In final count, Mia Love falls short of House seat by only 768 votes

Saratoga Springs Mayor Mia Love conceded defeat in the race for Utah’s 4th district House seat in what many described at the time as a “squeaker” of a race, with initial reports estimating she lost the election by fewer than 3,000 votes out of a quarter-million. A final tally, though, which takes into account around 72,000 absentee and provisional ballots which have been processed since Election Day, shows that Love lost by only 768 votes.

Rep. Allen West only this morning conceded defeat in Florida after several recounts failed to make up the difference that would trigger a mandatory recount. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that a 488-vote difference would have allowed Love to request a recount.

News of the closeness of the race makes the loss even tougher for supporters, some of whom blame a siphoning of votes by Libertarian candidate Jim Vein.

Not so fast, say others.

We’re hoping to see more of Mia Love outside of Utah, and we’re not alone.

  • Jerry J Brown

most libertarians wouldn’t vote for the dem or repub. The fact they siphoned votes is not an accurate assumption. If there was no libertarian candidate, they prob would’ve stayed home

Then you give your principles to those that don’t share even a remote shred of them. Gives true meaning to cutting off one’s nose to spite their face.

  • nc

Yet another heartbreak. But we have not seen the last of this gifted and unforgettable young woman.

  • George Washington Mclintock

“A bit a naive.” No, the Libertarians don’t get to weasel their way out of blame. Yeah, they were far from the only reason that we lost, but their short-sightedness cost Mia Love’s race and whole lot more. Yes, they did. You threw your vote away on a 3rd party that wasn’t winning squat. So instead of the party that shares 90 percent of their principles getting elected,, the party that opposes all your most cherished principles got elected. It’s absolutely that simple. You don’t like Todd Akin? Fine, do you like Patrick Leahy’s warrantless email surveillance more? Because that is what not voting Republican is going to get you for at least two years. We could use the Libertarians in ’14 and 16, so let’s hope all of you remember which party wants the govt out of our lives.

This rising star has not yet begun to shine. And lets not blame our friends in the Libertarian party for Mia’s loss, they weren’t the ones who voted to elect the Democrat. :)

  • Garth Haycock

This is a tough loss to deal with. Mia is a fantastic person and would have better represented Utah’s 4th Congressional District than Matheson will. Unfortunately, not enough of us who live in the 4th District were able to see the big picture. Matheson really is a good man, but the fact that sending a Democrat back to DC rather than gain another seat for the GOP in the fight against Obama’s dismantling of the country was lost on those who voted for Jim Vein.

It was my pleasure to have spent so much time working with her and the other volunteers for her campaign and if she chooses to make another run in ’14, I’ll be the first to volunteer to help her get elected.

    • conservativechick

I bet ANYTHING she actually WON the legal votes. :)

      • Garth Haycock

Utah is actually really good about not allowing voter fraud. Of course, that’s because the state is dominated by conservatives.

  • lonestar

She is just getting started. I wonder if they will count the absentee ballots in the FL-18. Actually, I don’t wonder. We know they wont.

I’m going to pretend you didn’t just post this idiotic statement. No, I can’t you’re an imbecile. First, the democratic party is the party of the people – not socialists, communists or marxists like some of you teabilly nincompoops believe. Secondly, tell me. How many blacks, hispanics, hindus, and muslims are holding office as republicans? C’mon… I’ll give you minute….. Didn’t think so. Next time you have a thought, ignore it.

      • digitalPimple

Majority of Hispanics in high leadership roles are in the GOP. Gop does not go around insulting and dividing people into classes, race or gender. Not who they are.

You can’t expect a Democrat Zombie like Michael to absorb facts, it’s just not possible.

        • Pater Tempus

“Gop does not go around insulting and dividing people into classes, race or gender.”
Really? Apparently, Mitt Romney missed that memo…..just ask Bobby Jindal.

          • http://profile.yahoo.com/44F4AB4VSCTOCHBMBG4ZWWD5OU Laurel

Oh so now you like Bobby Jindal and don’t have a racial slur for him? So tell me what race based or gender based or communist based caucus in congress the Republicans have? You are a dolt.

          • Pater Tempus

Rather than engaging in mindless namecalling, perhaps you should seek to improve your reading comprehension skills. I never said I liked Bobby Jindal, but I also never had a racial slur for him. Racism is antithetical to the concepts of liberalism…just so you know. I merely pointed out that Jindal took Romney to task for his insulting and divisive comments regarding his fellow Americans. So did Newt Gingrich, by the way.

But by way of addressing your silly little question, Allen West, R-FL is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus…..or at least he was until he finally admitted he lost his re-election bid. And, in the interest of keeping this conversation topical, I do believe it was Mia Love herself who expressed an interest in joining the CBC…..that is, if she had won.

