Out of business avalanche: Small biz owners report ‘closing up shop,’ and ‘can’t afford to stay in business’

As Twitchy has reported, the layoff bomb has detonated. Small business owners relayed their heartbreak over having to lay off employees, due to the crushing finanical burden of Obamacare. Large businesses are contemplating cutting workers’ hours and hiring freezes. Small businesses are doing the same.

And they are being attacked for it. Threats of boycotts have been spewed. Because, you know, that totally helps the employees whose hours keep being cut due to business-crushing Obama policies. Other businesses have been attacked as racist or as un-American. For struggling to remain in business.

Now, small business owners on Twitter, and their loved ones, report further devastation. Countless small businesses are now forced to close their doors. Here are just a few of the heartbreaking stories.

The heartbreak is palpable. The devastation is overwhelming. People have worked so hard all their lives in order to build businesses and employ others. And now it’s gone. The sad reality is that President Obama and his policies have destroyed these small businesses.

The Left would demonize that company, too. They clearly value and love their employees. Heartbreaking. And the heartache will just keep coming.

Are you listening, “leaders?” We know President Obama isn’t. Talk to the hand, business owners. You didn’t “build that” anyway.

When Clinton raised taxes it was at the end of a successful war in Iraq that drove Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait. Cutting military programs did not lead to massive layoffs at Boeing because they were working on the 777, but did lead to the merger of Douglas/Boeing and as a result job cuts.

In addition to the above, the computer revolution was just getting a good foothold in the marketplace, and home computers started to become affordable. The internet boom was just getting started. There is no Computer/internet boom in our future.

Obama is determined to turn our energy into “green ONLY” and allow the UN to tax us for Climate change and take our guns, Global governance is the program, and if people don’t wake up they are going find their freedoms gone. PERIOD.

      • West_Coast

        EXACTLY…

Clinton inherited the greatest economic recovery this country has ever seen. The left will never admit that. If they did, it would only anchor the credibility of deep rooted conservative values and principals that make this country the most exceptional nation in human history.

The left’s sole purpose of existence is to separate this country from its core principals…God, family, freedom, liberty…The hard core Left can’t destroy us if we’re united (like under Reagan 49-50 states). Once they divide us, like Obama, they drag the proverbial dollar through the trailer park, (welfare, social justice, environmental causes) organize the useful idiots, rally them around their causes, then Big Daddy (The UN and others) swoops in, crushes the idiots and the rest of us.

We cannot allow them to do this. Lenin said: “A well organized minority is better than a disorganized majority”.

      • http://twitter.com/DrJDennis Jeannine Dennis

I agree! I’m already being taxed two ways on my electric bill for green energy usage and carbon credits!

    • GaryTheBrave

      To Johnny Foreigner,

The reasons these business owners are closing shop now is that many of the taxes for Obamacare kick in on January 1, 2013. That’s just a month and a half away.

      • http://twitter.com/SandraHopes2 Sandra Hopes

That is one reason, here is another. Most of us who own businesses are either middle aged (not many kids do it outside of IT), or in our 50’s. Why on earth in order to give jobs to those who voted for this would we risk everything we worked for all our lives? If we close shop now, we can do it with what we have left, rather than trying to help the kids who are against us anyway get a leg up. We can retire early, putter around the Golf Course like the president and stop worrying about how we are going to make the next payroll. Most of us will be fine. Now my question is this, will you young-uns that think a college degree is the only way to make a living still be able to make it? If you want socialism so bad you are willing to destroy the best country on the planet, so be it, you pay for it I am pulling my money out now before I have to pay higher taxes on it. Good luck kids.

In what world did we think we could compete against the purchasing of so many votes. Welcome to the NEW world….

    • $24698634

If your ideas were so good, why couldn’t you get your voters to the polls? More than 40% (almost 90M) of eligible voters did not vote in 2012. You had a large enough pool to draw from but couldn’t attract enough to win. If you convinced just a little more than 3% of those 90M to vote your way, your side would have won.

      • Silence Dogood

Don’t play stupid, Ohio and PA were classic cases of VOTER FRAUD and you effing well know it. Romney drew crowds in the TENS OF THOUSANDS and received ZERO votes? Yeah, right. Go crawl back into mom’s basement, she’s made your grilled cheese with the crusts cut off just the way you like them. Idiot.

        • $24698634

Maybe you should suspend the self-delusion and face reality.  And fyi, Mom’s long gone and I’m comfortably retired.  Who’s the idiot, stupid?

