Mayor Cory Booker anxious for you to throw away your food, take #SNAPChallenge

Having confirmed his intent to live off of food stamps for a week in response to a Twitter challenge, Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker is inviting followers to join him. The challenge doesn’t begin until next Tuesday, but Booker is laying the prep work, doing what he can to praise the SNAP program as essential while simultaneously pointing out how woefully inadequate it is — funny how so many government entitlement programs fit that description.

If you’d like to participate, here are the rules as they stand now, in handy video form.

Take special note of the arbitrary conditions. Many on food stamps don’t have a car, so don’t drive to the store. Many on food stamps don’t have friends or family, so don’t accept food from mom.

Although many praise the challenge for raising awareness, one follower wants people to be aware of the original purpose of the SNAP program.

I’m curious how a mayor gets $30 for this program/giveaway? Maybe Newark doesn’t pay the mayor well?

    • RogueRose

I’m guessing as a single able bodied adult his max benefit was $30/wk back in 2011… but the benefit for 2012 is $50/wk. (over 50% increase in 1 year) so the tweet he put out, as usual when dealing with the left, is untrue.

Let’s count the untruths/half truths in his one tweet…
      1) Uses 2011 benefit amount… newsflash, it’s 2012.
      2) Says the NJ benefit is $30/mo, but it’s a federal program so the benefit is the same nationwide.
      3) Fails to mention that the S in SNAP is for Supplemental, it’s NOT supposed to be the sole source of income for food. People eligible for SNAP are also eligible for rent assistance, healthcare, and… cash assistance (to be used for buying food)
(and.. he’s not actually qualifying for the program, just eating for the week as if that’s all the $$$ he has to spend for food)

      • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

And soon to be 2013, so I’m sure with the 1.6trillion new taxes that GOP will cave for, that benefit will increase.

Oh, and do you mind if I remind him what the S stands for?

      • Maria

Wow, $50 a week per person. That is a lot of food you can buy.

      • TwitWit

this whole challenge was a joke. he used me, a known to him, conservative, to shine a spotlight on something he already planned to do.
I started eating my food stamp equivalent meals yesterday. i spent $27. picked the most palatable menu i could come up with.. not bad at all.

taxpayers provide the gov. with money to make sure people don’t starve.. it is not govs to tell them what to eat nutritiously, its there job to tell them what they can’t buy. you know, the way it used to be. if people receive free money to feed their family, then thats what they should do. if their kids are coming to school hungry, perhaps its time to address the REAL problem.. the parents.

My family is on food stamps. We get around 800 epr month for a family of five. So, in the vicinity fo 40 dollars per person, per week. We do just fine.
On a side note, Ir ecently took a seasonal job. I make around 875 before taxes. SInce the pay periods span tow different months we lost 400 per month, for thsoe months, from our stamps.
Take out transportation costs and taxes and we are worse off by working than by being on food stamps.
There is a serious issue with that. I would love to get off of food stamps. I hate beign on them….We try to live within our means. We have one vehicle. We tried to stay home with our kids until they were all in school.
Unless I can find a 10 dollar an hour job, locally, in a situation where I don’t have to by a second car….we are better off on stamps….that’s wrong..
WE do ok with teh stamp amount we get…in fact, ti’s to high. It drops any incentive some people have to work…

  • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

What stupid tweets…. hello, morons… it’s $30 PER PERSON. Which would be for a FAMILY OF FOUR. Which, if math serves, and it rarely does for liberals, would be ONE HUNDRED TWENTY DOLLARS a week. Can’t eat healthy on $120 per week? I suggest a lap band or some other gastrointestinal surgery.

Oh, and my ‘monthly benefit’ this month? My boot up Booker’s ass.

    • dkhilly

Yep, I feed my family of 4 on usually less than that.

    • Maria

I could eat well on $30 a week by myself!

  • medicinewomantwo

Sorry Booker, I planned for these times and I prefer my self esteem intact.

  • Lisa Dean

Even though my family isn’t on food stamps, I do have a few friends that do receive them. Two are families of four (who’s Dad’s are union members out of work), one is a family of three and the last one is a family of five (who’s Dad was employed under the Davis Bacon act so no union representation there). They’ve had to deplete their savings and 401k before they qualified for food stamps because you can’t have any assets. I would have been more impressed if Mayor Booker had done this in November and used the “food stamp” money to feed his family for Thanksgiving. There’s not always a free turkey headed your way to supplement your Thanksgiving dinner and friends or family may not always invite you over to their house for the bountiful celebration either.

  • stuckinIL4now

One week doesn’t cut it. I’d like to see him try to eat on $30 week for an entire month. I really don’t get what he’s trying to prove, either, but somebody please tell Booker you can’t buy toilet paper with SNAP.

    • Maria

I guess they make SNAP the way it is so people will be deterred from staying on it too long and will seek their own income.

  • Mike Wilcox

i guess that “Weeping Willow” Booker, is running for NJ GOV has NOTHING to do with this, Right ? DUH it’s the new way to buy Votes from the Dependent Class.

So much for elevating his people, right ?

  • Kate

Eating healthy will be a challenge? I thought produce was less expensive than most packaged food?

What a shameless ploy to push for more government handouts. Doesn’t anyone realize you aren’t supposed to live off of food stamps (at least not long-term)?!? They’re supposed to serve as a temporary supplement while families try to get back on their feet.

  • TWG2A

Ridiculous. Welfare is not supposed to be a way of life. When people are hungry, they WILL work for their food. Stop babying the lay and give the something to work for

    • TwitWit

That’s what i thought as well, but, judging from the email i am receiving, welfare is absolutely seen as an acceptable way of life.

  • WorldDowntown

    How about a #dignitychallenge

  • louisiana_mom

A pathetic stunt by the Left… If those on food stamps have it so hard, they should get jobs so they can spend more on food… just an extreme thought.

    • Maria

It’s easier just to stay on food stamps and complain.

      • J.Milliscone

It’s easier to make bigoted comments than show compassion to the meek and other Americans.

        • Maria

I don’t make any bigoted comments. It’s all in your head. :-) I just speak the truth. See: Obamaphone Lady for more.

          • J.Milliscone

Actually one definition of Bigoted is making judgments of whole groups based on limited information.

You just did it again so I must assume you’re unaware of the words meaning. But by all means check out a dictionary or a book yourself. :)

    • BeeKaaay

Get a job? In this economy? Someone hasn’t been paying attention. The Obamarxist regime is making sure jobs are lost so people are forced to be on food stamps.

” in response to a Twitter challenge,” — No Twitchy. The mayor challenged ME!

  • justlittlolme

    ‘SNAP challenge’? WTH!
These idiots try to make political points by behaving like one of the ‘unwashed masses’… if were some kind of GAME!
