Oops! Cory Booker, vote suppressor? Tweets no voting by email in NJ despite Christie’s order

Oh, dear. Newark Mayor Cory Booker tweeted that it is not true that New Jersey voters affected by Hurricane Sandy can vote via fax or email. Twitter users, of course, believe him.

But, what’s this? Governor Christie tweeted the opposite: Voting by email and fax will be available to Hurricane Sandy affected voters.

Other Twitter users were quick to point out Booker’s false information.

Confusion, indeed. Cory Booker, unintentional vote suppressor!

More from The Atlantic:

Less than a week after the storm — and just three days before Election Day — New Jersey officials have announced that they will allow those displaced from their homes and first responders to submit their votes by email or fax. A directive issued by Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno officially designated displaced New Jersey residents as “overseas voters,” thus giving them the electronic voting option already available to New Jersey residents serving in the military. In addition, displaced voters and first responders may also vote by provisional ballot at any New Jersey polling location.

Maybe it’s Mayor Booker who needs to do some fact-checking.

Update: Looks like Mayor Booker may fact-check himself shortly.

Update: Whoops! As Twitchy reported, his initial claim was completely false.

Whoops! Obama supporters, please listen: Michelle Obama says ‘get to the polls on November 2′

Okay, so if I can set up a couple of computers with different IP addresses or go around the state using different fax machines I can vote as many times as I please.

What if a NJ resident temporarily relocated to another state while the house/apartment was rebuilt? Would NJ accept faxes from non-NJ area codes?

I see all sorts of potential voting fraud.

    • Conservaguy

Yep, I see this as being a boondoggle of epic proportions.

    • J. Cox

You only need one computer.A simple download can mask and reset your IP as many times as you want.

      • Grumpa Grumpus

        @J. Cox

I originally thought FAX voting was a joke! The conversation below sent a chill up my back.

This is an actual conversation, transcribed from my dictaphone, with my 15yr granddaughter.

She’s a mathematics/computer prodigy, and has been scouted by several universities, incl. MIT and CA’s version of MIT.
(btw, I knew Universities scouted for sports, but not the sciences…)

I thought others might find interesting the off-handed ease she treats it with. I can attest that she’s never over-promised her whole life.

That it seems easily done is what’s disquieting.

        The Grumpus:
Mary, you do computer things. I’ve mentioned NJ’s allowing FAX & email voting. How much time to whomp-up a FAX & Email ballot stuffer?

Grumpa! Do I have to tell Grammy you’re changing into a Democrat? (both laugh)

        Seriously Grumpa!
Well, it would be very easy Grumpa. But how long it would take depends on how complicated you want it.

Simpliest would take a few hours.

I could write some quicky code that would use different internet FAX services to make it seem like a lot of different people. It would mix it up with email votes to keep from creating a pattern. It’d pull the names off public voters rolls and integrate registered addresses with storm damage areas.

If you want it to wander around, instead if spoofing an origin, it would take about a day— I’d have to test it.

But Grumpa… you’re not really serious, right?

        • EastValleyConservative

WOW. Not that I doubted this could happen, but to see how is interesting. Look for “landslides” for Obama in storm-ravaged areas and let’s see how this plays out.

    • EastValleyConservative

I see this as potential for massive voter fraud. How many people NOT displaced will be voting several times??? We shall see. We can do this, but can’t get ballots to our military. Shameful.

  • MoxieLouise

    Quick, somebody call the UN!!

    • MoxieLouise

Hey, Downtwinkles, it was a joke. I do not believe Cory Booker was practicing voter suppression. Joke. Haha. OK?

  • nc

Just as Benghazi was a cover up on top of a cover up on top of a cover up, Storm Sandy is turning into one giant mess on top of one giant mess on top of one giant mess.

  • Dave Swagler

I think Booker deserves a break. He might have recognized the potential for massive voter fraud and decided that Christie couldn’t be that stupid. Makes me wonder what Christie is thinking. I think GaryTheBrave spells it out nicely.

    • Grumpa Grumpus

      What’s Christie thinking?

Why, he’s thinking like a good Progressive-republican(sic caps)!

Anything to help out the Frame-moving Progressives! Gotta!!!!! Get!!!! BuddyFellowProgressive!!! Dingleberry™!! Re-elected!

Any remember: under the “Any Means Necessary”© Rule, bloodshed’s just a bonus!

    • Chris Valentine

Probably thinking that New Jersey’s a lost cause anyway.

  • pcimarron

Obviously some miscommunication going on….Mr. Booker was on an news show this morning, shouldn’t he be helping out with the hurricane relief instead of being part of a political pannel to talk about the election?

  • JustLikeAnimals

If NJ residents are allowed to vote by email or fax they will no doubt be accepted as “provisional’ ballots since they would have to looked upon by any responsible election board as suspect and subject to manipulation, tamper, and fraud due to casting through non-conventional and unproven means such as email and faxing. They likely won’t be counted until 7-10 days after Nov 6 which means they would not be part of the election night counting to determine a winner. A much better option is mobile voting vans or trucks complete with voter rolls so voter legitimacy can be ascertained and votes can be counted on election day.

    • EastValleyConservative

The left isn’t looking for legitimate. They are looking for any means necessary.

  • Anonymous

Do the soldiers have the same option?

  • TocksNedlog

I wonder if the displaced persons that Mayor Hooker bragged about letting stay at his house know how to cast their ballots.

  • poljunkie♪

When are they going to extend the same privledge to our military who didnt receive their ballots? Oh, I know- never. Since the majority vote Republican.

    • RogueRose

The article from The Atlantic (quoted above) makes clear this option is already available for deployed military from New Jersey.
“Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno officially designated displaced New Jersey residents as “overseas voters,” thus giving them the electronic voting option
already available to New Jersey residents serving in the military.”

  • centrist86

It’s New Jersey. I highly doubt any kind of voter fraud will change where the states electoral college votes will go. I do however, worry for the local and state level elections.
Also, I think it was respectable for Booker to confirm, and change his tweets to post the right information. The usual Obama surrogate repeats false information, even if called out on it. (double down debbie for example).

  • http://twitter.com/ObamaLies2Much Obama Lies

Just another Republican stunt to intimidate voters. Only rich white folks have fax machines and email.

  • http://twitter.com/ObamaLies2Much Obama Lies

In all reality, it doesn’t matter. Obama already counts their electoral votes as his anyway.

  • Michael R Bardsley

Ok. So they CAN vote by fax or email. Did anyone set any suppressive limits on how many times a person can vote? Man I hope not. That would be so unfair.

  • Goldenah

If NJ accepts only a driver’s license (or passport) as a form of ID, I doubt fraud would be easy. There’s a lot of steps and proof of where you live, etc. in getting a driver’s license since 9/11.

  • Marcy Cook

NJ and NY were a lock for obama anyway…I don’t think this way of voting will effect the outcome in those states….
