Rupert Murdoch calls for ban on automatic weapons; 'When will politicians find courage?'

Rupert Murdoch surprised many today by tweeting his support for a ban on automatic weapons. Murdoch’s stance isn’t wholly surprising, as he came out in favor of more strict gun control after the summer’s shooting spree in Aurora, Colo. Many, though, see Murdoch’s media properties as pro-gun violence, apparently.

Closer attention to the reports coming out of his media properties would have informed Murdoch that automatic weapons weren’t used in today’s mass shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Automatic weapons were restricted in 1934 and new automatic weapons were made illegal to manufacture since 1986. Try again Rupert.

    • Hiraghm

if it’s illegal to manufacture new automatic weapons, does that mean that our soldiers are fighting with obsolete weapons? Is the army phasing out fully auto weapons and going back to say, M1 Garands?

      • Sean Minturn

It’s illegal to make new automatic weapons for the civilian market in the US.

        • Andrew

          Exactly.

      • Sean Minturn

Auto weapons meant for the military/law enforcement are stamped “NOT FOR CIVILIAN SALE” on the receiver.

Admit or deny the U.S. Congress & many states have passed legislation which directly infringe upon the Peoples’ Right to Keep and Bear Arms. WE are responsible for protecting our children and each other from crazed lunatics. Disarming ourselves goes against Natures Laws, and our Natural Right of protection. Thats cowardice.

    Memo to Mr. Murdoch:

The United States is NOT Australia!

The United States did NOT start out as a Penal Colony for Old Blighty.

Oh, and And Automatic Weapons were restricted in 1934. So please know the nomenclature and history about the weaponry you rant about. Before you make an even more monumental jackass out of yourself.

    • I Am Breitbart

WELL SAID! Not a damn thing to add!

  • HARP2

With a little know how, most semi-auto guns can be turned into full automatic.

    Guess you are naive Rupert.

    • Hiraghm

My father told me of an experience he had in WWII. They were practicing with 1911 semi-auto pistols, when the sear pin broke on one. The gun turned fully auto and emptied itself on the spot.

      • http://www.theconservativevoices.com/ dmacleo

when the pin broke on my 1911 (military one as I was army) it stopped firing as the velocity of hammer wasn’t enough to trigger primer.
still though, they only run 5 rounds as 7 bound up the springs.

None of these people are placing the blame where it belongs….with the criminals who by the definition are law breakers therefore won’t care about all the legislation banning firearms. Knee-jerk reactions rarely do anything other than placate the people screaming the loudest which are usually the same people that are quickest to point at anyone but themselves when that same knee-jerk reaction is wrong or backfires.

    • LightSabre

      Well said.

  • Hearns-Jackson-Hagler-Jones

The fact that it was pistols from his mom make me feel helpless, I mean what are we suppose to do? I think Rupert is just hurt like a lot of us are and he is saying non sense.

  • blueniner

It didnt take long for all the ban the gun ghouls to come out of the woodwork.

  • TDS

I coulda sworn there was already a ban on civilians owning AUTOMATIC weapons in this country.

    • Hiraghm

      nope, just unConstitutional restrictions.

      • thetreyman

        totally agree.

        • http://profile.yahoo.com/KDX6MKQ3V5OZ3RG5FXUQIAJ5DU John

I agree as well, though I wouldn’t want one as you can’t really hit anything after the third round anyway. My first choice for a rifle would be a Springfield M1A. If I *really* needed heavy firepower (and I can’t see why unless it was to deal with a riot numbering in the thousands), I’d think a 1903 Gatling would make the most sense.

          • thetreyman

not really portable. if you want portable and firepower then the BAR chambered in the original 30-06 but i have seen it converted to a .308 for a cheaper ammo option. its not really a shoulder fire weapon though.

          • http://profile.yahoo.com/KDX6MKQ3V5OZ3RG5FXUQIAJ5DU John

LOL! A gatling weighs a ton and isn’t portable at all, but if I’m defending my house against one of those revolutions the Obama zealots keep threatening, all I’d really want is a swivel mount.

          • thetreyman

well, good luck with that. i hope you have a couple of horses to pull it around.

$200 for a tax stamp and a BATF anal exam and you too could own a pre 1986 full auto.

  • TocksNedlog

Perhaps after he wakes from his nap someone will inform Rupert of how stupid his tweet was.

  • Hiraghm

When will they ban people who don’t know wtf they’re talking about pontificating on gun issues?

  • Hiraghm

Think how much more peaceful Syria would be if civilians couldn’t get hold of automatic weapons. Think how much more peaceful Egypt and Libya would be.

Hey, Ruprect, would an Iraqi / Afghan war vet, who was trusted with high-power fully-automatic weaponry, also be banned from keeping and bearing fully auto weapons once he came home in your utopia?

  • Hiraghm

Imagine one teacher with an AK-47 or Mach 10 under his desk. Imagine one teacher with a bloody flinking cap-and-ball Colt under his desk. Was *nobody* in that school exercising his or her right to keep and bear?

    • thetreyman

federal law makes schools gun free zones. so nobody can figure out how this happened.

    • apocalyptico

Yes, and imagine your kids in the said teacher’s classroom. And imagine the said teacher thinking of using these guns every time your kids are having a tantrum….

  • mcarVA

Automatic guns are already banned moron.

    • thetreyman

not true. not in every state.

      • LibertyDwells

It’s federal law. No new ones since the late 80’s, sale of exiting ones strictly regulated and expensive as hell.

        • thetreyman

that is my point, though there are states where they are outright banned. it is not as hard to get one as people think though. $200 tax stamp and a BATF background check will legally get you a pre 1986 registered full auto. that is if you can afford the gun.

  • MrMeaner

You mean to tell me that the man who owns the most watched news network on this planet, doesn’t know that automatic weapons are already illegal?.

22 kids were stabbed at a school in China yesterday….which is a pretty common occurrence in China
    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/30/world/asia/30china.html?_r=0

Obviously, China should ban all sharp pointed things that can be used to pierce other things

    • thetreyman

not true. you can still get registered pre 1986 full autos and sears. it cost $200 and a BATF background check. the guns and sears are quite expensive though.

  • GTFOBigGovt

I’m for banning irresponsible parents, psychiatrists, and schools who all knew a large percentage of these mass murderers were dangerous before they did the murdering. Get started on THAT, Murdoch.

  • MZAZ

There is no reason we need automatic weapons. My ex use to hunt and he used either the 22 or 30.06 for deer. He didn’t need an automatic weapon. Taking away our rights will just lead to losing the right to bear arms. I thought it was only military and police that were exempt from being in possession. I defend our rights to bear arms.

    • thetreyman

      you would be wrong.

  • v1cious

Honest question: Why does a private citizen need an automatic weapon? Either you’re paranoid, or the worst hunter in the world.

    • LibertyDwells

It’s none of your business and there is no issue of “need” in a free country. BUT, automatic weapons are already thoroughly restricted and the manufacture of new ones has been banned for Citizens since the late 80’s. So I suppose you and people like you should also educate yourselves on the subject.

  • MadMagyar

Either the idiot doesn’t even know what kind of weapons were used, what the difference between an automatic and semiautomatic is, or both. No wonder his media empire is in trouble.
