Kansas City Chief Jovan Belcher reportedly shot his girlfriend then committed suicide

A player for the Kansas City Chiefs reportedly shot and killed his girlfriend then committed suicide earlier this morning. The player was Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher,  according to numerous unconfirmed Twitter reports.

The suicide occurred at Arrowhead stadium, which is currently on lockdown.

Rolling updates:

Belcher’s Wikipedia page has already been updated with information about the alleged murder/suicide.

These Twitter users say Belcher recently had a baby:

* * *

Maybe this wasn’t a homicide. One Twitter user says Belcher’s girlfriend may survive the shooting:

* * *

A producer for a local radio station received an anonymous tip about Belcher shooting his mother earlier this morning. The producer believed the tip was a “creative hoax.”

All other reports seem to indicate that Belcher shot his girlfriend, not his mother.

* * *

Coaches and the Chiefs’ general manager reportedly witnessed the suicide:

(Note: In an earlier update, Twitchy misidentified a coach and the GM as Chiefs’ players.)

* * *

The Kansas City police chief has ID’d Belcher as the shooter?

* * *

The Chiefs are scheduled to play the Carolina Panthers tomorrow at Arrowhead Stadium. Will the game proceed?

* * *

Fans are saying RIP to Belcher:

Let’s not forget that this man reportedly shot (and may have killed) his girlfriend:

* * *

Unconfirmed, but this beautiful woman (Kasandra Michelle Perkins) appears to be Belcher’s girlfriend:

Kasandra Michelle Perkins

Perkins and Belcher had apparently set up a baby registry.

Some MSM outlets have yet to report the name of the shooter:

Meanwhile, “Jovan Belcher” is trending on Twitter. If people can’t get the name from the MSM, they will find it elsewhere.

* * *

Reporter Chuck Goudie of ABC7 in Chicago reports that police confirm Belcher “shot and killed” his girlfriend before taking his own life.

Police were reportedly on scene at Arrowhead when they heard the shot.

* * *

As of 1:30 p.m. ET, it looks like the Chiefs-Panthers game will go on.

* * *

A friend of the woman killed by Belcher told the Kansas City Star the couple argued after she returned home from Friday’s Trey Songz concert. The source was unaware of prior physical abuse.

Clark Hunt, chairman and CEO of the Kansas City Chiefs, released a statement this afternoon.

The entire Chiefs family is deeply saddened by today’s events, and our collective hearts are heavy with sympathy, thoughts and prayers for the families and friends affected by this unthinkable tragedy. We sincerely appreciate the expressions of sympathy and support we have received from so many in the Kansas City and NFL communities, and ask for continued prayers for the loved ones of those impacted.

Hours later, media are now beginning to report that Kasandra Perkins is the woman shot to death by Belcher.

Belcher’s fans have reportedly set up a makeshift memorial outside his childhood home.

    • Jim Cooper

      And left a baby behind!? Drugs Kill. Bet some “Harmless” pot in his system as well.

      • Bumr50

        You were doing so well until you blamed marijuana.

      • A Willful Boy

        I’m sure we will hear post-concussion syndrome is to blame…

  • Elaine

    It’s sad that many football players are so violent. This happens too often.

    • otrellus

      I don’t think they are more violent than the general population, Just more visible!!

  • http://twitter.com/BattleSwarmBlog BattleSwarm

    Crennel is the coach and and Pioli the GM, not players.

    • Jesse Malkin

      thank you. We apologize for the error, which we have noted above.

  • CombatDiver

    Suicide is the bravest thing a coward will ever do.

    • otrellus

      I HAVE never HEARD It better defined **

  • kate_middleton

    In front of Romeo Crennel? Whoa.
    Very sad. I hope the girlfriend survives.

    Never name your kid after a cheap 1970s cologne.

      …so Rich, I suppose Wind Song and Love’s Baby Soft are out too?!? :-)
      In all seriousness, though, my heartfelt prayers go out to all who are personally touched by this tragedy…

    This is disgusting.

  • Joe W.

    Steroids. Wanna bet??

    • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeBeq0i03bg Booker

      Something snapped. There is no way these folks can’t do a full toxicology test on this guy. When the dust settles, of course.

    • kate_middleton

      I doubt it. Some people are just psycho. Some people snap for no reason. No need to try to blame it on something. Just blame it on him. It’s his fault regardless.
      Very sad for the poor little girl.

      • Joe W.

        What makes you doubt it, Kate?? Have you never heard of professional athletes abusing steroids?? And no one is assigning “blame” to anything. I simply speculated on a very reasonable possibility of the catalyst for the tragedy.

        • kate_middleton

          Of course I’ve heard of some pro athletes doing steroids. But that’s been much more of a problem in the MLB than in the NFL. NFL just suspended someone for taking Adderall. Not saying they’re totally clean, but I think it’s a silly conclusion to jump to.
          I just think it’s silly when people (and the media does this a lot) seek to blame drugs/”roid rage”/concussions immediately when someone does something like this. Sadly, it just happens sometimes. People get into arguments and disturbed people can take it too far.
          It’s very sad, but domestic murder/suicides happen all over the country, with and without drugs having any influence.

    Kansas City Chiefs player Jovan Belcher, 25, reportedly shot his
    girlfriend on Saturday morning before killing himself at the team’s
    Arrowhead Stadium. The woman is in a critical condition and the area
    around stadium is currently on lock down.

  • MoxieLouise

    I’m from the KC area; watching local news they are reporting that the girlfriend has died. Thoughts and prayers to her family and especially that tiny baby.

    So much pain all around.

    I pray his girlfriend survives so that their child will not go through life with out her parents, and I can not say rest in peace to this man, he has a lot of explaining to do to the only man who can truly judge him on his actions…

  • milfordmarine

    Let us pray …

  • Eric Johnson

    My sympathies lie with the girlfriend, baby and parents but not with him. I wonder if the team will wear armbands or some other form of tribute to this murderer.

  • cgraham77

    Sad sad story. Poor little girl is now orphaned because of this selfish bastard. Prayers for the little baby girl.

  • Guest

    After reading many reports calling this a tragedy I have to disagree. This was a brutal crime, not a tragedy. As a lifelong Kansas City Chiefs fan I have to question the entire organization. Scott Pioli (GM), Romeo Crenell (Head Coach) and Gary Gibbs (defensive coordinator) what kind of organization are y’all running over at Arrowhead1? Did you not know Belcher was having problems? Pioli unlike Obama you cannot blame this on your predecessor, Carl Peterson knew what his players were up to. Pioli you have been out of touch since you arrived from Foxborough.

  • Janet

    The pictures of him and the baby show a man who was not ready to be a father. So sad. Prayers for that precious baby girl.

  • A Willful Boy

    And yet, somehow, Michael Vick is still more of a d…
