Piers Morgan: Bob Costas is ‘100 percent right’; Second Amendment was written with muskets in mind

Sportscaster Bob Costas might have stolen the spotlight by hijacking Sunday Night Football to deliver a sermon on the evils of guns, but CNN’s Piers Morgan wants you to know that he’s been consistently first to the scene of every high-profile gun crime, calling out for gun control. Morgan, of course, lends the perspective of a bemused non-citizen, enabling him to step back and observe as “Americans go crazy with indignation” when their Constitutional rights are questioned.

Fox’s Brit Hume tweeted that Costas had managed to “cite all known gun control clichés” during his brief rant, but Morgan was there to offer even more.

Epic, indeed.

Boy, we Americans do cling to outdated, musty old pieces of paper, don’t we? What were those crazy Founding Fathers thinking, anyway?

So, why is that cities with strict control laws seem to have the highest rates of gun crime?

Does Morgan understand guns themselves any better than he does the Second Amendment?

We’d said that Morgan was quick to jump on any high-profile gun fatality to push for gun control, but there were a couple of incidents that didn’t rate much of an outcry from CNN and the rest of the mainstream media.

    Where does an Englishman get off telling Americans what the 2nd amendment is about? We have the constitution because we were oppressed by England… you muppet 😛 Drink your tea and leave us our country..

    • Catchance

      The other thing that Auntie Piers forgot to mention is that the U.K. has one of the worst violent crimes rate of any civilized country, approximately 1.4 times higher than the U.S. The violent crime rate in the U.K. has gone up 44% since the final deadline of turning in their guns in 1998.

      • http://www.vatican.va/ Rulz

        They’ve had gun control measures even before that and it didn’t work then.

        It doesn’t help either that European police in general are outdated.

            Thats cause tons of fucks can’t drive. I honestly think Drivers License reform is a more pressing issue. Every year hundreds of thousands of idiots take to the roads everyday, they are more concerned with twitter or lighting their cig than the 2 ton truck that could crush them into pieces while they veer into the other lane head on.

      well, we all know a huge football player could never kill anyone with a knife, a club, a bat, or his bare hands. no weapons or deaths ever existed before guns were invented.

      Strangely enough, England possessed its own Bill of Rights, predating our own by more than a hundred years, and one of those enumerated rights was indeed the right to keep and bear arms (at least for Protestants — Catholics were still considered politically unreliable, cf. Guy Fawkes.) A lot of the others are also very familiar. The English Bill, in fact, inspired Virginia’s own Bill, and was that was the direct predecessor to the US one. Yes, the English and the rest of the British lost it somewhere along the way.

      • http://pennyrobinsonfanclub.net/ PennyRobinsonFanClub

        Here’s a link to the whole thing, I’ve included a few of its highlights:

        That the pretended power of suspending the laws or the execution of laws by regal authority without consent of Parliament is illegal;

        That it is the right of the subjects to petition the king, and all commitments and prosecutions for such petitioning are illegal;

        That the raising or keeping a standing army within the kingdom in time of peace, unless it be with consent of Parliament, is against law;

        That the subjects which are Protestants may have arms for their defence suitable to their conditions and as allowed by law;

        That election of members of Parliament ought to be free;

        That the freedom of speech and debates or proceedings in Parliament ought not to be impeached or questioned in any court or place out of Parliament;

        That excessive bail ought not to be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted;

        That jurors ought to be duly impanelled and returned, and jurors which pass upon men in trials for high treason ought to be freeholders;

        That all grants and promises of fines and forfeitures of particular persons before conviction are illegal and void;

        And that for redress of all grievances, and for the amending, strengthening and preserving of the laws, Parliaments ought to be held frequently.

      Exactly! How beyond arrogant is it for someone who is not even a citizen to make comments on our founding document . . . You know, the one created after kicking the British to the curb.

    • mountainaires

      Yeah, my first thought too. These Brits STILL think they rule us, I guess; maybe someone ought to inform Piers Morgan that WE WON THE WAR with GUNS and earned our LIBERTY THE OLD-FASHIONED WAY. Get over it. And, Bob: Go live in Britain where guns are outlawed. This is the USA where OUR rights to own guns shall “not be infringed.” Got it?

    • ToughStuff2012

      The same Englishman doesn’t seem to realize that while his country bans guns from most of its citizens, their violent crime rate is 4 times per Capita as the US. Sure they don’t talk about gun culture….they’re going off on “knife culture”.

    Bob and his girlfriend Piers need to back up off of their little pony. Maybe someone should victimize them and let them see what it is like, bet they would change real quick then.

    • mdtljt

      Maybe, but I’m guessing they’d simply think that the perp was the “victim” of his upbringing and the mean ol’ conservatives…and they’d beg the judge to get him out-patient psychiatric care on the taxpayers’ dime…

      • mountainaires

        Apparently, the perp had a long history of “domestic violence,” and the night before the homicide/suicide, had gotten drunk and cheated on his girlfriend, the mother of his child. He drove a CAR to the stadium where he killed himself. So, therefore: WE MUST BAN CHEATING, DOMESTIC partnerships, CARS and ALCOHOL. Oh, wait; we already tried that one, and it didn’t work.

  • peteee363

    hey piers wiretapping is also illegal, but that never stopped you. when will you be brought up on charges across the pond for your part in the newspaper’s wiretapping celebrities, and politicians?

  • SpinMeNot

    Somebody needs to explain to the limey that without a class 3 FFL you can’t buy an assault rifle in the US. An AR-15 is not an assault rifle, its a small-caliber hunting rifle wrapped up in some pretty plastic. It has no fire selector, you get one shot per pull of the trigger. Any .223 autoloading varmint rifle is just as capable of killing as many people as an AR-15, or AK or SKS knockoff that can be purchased at your nearest gunshop / outdoor sporting center.