Who’s delusional and stupid? That would STILL be you. You have no clue and retired? So you’re on the dole? It figures you cretin. Go crawl back under your rock you loser. You’re a bitter sad little person with delusions of grandeur. You sit in your smugness pointing your little sausage fingers at others self projecting your own flaws. Yeah, you’re a moron that hasn’t a clue. Hope the catfood tastes good dipshit.

So sad and only the beginning. It’s funny how Obama and Boehner said that they are willing to compromise on taxes to avoid the fiscal cliff… When they should also be looking at all the small businesses closing down because of the stupid Obama healthcare act. • Matt

What aggravates me about this is the libs are comfortable in their union guaranteed jobs- either worker’s unions or public employee unions- and the ones being let go are the workers and producers, who generally vote Republican. Public union employees don’t see a drop in their rate of pay and can’t be fired. They threw a fit in my neck of the woods last year when they heard they were getting a smaller yearly raise.

      • http://twitter.com/SandraHopes2 Sandra Hopes

Really? If no one is buying anything how long do you think those jobs are going to last? First step, close shop, second step fix and repair everything you own.

      • http://www.facebook.com/louis.neff.16 Louis Neff

Even the union jobs aren’t guaranteed anymore. More and More of those plants and firms are shipping jobs overseas because the unions are running them into the ground. Of course, they won’t blame the Unions nor the Administration…. Just the poor suckers who own the companies for “selling out”.
The Union workers are just as vulnerable as the rest of us… the Union Officials are the ones who wont be affected.

  • Ty Pryor

When conservatives read this article they think of how heartbreaking this story is.

When liberals read this, they think of how racist small business owners are.

    • Liberal Hater

And how UNPATRIOTIC! These nitwits couldn’t run a profitable lemonade stand, but they’re going to tell actual business owners to just “hire more people!” Stupidity squared.

Mostly because they think economic activity comes from “funding requests”

      • http://twitter.com/SandraHopes2 Sandra Hopes

  • johnnyforeigner

Can someone please explain to me why these small businesses are closing up now, when the policy doesn’t come into effect until 2014?

Surely the smart thing to do, if you really can’t afford to pay for the healthcare of employees is to carry on in business (and therefore make profits) right up until the policy becomes law, and then close up shop. Right? Why close up when you are still profitable? Anyone help me here?

    • Maria Seeger

      It’s because;

a)people are getting ready to be hit with higher taxes

      b) the amount of money businesses are going to have to fork over in 2014 when Obamacare kicks in is based on the # of employees the business had in 2013, so it makes sense for business owners to adjust their figures and plan accordingly.

      c) Small business owners are not in the habit of paying insurance for their lower level employees. It’s common practice for a small business owner to make sure their employees work less than the full time work week of 40 hours (30 now that Obamacare has changed that) so that they *don’t* have to pay insurance. That’s the way it’s worked in the past, and the small business owner doesn’t see any need or obligation to change now.

      d) If Obama thought small business owners were going to roll over and go along with his so-called “Affordable” Care Act, he was sadly delusional, especially since he insulted and belittled them by saying that they didn’t build their small businesses, the government did.

      e) What’s the point of making a profit when you know Uncle Sam is just going to take it away from you because you’re rich and must pay your fair share? I don’t blame small business owners for taking their marbles and going home.

    • JimmyNeutron

There is also the effect of a diminishing economy and momentum. Obama’s reelection guarantees that ACA will be implemented…and Keystone is dead…and drilling on public lands…and more regulations…etc, etc. The idea is that business owners both large and small are not only looking at the economic realities of the ACA and other items, they are gauging the potential massive slowdown in economic activity due to what they perceive from other business owners and such. At some point you go with your gut instinct and you measure the risk and the potential reward and that balance doesn’t appeal. That is what is happening.

    • ReedAboutCom

For two years the obamacare taxes have been adding to the cost of doing buisness. But starting Jan 2013 the major taxes are going to hit to pay for Ocare and that is what they can’t afford. The actual coverage doesn’t start till 2014.

    • FunRunnerGirl

I would assume they were barely hanging on, hoping for change of direction. For middle class Americans, there’s so little disposable income w/ food and gas prices, they’re just not making it. It’s hopeless. The poor are well-taken care of, rich are fine, it’s the middle class being buried. EXACTLY WHAT ROMNEY WAS SAYING!!!I know a former Obama supporter in my office said if there was no change, she’s done making her house payment, giving up here house. Just not making enough to hang on. I’m no expert, but that’s the “word” you hear.

