Of course: Whole Foods now 'sexist' for trying to attract wives who cook for their husbands

Sigh. Yes, apparently Whole Foods is now sexist for suggesting that sometimes women make dinner for their husbands. The horror!

Hey, if asking Amb. Susan Rice to explain her post-Benghazi attack video-blaming is sexist, why not this?

Here’s the Facebook post from the Davis, California, Whole Foods that has oh-so-enlightened and empowered customers screeching about being flung back to the 1950s.

It’s half past seven, your man is asking what’s for dinner. You completely spaced. No worries, we will meet you in the frozen aisle.

Tsk, tsk, Whole Foods. Should’ve gone with “spouse,” or even better, “partner.” Because OMG SEXIST!!111! If Whole Foods was going for “retro” or simply reaching out to a subset of customers, people on Facebook didn’t see it that way. A sampling of the reaction to the post:

whole-foods-sexist

“Someone’s gonna get fired”? For the high crime of targeting female customers who dare to set themselves back 60 years by — gasp! — cooking for their families? We bet some of these women even tool around the kitchen barefoot. Or worse, pregnant! Heaven forfend!

Indeed.

  • irishgirl91

To be able to spot an ironic comment, one must have a sense of humor. Marge Simpson is as fictional as the FB post of someones “man” coming home for dinner. That doesn’t deny the reality that the majority of meals cooked in home, are cooked by women.

I wonder if they are, anymore. Seems to me every male I encounter is the family cook, housecleaner, laundress and whatever other role-reversal is PC today. And darn proud of it, God help us.

As the man in the house I actually love to cook, because that is time spent with the most beautiful woman in my world telling me every thing I’m doing wrong, right before she and my 3 boys sit down and eat everything in sight. It makes me feel good to be that big of a part in the family. But cleaning the kitchen Sux!

    • Hiraghm

I notice you said “man IN the house” and not “man OF the house”. Strange kind of masochist who likes being told he’s doing things wrong.

      • Scott

I dont consider myself OF the house although IN implies it also, and the way my wife tells me I’m wrong is WAY worth the implied insult. My rules/ways are followed out of respect and love for each other and our family. Not because im the head OF the household.

I worked in a test kitchen, and vowed if I ever got to design my own kitchen, I would include a power washer for clean up. Takes seconds, is fun, and everything is spotless. Of course, all surfaces had to be stainless or cement, but that would be a small price to pay.

Whole Foods can’t address ads to women who cook for their man? Spare me the outrage. If this is all Davis residents have to do they must be working for Obama or Soros. Nothing like paid outrage.

  • Penmar

I don’t know why ppl are getting so upset, most of us know it’s not that way any longer. Matter of fact, I happen to be banned from the kitchen because my cooking has been known to send people to the hospital. The only problem I have with the responses is the one guy who claimed he’d give his wife a black eye, am hoping he was joking. But it was in bad taste to joke about domestic violence.

    • 1CatEye

Lighten up. You knew it was a joke, so let it go. There are plenty of instances of real domestic violence you can get worked up over.

      • Penmar

No I won’t lighten up, I said I hope it was a joke and still it was done in bad taste even if it was a joke. Because sometimes it isn’t a joke, I watched my sister show signs of a beating on a regular basis for years until I was old enough to stand up to her husband. And yes I said I stood up to him, put myself physically between the two of them and dared him to come at me. I also was a member of a jury that decided they should convict a man for domestic violence in spite of evidence to the contrary by the primary witnesses just because ‘someone needs to pay’ for the young child that was in the home at the time of the incident, thank goodness I insisted they follow the law and the evidence. Lives get ruined that way. If the guy’s wife decides someday to become vindictive, he might be really be sorry he posted that, specially if she has a copy of it. In case you need more proof of why it’s not much of a joke:
        http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/citydesk/2012/12/12/rep-jim-morans-son-guilty-of-beating-up-his-girlfriend-in-columbia-heights/

        • $36544368

The ‘lighten up’ was in context of this story and these postings…do you honestly believe anyone on this site would actually condone domestic violence? I’ve been a victim of it. It’s not fun. No one here would disagree with me.