    With regard to high power handguns … the limey needs to try doing a bit of hunting in someplace like Alaska … that large caliber handgun strapped to your chest can save your life when you happen into the path of a bear.

    They need to get over their delusions and realize the problem is not the gun, its the people that have them … and taking them away for law abiding citizens will have two outcomes — higher crime and more tyranny. Tyrants and criminal love unarmed citizens.

  • Bullman

    What an idiot, he should explain why the violent crime rate in “gun-free” Britain is the highest in Europe, and 4 times higher than that of the USA. And while he’s doing that, keep his nose out of our business and skeedaddle back across the Atlantic..

  • JustLikeAnimals

    Bob, Piers, and Co. have a reality problem. The 2010 census reports that “between 39% and 50% of US households having at least one gun (that’s
    about 43-55 million households). The estimates for the number of privately
    owned guns range from 190 million to 300 million. Removed those that skew the
    stats for their own purposes the best estimates are about 45% or 52 million of
    American households owning 260 million guns).”

    In light of that data, my question to the anti-gun crowd is, if possession of a gun naturally equates to its deadly use, why don’t we have 260-300 millions gun-related deaths every year? Could it be that the ownership of a gun doesn’t make a person a killer? No more than possession of a spoon means I’m going to get fat, or possession of an automobile means I’m going to die in a crash. Or, more along the lines of a sports metaphore you can wrap your tiny brain around: no more than possession of a football means I’m going to score a touchdown. Is there some other factor at play here? Oh, no!!!!! Could it be that “guns don’t kill people; people do”?????

    Bottom line is that dumbass, overpaid, lunatic football player was going to kill his girlfriend. If he didn’t have a gun, he’d have done it with a knife, an ice pick, an axe, a poison, an “anything” that would get the job done. Nicole Brown Simpson is no less dead because OJ (another dumbass, lunatic football player!) slit her throat with a knife.

    Get over yourselves and get off your sanctimonious, leftist soapbox.

    Your takeaway: 52 million households can’t be wrong. You are.

  • Just Another Guy

  • riddler1620

    As Archie Bunker once lamented….”would you be happier if instead of using a gun, people shoved you out of windows to kill you?” The point being, people who want to kill will find a way. What the handgun does is give a woman a chance to defend herself against a would be attacker from a distance, instead of using those classes she took in hand to hand defense.

  • Gallatin

    “The 2nd amendment was devised with muskets in mind, not high-powered handguns & assault rifles. Fact.”

    And your point might be? If I remember my history right a bunch of redcoat weanies marched from Boston to Lexington and Concord to take those muskets away from us—they got their butts kicked. Now if a military power foreign or domestic tries to take our high powered weaponry away from us I think history will repeat itself.

    It’s not the technology nor the fire power of the weaponry the founding fathers were concerned about they wanted to be sure the people had the means to defend themselves against a tyrannical government

  • TocksNedlog

    True fact: If Jovan Belcher had shot his girlfriend with a musket she would still be alive and relatively unhurt. I know this because Dr. Piers Morgan told me so.

      Also, the *right* of the *people* means the same thing in this amendment as in the others. Governments do not have rights; they have powers.

  • http://www.facebook.com/andrew.myers.3 Andrew Myers

    One Liberal argument against the 2nd Amendment is used by Piers Morgan above. “The Founders were talking about muskets, not semi-auto handguns and assault rifles”. Ignoring for now the fact that “assault rifles” has no factual meaning, and that “semi-auto” handguns fire as fast as a revolver (OK: revolvers fire 5-7 before needing a reload, and some semi-autos can have 15-20 rounds in a mag). As stated very well above, the Founders wanted the citizenry to be able to defend itself against its own Government. Specific arms were never mentioned, nor were there ever any prohibitions against specific arms. So, quite frankly, if I wanted to own a rocket launcher, there is nothing in the Constitution that specifically tells me that I cannot. Now, these same Liberals that claim that the Constitution is a “living breathing document” that should be allowed to “change with” and “mold to” more modern times, who were able to find the “emanations of the penumbra” in the Constitution that they say allows for us to wantonly slay unborn babies, tell us that only the very most strict interprestation of the second amendment is allowed, and their view is that it only allows for muskets (patently absurd), and only allows guns for Militias (historically and factually wrong, and recently kicked to the curb by the US Supreme Court). Piers and Bob Costas open their mouth, and prove how brain dead they are. Keep ’em coming!

  • DU VI

    • Cold War Grunt

      Correlative, not causal. The cultures are completely different. Switzerland has the highest rate (per capita) of gun ownership, and one of, if not the lowest gun crime rate.

      Guns don’t kill people, people with no respect for others kill people, with a gun or whatever else they can find handy. Guns are a tool, and like any tool, can be used for good or evil.

    Piers Morgan knows absolutely nothing about the effective and devastating power of a musket. …THe Brown Bess musket of the Revolutionary War used a 72 caliber ball..which is roughly 3/4 of an inch in diameter….sometimes this was accompanied by buck shot in what is called a buck and ball. Which means it could hit at least 3 or 4 people in a single shot….a 72 caliber ball was capable of removing a man’s arm at the shoulder or head….much more even devastating that the 9 mm round used by a number of hand guns today…. It also could be fired a good 3 to 4 times a minute well aimed which means at least more severely injured or dead…and it also could be used as a club or pike with bayonet attached…..making it triply deady as a Glock.
    The same goes for the Civil War era 1863 Springfield (58 caliber) and the 1858 Enfield Tower Musket 577 caliber. Each of these were extremely deadly and efficient pieces of weaponry.