          • http://profile.yahoo.com/44F4AB4VSCTOCHBMBG4ZWWD5OU Laurel

No racism isn’t antithetical to liberalism since liberals are the biggest racists on the planet. You ‘merely’ pointed out Jindal and Gingrich but any other time they would slam you for your ignorance. As to slurs, liberals have had plenty of them in the past for Jindal and anyone else who dare to disagree. Since you so proudly proclaim yourself a liberal you are going to get tarred with the same broad racist brush you so readily use on others. YOU ARE A LIBERAL THAT MAKES YOU A RACIST. And the name calling wasn’t mindless..it was a very appropriate descriptive label. Yes you are a racist and a dolt. Oh just because Jindal or Gingrich say something it doesn’t make it so. Add idiot to your list of descriptions.

          • Pater Tempus

“YOU ARE A LIBERAL THAT MAKES YOU A RACIST.”

How thick is your skull anyway? Count your chromosomes and learn:

            Racism.

            Is.

            Antithetical.

            The.

            Concepts.

            Of.

You are correct. I misspoke. You are not a liberal, not in the classical sense anyway. You are a progressive that likes to use race and division of any sort or type as a means to get what you want. Your skull apparently isn’t thick enough because the wind is whistling through it and your skin is thin as well…but that goes with being a progressive. As is apparent to anyone that deals with Progressives, and anyone that has read your posts, you are angry. Progs can only accomplish something if they get their righteous on…even if it is invented. Well it sure didn’t work too well for Mitt Romney, did it? I’ll be sure to keep your advice in mind should I ever decide to run for president. In the meantime, as I informed another blogger a while back, while I may be a liberal, I tend to behave like a conservative in forums such as these.

You know…rude, ill-mannered, condescending, arrogant, etc. You know…when in Assholistan, do as the Assholes do, and all that rot.

          • Garth Haycock

Moriah’s post was sarcasm, it meant that if you’re Conservative you automatically are considered white no matter what race you really are. Next time read deeper into a post before you state such asinine assumptions. I vote for whoever agrees with my ideology no matter what race or gender. You truly are dense.

          • http://moriahjovan.com/talesofdunham Moriah Jovan

The Klan is a Southern Democrat organization. See: WV-D Senator Robert Byrd, who also filibustered in opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which was overwhelmingly opposed by Democrats.

You might want to start researching party history and see who’s stayed which course since before the Civil War.

          • Pater Tempus

            Moriah Jovan:

Just so you can say you’ve learned something today, the political parties have switched ideologies since the Civil War. Neither of us were around in the mid 19th century and as such, whatever was going on then is not of great interest to me, but in the early 21st century, the party of Abe Lincoln has become the party of David Duke, while the party of “rum, Romanism and rebellion” has become the party of Barack Obama. But you’re half right…..the states of the old Confederacy remain a chancre on the buttocks of Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty. It’s just now they fester under the banner of the Good Ol’ boys Party.

Oh, and FYI, Robert Byrd is dead, and it’s been nearly 50 years since the Civil Rights Act was voted upon. If you’ve got to go back 50 to 150 years to try and discredit the Democratic party, good luck with that…..not only do 90+% of blacks vote Democrat, but 80+% of Asians and 70+% of Hispanics and Jews. You better get to work….you’ve got a lot of Americans calling BS on you.

        • Pater Tempus

          “Ideology trumps race.”
Bingo! Yahtzee! Ideology does indeed trump race. You know it. I know it….and if Darwin was right, maybe the teabaggers will have evolved enough to know in about 30,000 years. :-)

          • http://moriahjovan.com/talesofdunham Moriah Jovan

Yes. It does. On our side of the aisle.

We have Condoleezza Rice and Mia Love, Marco Rubio, Allen West, and Herman Cain who espouse capitalism and love of country, who are doers, fighters, and producers, who want to lift people up out of poverty by showing them the way to independence and determiners of their own fate.

You have a party full of people who want to enslave blacks and Hispanics while calling it compassion–because of their race.

Tell me. Why do the women in Obama’s White House consistently make 18% less than the men? Why do the Democratic women in the Senate consistently vote for policies that make minorities and women poorer? Why was Planned Parenthood founded? (Hint: black genocide: http://www.blackgenocide.org/sanger.html)

Ideology. The Democrat party’s ideology is founded upon the concept that the white race is superior to any other.

The conservative/libertarian movement’s ideology transcends race to that which Martin Luther King so succinctly stated:

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

Only the Democrat party would celebrate a black woman losing a congressional seat to a white man.

          • Pater Tempus

“Only the Democrat party would celebrate a black woman losing a congressional seat to a white man.”

Ummm….wasn’t the Republican party celebrating a black man losing the White House to a White man on Election Day? Oh, wait…..Mr. “shared Anglo-Saxon heritage” got his pale patrician posterior whipped red right through his magic underroos. Sorry about that, old boy….

By the way, in case English is a second language for you, let me point out that in English, one doesn’t modify a noun(party)with another noun(Democrat), but rather an adjective(Democratic)is used. You’re welcome.

