Twitter users slam ESPN for Jovan Belcher tribute

According to numerous Twitter users, ESPN ran a graphic last night or early this morning memorializing Jovan Belcher, the former NFL football player who murdered his girlfriend then committed suicide yesterday. Many Twitter users felt the tribute was inappropriate.

We wonder what, if anything, will be broadcast about Belcher at today’s Chiefs-Panthers game.

ESPN seems to like murderers, Simpson, Carruth, now Belcher. They also seem to like murderers who cop plea deals and rat out accomplices, kind of like Lewis.

I saw this referred to as a tragedy. A tragedy is a child being crushed by a tree limb that broke during a high wind. This was a murder with the killer taking the gutless way out. He could have just as easily driven into a wall at high speed and left that kid with a mother.

    • Alex

or he could have shot himself without shooting her?

  • Thought Criminal #1

A 25 year old punk kid that had the world at his feet takes the coward’s way out after brutally murdering his girlfriend and we’re supposed to feel sympathy for him? ESPN has gone right off the map.
I’m so disgusted with all the focus on the spoiled brat killer that had everything. He had youth, a woman, a home, a new baby, a dream career with dream money but that wasn’t enough for poor little Jovan.

ESPN proves the world of professional sports is more blood thirsty and dysfunctional than Washington, disgusted

    • TugboatPhil

Welllll….maybe not more than Washington. We don’t get to see all the DC scandals as they happen, on HDTV.

    Sick bastards!

Why does ESPN have a war on women? Societal misfits at ESPN

  • TocksNedlog

Athletics is ALL about “glory”. When OJ Simpson dies they will do the exact same thing — guaranteed.

    • walterc

Based on the amount of coverage we got on MJ the Pedophile, count on at least 3 days and a year end memorial when OJ dies.

  • Claude AndPam Parish

While they’re at it, why not give praise to O.J. Simpson, who got away with murdering his wife. ESPN is crap at spur of the moment commentary. Doesn’t anybody over there THINK first?

  • Cecil

Prayer for his family, his little girl, his girl friend and yes him. Our Lod will do the judging. I truly believe no sane person can do this. We just don’t have the knowledge to understand the brain.

  • Jonathan Widener

I watched “Countdown” this morning and they ran a graphic of both of them with their dates. Tom Jackson said something to the extent of how we need to remember that he is a murderer. He will go down in history with the likes of Rae Carruth and Chris Benoit. Sure, he may have been a good teammate on the Chiefs, but he did a terrible thing.

  • dianeo

And they were outraged at bountygate? Hypocrites!

  • Celiaj02

This is the REAL war on women.

  • lazypadawan

ESPN has sympathy for everyone, excluding conservatives and Christians who made a minor mistake in writing a headline.

Tom Jackson was the only true standup guy on ESPN’s pre-game show. Everybody else focused on how the team needed to play the game as a “distraction” from the event. Jackson called Belcher out as the murderer he was.

  • Rulz

Looks like the double standards for athletes continues. Maybe “conservatives” should keep this in mind the next time they want a new stadium with taxpayer money.

Otherwise, your outrage over something like this gets kinda blunted from where I sit.

  • irishgirl91

Did any ESPN female commentators and executives have any say in this? If they did and agreed to it, then maybe they need to evaluate their true feelings towards women. He killed his child’s mother and left his daughter an orphan. These women warranted a moment of silence, not their murderer.

this is any opportunity for suicide prevention outreach, NOT glorification of the suicide killer… That little baby will one day learn Dad killed mom.

  • DANEgerus

Jovan Belcher to win an ESPY for the shot of the week…

  • Alex

It’s a tragedy. Show some respect

Big news. Some mentally defective, drunk, thug, woman beating, nobody kills his girlfriend after spending a drunken night romping with another woman. It’s so cliche as to beg the question of why it’s even news. It happens a hundred times a day across this country. The tragedy is a 3-month old kid lost his mom.

The triumph is this mentally defective, drunk, thug, woman beating, nobody saved the public about a million dollars in investigations, prosecution, incarceration, and appeals by putting one in his own head, and the bonus is he took another mentally defective, drunk, thug, woman beating, nobody off the streets by shooting himself in the head.