    • Liberal Hater

I don’t know. Why did my health care costs go up $20 a paycheck starting next year when Obamacare doesn’t fully implement until 2014? Businesses have been barely staying afloat and were looking for a sign that things will turn around. Obama winning wasn’t that sign. It was the sign that it’s going to be the same or get worse. So they’re just giving up. Your assumption that they’re profitable is probably wrong. Some businesses are poorly run, sure… but many just can’t hang on in this environment any longer. As much as I’m sure liberals like to believe the big evil business owners stick it to their employees, most small business owners pay themselves LAST. You can only do that so long. I suggest you go start a business and maybe educate yourself a little on how the real world works….

    • http://twitter.com/BlissDesignz Tabitha Taylor

If you want to see it from a small business owners point of view, Google the article “Franchisors Warn Obamacare Will Halve Profits”

    • Lisa Keller

Sure Johnny, it’s simple why should I risk what I have left (what I worked my little ass off for) to keep a company going that is going to die. Like putting your dog on life support to watch it suffer. A business can’t operate on a day to day business plan, it must have a long range plan. You wouldn’t pay $100 to have an old t-shirt tailored, you won’t get out what you put in it would you? Now little Johnny, shave your face, wipe your nose, cut your hair, dress like an adult and go out and try to EARN a living. No one OWES you a damn thing. Sadly, you will continue to drink your mocha latte, play on your iphone and wear your AF clothes and bitch about corporations and evil rich people.

We’ll see those stats in the monthly jobless reports.

      • soulhuntre

Why would you think that? Int he months before the election those reports were twisted out of any real accuracy to suit the political needs of this administration – surely the ones showing the aftermath will also be twisted.

        • JimmyNeutron

Good point, I just don’t know how else to measure it. If I were skilled at the interwebs I could create a site where small business could log on and report their lay-offs as well as why they are laying off. Large businesses are easy to track, small ones not so much. Weekly jobless claims perhaps – but you’re still having to trust the govt reporting.

        • http://www.cosmicgirl.net/ Cosmic Girl

They can try to twist those reports all they want, but once enough people start losing their jobs, no one will be able to twist the shouts & cries of thousands of really pissed off people.

I’m unsure of everyone else, no personal knowledge. But on Friday, a coworker’s husband came in the office, said one of his tenants shut his business, laid off 12 employees. Now he’s vacating his property he had leasing. Was trying to hang on and now is done. Again, I can’t speak for others, but this story isn’t fiction. I’m afraid this one is real. He was very upset, was a good friend and client.

I just ran into an aquainence of mine that I haven’t spoken to in years, she is closing shops across 4 states on Dec 28th, almost 500 people will be out of work. Her company has been operating in the red for 3 1/2 years now so she could keep these people employed to support their families. Now she will close the company that she started almost 40 years ago, she started it by saving and investing money she made working 2 jobs at 85 cents an hour. She also said some will be losing their jobs before Thanksgiving…I told her I hope they are the ones with the Obama/Biden bumper stickers on their cars.

    • $24698634

Plans change, and when someone is hell bent on taking away everything you worked for, it’s time to pack up. Furthermore you are talking about a business the size of Boeing, Ford Motor etc, small businesses plan year to year, and in some cases day to day. They provide most of the jobs, and they are the ones about to get hit with the new tax.

ARgued with a lib over the weekend about this – he’s about as left wing as they come and I don’t think we’re going to be able to stay friends- his entire reaction to all of these businesses closing was that business owners are “greedy” and should “make less money” for the “common good.”. There was such a disconnect from reality. I asked him why all of these businesses would be announcing layoffs right after the election and his response was (I kid you not) “to spite Obama.” Yes, businesses are just closing down to spite Obama. I wanted to punch him in the face. I doubt we’ll speaking much in the future.

You might ask him if he would be willing to take a pay cut “for the common good.” After all, he may be making significantly more than the janitor who cleans his building, and that’s just not fair. He should do with less so that the janitor can make a living wage, right? Then tell him he’s greedy and racist if he says that he couldn’t possibly live on less.

I can’t afford to close my struggling business, there is no place to work around here.

  • KN

George McGovern was one of the most liberal
persons who ever ran for the Presidency. In 1992, twenty years after
his failed Presidential bid, he wrote a piece for the Wall Street
Journal which reflected an epiphany regarding the difficulty in running a
business under the heavy hand of government regulation. This, after he
bought a business in 1988 which ended in bankruptcy.

