Touré: You're not well if you want 'military-style weapons' to protect against the government

It’s funny how terms like “assault weapon” are used so casually (and incorrectly) in the debate over the Second Amendment, and yet “the government” is assumed to be universally understood. The government? It’s those buildings in Washington that keep us fed and housed and safe, right? Who’d fear that, at least while a Democrat is in office?

As many in the aftermath of the Newtown, Conn., massacre question the possible role of mental illness in that tragedy, MSNBC host Touré argues that just wanting “military-style” weapons is a sign that you’re not quite well — while at the same time arguing that talking about mental illness is an attempt to “evade the debate” over the real issue: “large clips and bullets.”

Breitbart.com’s Dana Loesch took Piers Morgan and others to school earlier today on the definition of assault weapon, but it looks like Touré skipped that class. Good thing Twitter was there to fill him in.

But the people are demanding action! A new poll shows that Americans don’t like those military-style semi-automatic assault guns.

Please, can we stop quibbling about definitions and facts and just pass some laws already?

Wait, Touré is black?

I was sooo hoping for BO to lose the election for a lot of reasons. Van Jones and Toure’ were not it. The MSM wants to keep them around so they (MSM) don’t look so stupid! The failures of BO (F&F, GM Bailout, Benghazi) are still in the news because all were so poorly handled to begin with. BO has not even started his second term. His answer to the Jake Tapper question today may be a sign the MSM is going to start to question Mr. HOPE&CHANGE about his decision making abilities. This country is more divided than I have seen it in my lifetime and it ain’t looking any better. Van Jones and Toure’ just need to be ignored. Maybe they will go away.

Hey, Mr. Toure…every once in awhile, “authority” figures go haywire for one reason or another. (See New Orleans, post Katrina). This here is a list of guns that I found self-professed “thugs,” “Gangbangers,” and “criminals.” brandishing in videos in videos on youtube: pistol-grip, sawed-off shotguns, .50 caliber handguns, mil-spec m-16 assault rifles with drum mags, automatic shotguns, machine pistols(Tec-9s, Uzis) with extended magazines, Ak-47s, wallet-guns,suppressed handguns, and pistols with laser sights. These are just street gangs. We all know what big-time organized crime is packing these days. We’ve seen the reports from Mexico. All these guns and accessories are restricted. or outright illegal All weapons used by the world’s armies and paramilitary forces. All in the hands of self-professed carjackers, burglars, drug-dealers, and killers in the United States . Not well? The people who aren’t well are the ones who deny the reality of evil and of predators, like Toure. American gun owners shouldn’t give up their AR-15s till Barry and the ATF address what I’ve seen. And from what, I’ve seen, we need access to more than ARs. Oh yeah? Most of these videos? Chicago and California.

  • Blake Waymire

Actually, a high-capacity magazine and good ROF are both pretty nice advantages to have for a defense weapon. If you can hit a guy with three rounds rapidly, that’s a better chance of killing him over using just one, and killing is the best way to stop someone who means you harm.

    • http://pennyrobinsonfanclub.net/ PennyRobinsonFanClub

On the other hand, I think you could make the argument that if you can’t hit the bad guy with 3 shots out of a ten-round mag, a 15 round mag isn’t gonna do ya much good anyway! Seriously, that’s a LOT of stray lead.

  • Michael Rice

Oh, look, in the wake of a legit respons I will hit them with a CNN poll.
We went down the assault ban once before. It did no good.
Large clips and mags. Limit my rounds to fiften and I steal two guns or an extra clip. DO you really thionk the few seconds it takes a guy tor eload is going enable an unarmed teacher or student to over power the guy?
If you do, you watch to many movies.

  • Nonya

If the military uses the .223 (a pea shooter) in their encounters with hostiles, say bye bye to the military.
Think it through before opening your mouth.

    • Cold War Grunt

Lets get the facts straight — the difference between the .223 Rem fired by an actual AR-15 and the 5.56 NATO is what? The physical difference is the throat — that is the distance between the mouth of the case and point where the ogive (that is not a typo) on the bullet engages the rifling of the barrel. In the 5.56 NATO it is greater.

A weapon chambered for 5.56 NATO also tends to have a beefier chamber, and therefore a higher pressure rating than most .223 Rem chambered weapons should safely fire. Note that there is a lot of “chatter” with regard chamber pressures between .223 Rem and 5.56 NATO as the two main international organizations that rate firearm rounds use different sensors to compute chamber pressure, and the chamber pressure numbers are disputed by some (not by me). Also note that chamber pressure varies between propellents, projectile weight, whether or not the projectile is crimped into the case, etc.

A 5.56 NATO chambered weapon can fire a .223 Rem, typically with less accuracy, as factory .223 Rem overall length is shorter (due to the larger throat distance in the 5.56 NATO). Firing 5.56 NATO from a weapon chambered for .223 is not a good idea for a number of reasons I won’t go into at this time.

The projectile is identical between the two calibers in base specification. The standard round used by the US Army fires a 57gr FMJ. That same projectile can be used by *any* .223 Rem chambered weapon. Note that the diameter of the .223 Rem projectile, the 5.56 NATO projectile and the .22 LR projectile is the same. However the .22 LR projectile is much smaller, lighter, and a simple lead / antimony, no-copper jacket round.

You might want to take your own advice.

Hey Toure, if it weren’t for civilian owned weapons you’d be working as a slave on some plantation in England with German as your primary language.

The revolutionary war was fought by loose militias using civilian owned weapons, to add, so was the civil war. Civilian owned weapons and the NRA are what armed black people when the democratic lead KKK terrorized blacks in the south during reconstruction.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/44F4AB4VSCTOCHBMBG4ZWWD5OU Laurel

      Well said!

  • Streetiebird

I tend to agree, the notion that the populace needs military-style weapons so that they can form a militia is a bit outdated. The debate should be focused around mental illness AND guns that can easily be used for mass slaughter.

Here’s an idea I heard from a gun-lover: Limit rifle-clips to only hold three bullets, for hunting purposes. If you miss your first shot you get another, if you miss your 2nd you get a last chance, and if you miss that one then your prey has bested you. Then you’ll have time to reload for the next try.

But yeah, just attack me instead if it makes you feel good.

    • SpinMeNot

Its not that simple, spoken like someone with no time spent in the outdoors? Done any hunting in Alaska? Ever been in the everglades or the a bayou in southern Louisiana? How many .308 Win does it take to put down a charging bear? A gator? An enraged wild boar?

3 is insufficient in all but the least dangerous of hunting situations. 5 is a minimum for safety when hunting in areas with large predators. I usually keep a magazine with 10 rounds in such situations, regardless.

Magazine capacity is not the issue, guns are not the issue. But for argument’s sake, lets say we pass a law that limits the magazine capacity to 3, what about revolvers? What about shotguns? What about bolt-action rifles with 5+ round internal magazines? What about lever action rifles with 7+ round internal tubular magazines? What about the millions of 20 and 30 round magazines already out there? What about the fact that magazines aren’t that difficult to manufacture in a garage?

Your suggestion is a starting point, but it doesn’t work for safety, or for the fact that the other types of guns I listed above have larger capacities internal capacity.

What if we deal with the root cause instead — an immoral culture that glorifies violence? What if we make it illegal to write songs that talk about killing cops, or make video games that allow people to pretend to be soldiers without any of the consequences, or play against each other and kill virtually? I’m not advocating for any of that personally, because well, its a free country.

More gun control laws are not the answer — they’ve not worked to date, they’ve not worked when tried elsewhere.
