Jumpin' Jackass? Mick Jagger tells Sandy relief benefit, 'If it rains in London, you've got to come help us'

Yes, yes he did. Here’s what Mick Jagger told the New York crowd last night at the 12-12-12 concert to benefit the Hurricane Sandy relief effort:

And the Rolling Stones’ Twitter account proudly tweeted the quote:

Man up and grow a pair, Sandy victims! Where’s your stiff upper lip? Just grab your bumbershoots, old chaps!

Was it just a joke from a silly old coot or an obnoxious insult? Either way, the Twitterverse wasn’t about to let this one slide. The backlash was immediate:

Any response from Jagger? Nah, he had a cricket match to watch.

Disgusted? Most definitely. Surprised? Not so much…

  • keepdreamingon

consider the source, and if it weren’t for AMERICANS he’d be sprechen sie deutsch!

  • LordLieutenant

Imbecile! When does it ever not rain in London and when was the last time the rain was so bad it had it’s own damned Twitter account?!

To ensure my American friends get their ‘satisfaction’ over the matter, I’m planning on hiding the mans botox and putting the ‘Jagger melting’ video on youtube…

    • Lady_Clare

If the moron actually thought it was just a bit of rain, then why was he hauling his carcass on stage? Imagine doing a benefit while “joking” about it just being a bit of rain. What an ultra maroon!

  • disqus_XEZm6xRHjV

Everyone needs to relax and take a deep breath. It was just an attempt at humor. Sheesh.

    • TocksNedlog

“Attempt” is a good way to describe it.

    • jtgun

Yes , the first sentence gives it context. Because they were a large group of elderly British musicians they might indeed need help getting out of the rain. Pretty funny actually.

I don’t know if it was actually…if you stick to certain areas of NYC you would never know anything major happened. I don’t think he would have seen SI or Coney Island or Rockaway.

I have a place in Brooklyn and came in before the storm…the next day before I put on the TV I really thought the thing was over hyped…but then when you see other areas it set in.

And not for nothing…but would it really kill us to have American bands at these things???

      Aerosmith…Van Halen…Guns N Roses…

Bruce and Bon Jovi suck…they don’t count…no better than kanye.

  • TocksNedlog

Example #3,824,985 of why singers should just STFU and sing.

    • Eric

Would you say the same if they leaned predominantly to the right?

      • TocksNedlog

Yes. I live in one of the states where Ted Nugent got into trouble for saying “If you can’t speak English, get out of the country.” Now, while I may support the declaration of EnglIsh as the official language of the U.S., and strongly encourage all legal immigrants to our country to learn as much of it as they can, what I want Ted Nugent to do is (to quote Frank Zappa) “Shut up and play yer guitar!”

    Jagger’s an ass. I’m a Beatles girl.

  • Grumpa Grumpus

    I’m an old man.

To me, a concert hall of bagpipe “drone pipe”s– all off-key sounds better than Jagger.

But, I guess I should admit, I do like a group called “Uriah Heep”… the “Wizards and Demons”, “Magician’s Birthday” albums (I understand the band’s “flavor” changed markedly before & after…). I also like a group called “Steeleye Span”.

Yeah. Parents do pickup musical taste from their children. Usually not as a main course, but more like side dishes or condiments to their main taste. I also like old style country, blue grass, and folk (not 60s) — but these aren’t my main tastes. Baroque, Classical, etc is what I love.

    • cfc1905

Uriah Heep….wow, that is old, old-school. Respect.

ps – Rush in the R-n-R Hall of Fame…the Mayans may be right!

  • Lord Foggybottom

I don’t think he’s far off, actually. We’ve turned into a nation of wimps and crybabies in which half the citizens can’t do anything for themselves.

  • Eric

The truth is, all of these musicians get paid a ridiculous amount of money and have reached an iconic level where they don’t need any kind of publicity at all. They did last nights show for free, raising a ton of money, to help one of the most cherished regions in the country in a very real time of need. I can let a little joke fail slide because there is no way he would donate his time to play a benefit show, only to make backhanded insults. It just doesn’t make sense.

  • stuckinIL4now

Drudge doesn’t call ’em the Strolling Bones for nuthin’!

  • http://www.theconservativevoices.com/ dmacleo

kind of sounded like a joking type remark to me.

  • YeahWeWill

British humor is a far different animal than US humor. As Brit by birth and US by choice, I am pretty sure that was his British showing. Bloody Brits :) After all, he did show up :) !

I’m sure he meant that rain = severe flooding in London. I didn’t think anything of it when he said it. No harm done.

  • http://www.facebook.com/brett.mcmicken Brett McMicken

leave him alone. you try to always be witty and on your game when you are 96 years old before you criticize.

  • Herman LaClair

un-bunch the panties, twitchy…it’s just a joke. there’s plenty of stuff to be outraged about, this isn’t one of them.

  • el_polacko

oh come on already ! what a perfect example this is of everybody just waiting for the chance to be ‘outraged’.
so he said ‘rain’ instead of ‘big storm’…burn the witch !! sheesh. everybody needs to just settle down.

  • Grumpa Grumpus

    Who is outraged?

Is preferring different musicians now outrage?

  • Jamie Huff

A lot of folks gave this clown relevance by buying so much of his cacophony they call music. I stopped being surprised at the stupidity the “craftsmen” in this industry spew a long time ago. If it struts like an idiot and talks like an idiot well it must be an idiot.

Maybe someone told him that Obama saved everyone?

  • J.N. Ashby

Considering that he’s British, it was probably just a sarcastic joke. Let it go.

  • misterp

This is not an insult! He wouldn’t be there if it was!!! He is filthy rich and a living legend! He just speaks that way! If he was standing in southern Asia post a Tsunami he would say something like this! But he would be there helping! ITS JAGGER! He meant no offense i believe

  • Juvenal451

He’s donating his time to hurricane relief, and you’re slagging him for an off-hand comment?

  • Guest

I love the Stones always have. I don’t think Mick meant any disrespect. People are emotional about it and rightly so but lighten up a little bit.

  • Roy Nelson

I can’t believe that people are being so petty. It was a great show!! Do you know how rare it is to get these guys together? And there doing it for gratis. OMG. He made a bad joke with his dry English humor. Get a life.

  • sunshine

    He’s a dumbass

Up to 24 comments already. And not a syllable of relevant or informative information in any.

You keep on showing up with your third rate infantile snark hoping to create a confrontation where you can claim that you are the aggrieved party. And you just come back for more.

Sounds like either deeply repressed Masochism. Or a case of insanity.

Described by Einstein as: “Doing the same thing over and over again. Yet expecting a different result.”

You may want to go back to HuffPo or Kos and their shallow end of the gene pool.
I’m sure your like minded, mouth breathing sock puppets miss you terribly.

do you have a clue whats going on?
maybe you should buy a clue.
the COMPLAINTS about what was said have nothing to do with left or right.
this site REPEATS what others say.
    f’ing idiot.
