Eh? Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper tweets chinchilla in Pilgrim hat

Tired of reading the boring talking points from President Obama’s twitter account? Well then, check out conservative Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Twitter feed! There, you’ll see what happens when heads of government are allowed to tweet for themselves.

Today, Harper treated us to a picture of his pet chinchilla, Charlie, “getting into the Thanksgiving spirit.”

However, we should point out that Canadian Thanksgiving is in October, and even then they don’t use Pilgrim imagery. Hence, Canadian tweeters were a bit puzzled by the sudden appearance of the fuzzy creature celebrating American Thanksgiving a week late.

Still, plenty of people thought exactly what we thought here at Twitchy … “CHINCHILLA IN A HAT! SQUEEEEEE!”

I’m sorry for being squirreled but hey!! it’s a chinchilla in a hat!! how freakin’ cute is that, huh!?

  • Soopermexican

Obviously his chinchilla is an American ex-pat. And not very punctual.

Sorry I missed your reply. Mine – above – echoes yours.

Whether one celebrates Thanksgiving in October or November (or, as the Koreans do, in either late September or October), we must remember what unites us all as the human race: chinchillas in hats.

  • TugboatPhil

My dad raised Chinchillas in the 70s. It was supposed to be a cash enterprise, raising the varmints for pelts. Long story short, he died before he ever got anything out of his investment.

The reason I mentioned all that, Chinchillas are some of the most vicious, crap-emitting, sneaky rodents on earth. Very soft, but vile critters!!

    • Maria

Aw, but I love them. They remind me of myself. Cute on the outside, vicious when provoked (or even not, sometimes), and sneaky.

    • JesLHW

I have three chinchillas but they aren’t really vicious. One is perpetually grumpy, though. I can’t argue the “crap-emitting” part, because…yeah. They produce poo like nothing else!

      • TugboatPhil

Well in their defense, they were living in cages and waiting to become coats. Dad built all his own cages and made pumice dust baths out of old gallon metal cans. He was a hunter and had no problem with cleaning deer and squirrels, but I don’t think he had it in him to dispatch the critters.

It also might have been because he was getting sick and we didn’t know it. He died shortly thereafter and a friend of his bought the setup from mom. I recall having to wear welding gloves to take them out of the cage to give them medicine or check them.

I just recently learned that people keep them as pets and it surprised me very much. We have an ancient Chihuahua/Chupacabra mix and he’s got enough biting capability to keep me on my toes.

        • JesLHW

Sorry to hear about your dad. It made me smile to think of him not having the heart to kill a chinchilla, though. They can definitely be little jerks but they are so cute!

Chinchillas can be very territorial in their cages, especially if they haven’t been socialized. The females are the worst about it. They’re larger and more aggressive than the males (my females weigh about twice as much as my male!)

Chihuahua/chupacabra, haha! Is that him in your pic? Very cute! I wish my husband liked dogs.

  • JettieG

Chinchilla coats are coming back in style. Meh, Harper can do whatever. He supports the military and is good for the economy — he visits countries like India and China that will boost Canada’s productivity. Unlike the leader to the south.

      The world needs more Canada

      • JettieG

Careful what you wish for, Susan! We also have some bizarre laws, including socialised healthcare (you pay and wait months for treatment), insane immigration (hey, bring your elderly folks and after 7 years of never contributing taxes, they get social security and free healthcare), longer jail terms for racial slurs viz real crimes, and taxes, taxes, taxes to pay all those govt union workers. Oh, maybe you live here, too. :)

Heh, His twitter feed is classic. Check his reponse to Bieber wearing overalls to receive the Jubilee medal.

I want more Charlie in more hats.

Oh I just squee’d all over when I saw that chinchilla. They are so adorable!

  • Lady 12

Oh he’s so cute… Don’t the Obama’s have a bulldog or something? More evidence that they have no taste.

Hello! Has no one considered the very real possibility that Charlie is an American? If so, would he not be celebrating the U.S. Thanksgiving, even if he is living with Canada’s PM?

There are rumors that Charlie’s festive spirit comes in a bottle, and – to maintain* that spirit – he celebrates every festive day in Canada and the U.S., according to both the Gregorian and Julian calendars.

Stephen Harper has opened his home – the PM’s residence – to animals** awaiting adoption at Ottawa’s animal shelter. That fact may have contributed to Charlie’s drinking.

    (* and justify maintaining)

    (** mostly cats, I believe)

  • JesLHW

He is SO cute! I love his freckly ears. I had no idea the PM of Canada had a pet chinchilla.

I like the theory of Charlie being a very tardy American chinchilla.