We on the left celebrate the victories of those who share our ideology….no matter what they look like. You know….that whole content of character vs. color of skin thingy? Your side, by contrast, is currently in the midst of trying to find the best way of pandering to women and minorities so that they’ll give more of their votes to you. But, in the interest of addressing your assertions.

            1. Show me anywhere it is written that Democratic party ideology is dedicated to the premise of white supremacy. I defy you.

            2. White House salaries are determined by Congress….which has been in Republican hands for 14 of the last 18 years. So apparently, the disparity in pay is just another front on the GOP

            3. You have Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Ileanna Ros-Lehtinen and Susana Martinez. Condoleeza Rice was an appointee not an elected official, Mia Love and Allen West are loser has-beens while Herman Cain is a never-was. An “entrepreneurial charlatan” according to George Will. Guess I know your roster better than you, eh? General Powell could’ve been your Barack Obama back in 1996….if you people hadn’t disrespected him.

            4. Planned Parenthood Federation of America was founded as the American Birth Control League in 1921 for the purpose of offering women of all socioeconomic classes, but primarily poor women, access to birth control and abortions if necessary. As for Margaret Sanger herself, here are two quotes of hers:

            • “What hangs over the South is that the Negro has been in servitude. The white southerner is slow to forget this. His attitude is the archaic in this age. Supremacist thinking belongs in the museum.”

            • “The big answer, as I see it, is the education of the white man. The white man is the problem. It is the same as with the Nazis. We must change the white attitudes. That is where it lies.”
            – Margaret Higgins Sanger Slee

While it was true that she gave a lecture on birth control before the women’s auxiliary of the KKK in 1926(a time in which the Klan was a far more influential and respected organization that it is today, despite its terrorist based origins), she pronounced the experience “weird”. Generally, the use of that word is in a negative context. Considering her quotes above perhaps the “unfit” and “undesirable” Sanger wanted to reduce in number were the grandparents and great-grandparents of today’s teabaggers. 😉

Oh, one last thing…..Dr. W.E.B. DuBois, a founding member of the NAACP and Adam Clayton Powell Sr. & Jr. respectively ministers of Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York,(the largest Protestant congregation in the United States at 10,000 members, it was a megachurch long before the term was coined. Powell Junior was also Congressman from NY)all black men, by the way, considered Sanger a friend and political ally.

Perhaps you should reference an unbiased news source next time rather than one allied with the anti-choice movement.

        • https://twitter.com/AlessaRosewater Maria

Oh you whine and cry when someone supposedly calls you a name, yet you call a whole party of people names. What are you like 8? (To quote you.) Irony in its finest. Next time you read a post, comprehend it before you reply, it will make you look less of an ignoramus.

Moriah’s post was sarcasm as those outside of the Republican Party, namely the Democrats, believe one forfeits their ethnicity upon joining the Conservatives. That means no matter what race a person is, they are considered white by skewed outsiders. That is what her post meant. By the way, the KKK is the Democratic Party’s baby and always will be since they are socially backwards and lacking in intelligence for the most part (there’s always an exception to every rule). I think we Conservatives are a little bit more evolved than sheep (Liberals). 😉

          • Pater Tempus

“yet you call a whole party of people names”

Who did I call what name? Are you referring to my use of the term teabaggers? As I told another blogger a few days ago, how am I supposed to refer to the jackoffs who staple teabags to their hats? Other than jackoffs who staple teabags to their hats, of course….but that’s so much unnecessary typing when “teabagger” will do just fine….

A Small town mayor, who as soon as she won the state convention to run against Jim Matheson (who’s family is legendary in the state of Utah) as opposed to coming out swinging against his message and votes, she 1) took marching orders, from the NRCC (Who is 0-3 when they help to run a campaign in Utah) and decided to go negative from day now, which is like kicking a Rottweiler especially when he has 5x the money in the Bank.

When ever Mrs. Love was pressed for details on her plans and policies, she gave standard GOP Talking Points, and never any specifics. She came off as defensive and unprepared in their debates. we

I am sure we haven’t seen the last of her, but hopefully she sees how Utah politics work, and that negativity doesn’t work the same way. I also hope the NRCC, and the Utah GOP who just got punked at their little redistricting 2010 tom foolery learned a lesson.

Jim Vein actually ended up with 6,439 votes (both Vein and Love gained votes in the absentee ballots) – over eight times the margin of Mia Love’s defeat and far and away the largest ratio of votes garnered to margin of Republican defeat for any libertarian spoiler (others at best doubled that margin). That make the sting even worse.

Congratulations to the Democratic Parties in Utah and Florida-they succeeded in defeating two well-qualified minority candidates-one being female-with two white guys. The party of peace, love, and diversity…

I’m still in shock over Mia Love and Allen West’s losses. The only reason I can think of is voter fraud as the people of their districts can’t really be that foolish.