          • Penmar

I wasn’t talking about most of the people that post on this site, was specifically talking about the person on twitter who may or may not have made a joke about abusing their spouse. I said it was in bad taste and I stand by that assessment. I would say the same thing about someone ‘joking’ about child abuse, molesting children and/or animals. Some things just aren’t all that funny to me, like picturing a man beating up his wife. And I know the consensus is that as long as someone says they are joking that makes everything OK. Doesn’t mean I have to agree with it or stopping calling someone out because the joke was horrible. Now if you want to hear a good joke, ask my husband some time about the roast I ‘boiled’ for him, the one the dog buried in the backyard to get rid of it.

      • $36544368

Yeah…let me introduce you to my first husband.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong…but didn’t the word ‘husband’ come from the word ‘houseband’, with the meaning that a man ‘bound the household together’ with his strength, leadership, etc.? I swear I read that somewhere.

Unless you were around in the 50’s, you shouldn’t bash them. In my opinion they were great. Men worked hard, women worked hard, even kids worked hard. Just because women did the cooking doesn’t mean they were slaves to men. My mom was in charge of the household; Dad wasn’t good at budgets so he made her Chief Financial Officer. He still worked hard and brought home a paycheck every week. It was a happy family, in spite of what Women’s Lib told us. And most women were great cooks because they learned how. Now, not so much.

i live in the south (politically incorrect, i know) and i have yet to talk to another guy who thinks of a woman as his personal property. the happiest marriages i have seen are the ones in which BOTH the man and the woman treat each other with respect. note that i said both; i don’t mean the sitcom variety in which the wife is perfection personified while the husband is an idiot.

I knew I liked you for a reason, Brett….you know what we say down here when a feller’s dumb as a sack a’ hair…bless his heart…that’s how I feel about the vast majority of lib/progs….bless their li’l ol’ hearts….they couldn’t figure out how to get out of either end of an open-ended barrel…and here’s where Nannie would pat you on the head and say, “Go on out an’ play…I’ll call ya when supper’s ready…” Merry Christmas from the Tarheel State!!!

We had a few little variations…it was ‘bless your pea-pickin’ heart’ and ‘dumb as a sack a’nails’…oh, and my favorite…’you don’t have the sense God gave a billy goat’…lol

It’s funny the claim women cooking for men is sexist, but then turn around and complain that the culinary field is sexist because there aren’t enough female chefs. SMH

Crybabies and whiners… they act so smart, so intelligent, and it’s all over little, tiny crap that doesn’t matter. Be fair! Be fair! Don’t keep score!

It would be nice if we could relocate sensitive people like this to an isolated stretch of real estate with foam padded, sterile white walls where absolutely nothing offensive can reach their eyes or ears.

And then we nuke it from orbit.

  • 1CatEye

So what? My gosh, don’t dims have anything better to do than take offense at something, even if there is nothing offensive about it? Some wives do cook for their husbands. Some don’t. BFD. There is no right to go through life being “unoffended”. Get over it and yourself.

My man demands dinner LONG before 7:30pm!

Liberals are just jealous. I’m glad I was born in the 50’s.

Maybe it was the lady’s turn to make dinner in the ad? I’m a woman, um, I’m a mother and a wife. I make the dinner in our house. Not because I’d like to think myself as a sexy, modern sort of June Cleaver, but because I know I have a better sent of culinary skills in the kitchen. I know my strengths. I don’t look for outrage, where there really isn’t any to be had. I also, don’t fill the tank up with gas, fill the reservoir up with fluid for the windshield OR change the oil. Why? Because I’m a woman, and I don’t want to? No, my man does it because he LIKES to. He also doesn’t do the laundry how I like it to be done, and doesn’t buy the right sort of toilet paper. But I hate doing the bill pays online, or writing the checks, changing light bulbs that have burnt out, or shoveling the snow from the drive. Does that mean we’re a hideously unbalanced couple? No! Play to your respective strengths, and ditch looking for a reason to nit-pick. You might actually get something constructive done. Geez.

My mom is a homemaker while my dad works. She took care of five kids, cooked dinner every night, and makes the best bread I’ve ever tasted. She also: manages the finances (my dad calls her the Chancellor of the Exchequer), speaks three languages, works as a translator, wrote a historical novel, and has the last word in almost everything. Anyone who thinks that she’s unenlightened or enslaved just because she’s a homemaker seriously has another thing coming.

People are way too eager to find prejudice these days.

Isn’t implying that no women cook for their husbands some sort of “ism” too>

  • NCRelite

I actually cook for my wife, it just works out that way. I like it because I make the food I like to eat and it’s the only “chore” I really enjoy doing –she does everything else–laundry, cleaning, dishes, budgeting. If you ask me I have it pretty good!
