re selling, we’ll take ’em, right?? Nothing wrong with that. Supply and demand- capitalism at its finest, eh?

        • Lisa Dean

I’m not sure about you but I’ve never owned a slave in my lifetime. This “holiday” was invented in my lifetime by a man who took advantage of women and his own people.

    • Jillane Kent

Or the founders who freed slaves and argued against the institution, but never let facts get in the way of your non sequiturs.

    • GTFOBigGovt

Oh slavery? We won’t be so harsh with you since you’re probably not American or a product of an American government school who has received virtually no useful education and allowed to languish with no intellectual curiosity as long as you learn the “US is bad” narrative.

Just FYI, slavery was “invented” (institutionalized) as far back as you can go even documented to about the 4th century BC in ancient Greece/Rome.

When those fellas came here, slavery existed everywhere including Arab regions, The UK, China, Japan, The Ottoman Empire, Romania, Portugal, Spanish New World, Canada, Sweden, South America, Australia and pretty much everywhere you can mention with the possible exception of India, where the caste system was employed as a rationale that certain groups were not human beings to begin with, and eventually Indians were sold as slaves to other countries. .

And of course, the primary slave labor pool you’re referring to came from Africa thanks to elite native Africans who bled the entire continent of human resources in the tens of millions sold and shipped around the world. The first Holocaust.

Then you have your Pacific Islanders who were outright kidnapped (not even purchased) or blackbirded by the Australians, etc. – Illegally even after Britain had already abolished slavery but the colony of Australia ignored it. Or threw their slaves overboard to get rid of them.

You realize that Australia outlasted the US in slavery. In 1967, Aborigines and Torres Strait islanders were finally granted the vote and many welfare benefits, such as subsidized housing, education and employment, but South Sea islanders were ignored.

A 1977 Royal Commission Into Human Relationships in Australia called this discrimination. “The South Sea Islanders are not eligible for these benefits unless they claim to be aboriginals, a claim which many feel is a denial of their own origin,”

Last time I heard, over 20K descendants of Pacific slander slaves in AU are STILL not allowed to be property owners and suffer racist discrimination even by the Aboriginal natives.

Those fellas in America freed institutionalized black slaves in America after a brief period of about 100 years here (compared to centuries elsewhere).

Then the NEW black slavery began, that being the heroin trade introduced to the black communities by Italian mafia immigrants and their OWN black African American mafia early in the 1900’s. The Italian mafia got the poppy from FRANCE and the big shot Harlem Black Mafia kingpin Frank Lucas was the one who decided to eliminate the middle man and directly imported it from Asia, initially using US military addicts as mules.

Those fellas have done alot more damage to the country and humanity than those fellas of the 1700’s, who for the most part, while not perfect, were brilliant heroes who created the most humanitarian and successful prototype of society known to man. Then Liberals happened.

You have to be a special kind of stupid to follow a make believe holiday by a rapist criminal. Plenty of stupid people in the world. Hell look at Islam. A made up cult from a pedofile warlord to scared to die.

  • Walknot

There are people out there who like to look at the “good” side of what Hitler accomplished…pfft. As are the followers of Kawanza, they are all useful idiots.

  • michael s