My own business perspective has been limited to that small hotel and
restaurant in Stratford, Conn., with an especially difficult lease and a
severe recession. But my business associates and I also lived with
federal, state and local rules that were all passed with the objective
of helping employees, protecting the environment, raising tax dollars
for schools, protecting our customers from fire hazards, etc. While I
never have doubted the worthiness of any of these goals, the concept
that most often eludes legislators is: “Can we make consumers pay the
higher prices for the increased operating costs that accompany public
regulation and government reporting requirements with reams of red
tape.” It is a simple concern that is nonetheless often ignored by
    legislators.

Our Connecticut hotel, along with many others, went bankrupt for a
variety of reasons, the general economy in the Northeast being a
significant cause. But that reason masks the variety of other challenges
we faced that drive operating costs and financing charges beyond what a
    small business can handle.

In retrospect, I wish I had known more about the hazards and
difficulties of such a business, especially during a recession of the
kind that hit New England just as I was acquiring the inn’s 43-year
leasehold. I also wish that during the years I was in public office, I
had had this firsthand experience about the difficulties business people
face every day. That knowledge would have made me a better U.S. senator
and a more understanding presidential contender.

In short, “one-size-fits-all” rules for business ignore the reality of
the marketplace. And setting thresholds for regulatory guidelines at
    artificial levels — e.g., 50 employees or more, $500,000 in sales —
takes no account of other realities, such as profit margins, labor
intensive vs. capital intensive businesses, and local market economics.

So, let me get this straight,; If you own a business and it is profitable until a government mandate makes the potential for profit unlikely, you are un-American for not remaining in business at a loss. The left would have us believe that altruism should be the only function of a corporation. Meanwhile, we happily borrow 40 cents of every dollar we spend as a goverment. As the economic cliff looms in the very near future and we see the U S Senate, under Democrat control, fail to do its Constutionally mandated job of sending a budget to the White House for over 3 years. Our government is continuing to increase the debt limit so that our great-grandchildren will be left to pay our debts. When jobs disappear in the private sector, we will all be forced into the single-payer program that B H O envisioned.

    • Grumpa Grumpus

      @Bill Lindsey:

If we just stopped the Continuing Resolutions, there’d be a chance.

But the House Republican Leadership, as they noisily announced after the midterms, set out to co-opt (their word) the Constitutionalist/T.E.A. party people elected. For the most part they were successful.

But what does that tell you?

It tells me there is no compromise with the Progressive-Republicans in Leadership.

They might call themselves, or others might call them “Establishment Republicans”— but make no mistake — they ARE Progressives!

What does that mean in practical terms?
I do not care about anything but defeating them!

Better the most Progressive DumperCrat— a proclaimed enemy than the “friend” with a hidden dagger!

If a Progressive-Republican does what seems like the Right Thing, I’ll give it a fluoroscopy and bomb-sniffing dogs!

If a Progressive-Republican says he just wants to shake my hand & be a friend, I’ll count my fingers both before and after!

He he says he’s on “my” side, I’ll put on a hauberk and watch for falling pianos!

But I’ll never treat them like a friend. They aren’t! I’ll replace them with either an open enemy or friend at first opportunity!

      In short, a Progressive-Republican is a traitor!

He is a creature of the enemy wearing the clothes of a friend! He is a sleeper-assassin planted to kill our country by “being a friend” but failing us when it will do the most harm!

      BTW:
Have you ever noticed how exercised every Progressive— both sides of the isle— get when anyone mentions purging the “ravening wolves”?

There’s a reason they go nuclear when anyone does.

Think about it. We can discuss it if anyone cares…

Why has Obama put such a burden on employers? Canada, where I live, has had socialized, universal health care for decades. It is funded by a small monthly fee, but mostly out of general tax revenue. Some employers may offer packages, that will pay the fee and cover dental care (never socialized), but are under no obligation to do so.

As sad as it is , Oblamer is going to impose even more restriction’s and regulation’s on employer’s. Small business as well as large will be told whom it is they have to hire. @Bob Harmon:

“A Republic, madam— if you can keep it!”

      — Benjamin Franklin, when asked what form the new government would take.

I disagree. They warned repeatedly about this:

      “vote for virtuous men”
“avoid political parties, they inflame the passions that conflict with choosing men for good governance”
“political parties are to be shunned, they give comfort to the faddish.and allow a comfort in unwise choices”

We’ve done this to ourselves. In two ways:

(1)When we could have given the Republican Party the competition needed to keep it honest— via another party, with relatively little discomfort we were afraid a DumperCrat would win.

So, the teaching moment that would have occurred in a relatively honest environment of socalist policy implemented locally, on a limited scale, or temporarily was forgone and the general public never got to see social fail upclose in painful but survivable ways.

