Hero: Vicki Soto, 27, saved first-graders from shooter; Grieving sisters honor her sacrifice

Teacher Vicki Leigh Soto is a true hero.

As gunfire erupted at Sandy Hook Elementary School, officials say she hid her first-grade students in a closet, saving their lives. “In doing so, she put herself between the kids and the gunman’s bullets,” a police officer told the Wall Street Journal.

Carlee and Jillian Soto honored Vicki’s heroism on Twitter as they grieved for their beautiful sister.

Jillian tweeted this before she learned of her sister’s death on Friday.

Vicki Soto’s selfless heroism will not be forgotten.

#daughter#sister#friend#teacher#brave#hero#tough Vicki Soto. Police say when bullets were flying in, Vicki used her body as a shield for the children. I give teachers so much credit for what they do on a daily basis. If we didn't have awesome intelligent teachers like Vicki in this world we would be screwed. RIP Vicki. I'll pray for you.

I love you so much @icarlee23 ❤❤ rip to your sister Vicki, she's a hero and will never be forgotten.

A sign in Newtown, Conn., reads, “Hug a teacher today.”

Remember her name, indeed.

Twitchy extends our heartfelt prayers to the family of Vicki Soto and all of those affected by this tragedy.

When you are truly called to teach, you are much more than a simple teacher. You are a comforter, a counselor, a coach, a nurse, a mediator, a corrections officer, a mentor, a friend. You are a surrogate parent. And like any mama, you protect your cubs like a mama bear. You care about more than just knowledge. You care about the whole child. If you can’t do this, you shouldn’t be in the classroom.
