Side-splitting: Progressive radio station closes, blames Obama for demise

Whip out your teeny tiny violins! It’s lights out at Columbus, Ohio, progressive talk radio station WVKO, and the station blames the Obama campaign and other Dems for failing to keep it afloat with those sweet, sweet ObamaDollars.

As conservative talker Tony Katz writes, “Their website reads as a cross between a sweet goodbye letter, and a double-crossed lover doing their best not to boil your bunny.” A snippet of that farewell:

[W]e had a good run with the station, and we were happy to in some small way contribute to the success that the Democrats enjoyed in November. Unfortunately, it was not a two-way street, and lack of advertising support from the Obama campaign all the way down to local races ensured that we will be unable to continue into the new year. I put my time, money, heart and soul into doing what I believed to be important for the country, but those who benefited most from our efforts chose to spend their campaign dollars elsewhere. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice….

It couldn’t be that progressive talk radio just never seems to find a foothold, could it? Cough, Air America, cough.

Sorry, progs. Obama’s just not that into you. At least, not enough to pour money into your sinkhole of a station.

The goodbye letter goes on to blame advertisers for pulling out and not returning the station’s calls (presumably made from ObamaPhones). Set down your drink and read more at Tony Katz’s blog.

Progressive talk radio always fails because nobody is interested in hearing the progressive agenda, yet they win elections. Does this smell funny to anybody else?

    • Anyone00

Sure there are people interested in hearing the progressive agenda: they can listen to the news agencies at ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN; they can listen to most Hollywood movies and TV show. And these other things in competition with progressive political talk radio have one major advantage: the people who listen to them exclusively still think they can claim to be a ‘moderate’.

      • Lord Foggybottom

A lot of the people who watch movies and news aren’t aware they’re being fed an agenda. You have to specifically tune in to progressive radio, MSNBC and current TV – which nobody does.

Talk radio must have substantial argument & discussion. Liberal ideas don’t very well withstand open discussion, so they have to manage their conversations very carefully, which is basically boring.

On the other hand, TV & movies can be all about pretty pictures & dishonest appeals to emotion without getting bogged down by that darned logic. That’s why talk radio is dominated by conservatives, yet liberals can flourish in entertainment.

Unfortunately, a well-told story can be much more persuasive than a well-crafted argument. We’re losing the culture wars, and that’s very dangerous.

I think the biggest problem is that the people who vote as a liberal don’t live their lives as a liberal; they raise their kids to be independent – not dependent, they go to church (and synagogue), they’re against gay marriage, they shoot guns… yet they vote (D). Very strange…

It doesn’t make money (but there’s still NPR). In Boston Clear Channel tried it and it flopped; later they would also try cons. talk and got rid of that, too, when it didn’t work out, so you libs out there blaming BainRomneyClearChannel, take heed. (For all those on the left who point the finger at CC, Lance Venta of RadioInsight.com points out Bain owns CC, but doesn’t operate it! So much for a political agenda. And yes they’ll take off cons talk if that flops, too.)…When nobody wanted to put libtalk on a Boston station after CC tried it, someone put it on as brokered time. That also flopped and the station went sports. So the guy now buys time –one hour–on a Worcester station. Prog talk fail…in BOSTON. (But hey, WGBH and WBUR
have powerful signals. And taxpayer dollars too!)

In Detroit Clear Channel _donated_ the prog talk station to a “minority media” group–and WDTW AM goes “dark” on Dec 31. Towers being dismantled, land sold, but someday it will re-emerge but not as prog talk.

Prog talk station in Detroit to go “dark”. “On the heels of the announcement that Clear Channel will be donating Progressive Talk WDTW AM 1310 Detroit to MMTC (The Minority Media and Telecommunications Council) comes the news that the station will end operations and go silent at midnight on December 31st. WDTW’s six tower array along I-94 east of Telegraph in Taylor will be dismantled after the station signs off.”–Portland OR: KPOJ from progtalk to Fox Sports. Seattle:

KFNQ from progtalk prob to CBS sports, next month. Here in “blue” New England the only progtalk stations are one in Brattleboro VT and one in Bangor ME (owned by a certain big lefty best known as a horror author; he took it off an FM simulcast and who knows, maybe the AM won’t survive either, but still on for now.). That’s it. In NEW ENGLAND. (Except for NPR.)

    Ooh, STAMP his little feet!

  • NCRelite

Prog talk is superfluous considering television, hollyweird, the major news nets, news publications, and academia mostly lean left. Why bother listening to AM radio when you can get your left wing talking points everywhere else? The right ceded ground in basically every sector of society which is why AM talk is a bastion of conservative thought. We’re all huddled in our proverbial bunkers listening to the Winston Churchills over the radio telling us to not give up hope

  • Steve_J

They couldn’t ge any real advertizers that would be there week in week out? They must have had a powerful message.