(2)We slept, allowing the politicians, of all people, to write election law unsupervised!

Why should we be surprised when these guttersnipes wrote themselves a two party monopoly?

With the financial barriers in place, there’ll never be another Reagan!

We wouldn’t have had him if it hadn’t been for wealthy patriots! The Progressive-Republicans, the so-called “Establishment Republicans” sure didn’t want him!

So you say “let the hoi-paloi, a national movement fund a new Reagan!”

Yeah, they’re taking care of that problem right now… on the financial end. But they’re also putting other laws into place to make it even more difficult to successfully circumvent the two-party ping-pong squirrel pageant we’re trapped in!

Well, with my health I’ll be done soon enough, I don’t know what you’re going to do. Good luck!

Luckily, it is an LLC in which he and his business partner do all the work themselves, and there are no employees to lay off, BUT the businesses they patronize for supplies will see cuts as a result of him and others in the same line of work being unable to purchase supplies. Already, customers who were lined up for him are cancelling, holding on to their money for dear life.

The facilities employ 627 workers. It warned earlier this month that the strike, by about 30 percent of its workforce, could lead to bakery closures. “We deeply regret this decision, but we have repeatedly explained that we will close facilities that are no longer able to produce and deliver products because of a work stoppage — and that we will close the entire company if widespread strikes cripple our business,” Hostess Brands CEO Gregory F. Rayburn said.

      • Timothy Noonan

Seems you are just stung or have an aversion to information that provides details of the actions of these employers. No one will predict solid economic growth for next year and that is the feeling no matter who is elected. That is largely due Congress and their pandering to an electorate that gets their information from bloggers and radio host whose first priority is to make their own money by increasing web site hits and ratings. They do this by entertaining and not necessarily informing people.

        • maxonepercent

So you admit that the Obama voters were mislead by inaccurate news reporting? • scrubjay

Customer demand depends on having the money to pay for the services those businesses provided. People keep their current car running longer instead of buying a new one. They live with their worn carpet instead of replacing it. They stay at home instead of taking a vacation. They eat at home instead of going to a restaurant. Then the auto dealerships, carpet stores, resorts and restaurants close. Then the salesmen, carpet layers, housekeepers and waitresses are out of a job. That’s how it works. When you tax and regulate businesses to death they have less to invest in growing their businesses, fewer employees and less with which to pay their employees.

Perhaps in some cases, but undoubtedly there will be a net loss of businesses. What you are failing to recognize is that the profit margins for a lot of smaller businesses is often very narrow, when the government adds additional taxes and the business is unable to transfer those costs it can easily make the business insolvent. But that was the whole point of Obamacare in the first place, to run the mom and pop businesses out of the market to make more room for Walmarts.

          • maxonepercent

We did survive, but Economic growth was higher and national debts were significantly lower at those times in history, so it isn’t really a good comparison. On the other hand, Obamacare is like a person on the verge of bankruptcy maxing out his credit card.

All the lefties need to understand something: the situation is never, ever going to
improve, unless they put people in charge of government whose driving priority
is unleashing the private sector to dramatically boost jobs and employment. The idea of extracting money from “the rich” to subsidize the unproductive classes won’t work –
even if the government takes every nickel from “the rich”. All that happens is that the rich eventually join the poor – the “crabs in a bucket” paradigm. Then you have everybody poor – and then where are you going to get the money?

Obama never ran so much as a shoeshine stand in his life. Under him, all you are going to get is MORE people on EBT cards – for supplemental food assistance, and
“disability” – thanks to the Obamacare job destruction machine that kicked into gear within 24 hours of the election, and is picking up steam daily.

Ten days ago, America was a lurching Titanic, with a gaping hole in its side. Last week, for some insane reason, the American electorate chose to turn the Titanic around, and ram the iceberg again.

Elections have consequences, people. You ain’t seen nothin’ yet. The next four years are going to be unimaginably harsh. The mess that exists now will soon be “the good old days”. Entitlements HAVE to be cut – it is mathematically impossible to keep them going. The Unions – particularly the public employee unions – HAVE to be
constrained – it is mathematically impossible to fulfill their demands.

Think about being flat broke – completely penniless. Grim thought, right? Well, America needs to come up with $16,000,000,000,000 in surplus revenue – that is, collect that much more tax income cumulatively than it spends – just to get UP to the point of being TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY BROKE. That is the most optimistic dream goal that any politician can imagine – to JUST be flat and completely broke.
