Dr. James Lowery at a “get out the vote” event in Forsyth, Ga., on behalf of the president are making the rounds on Twitter today. According to the Monroe County Reporter, Lowery, who delivered the benediction at President Obama’s inauguration ceremony in 2009, told an audience of voters that level of “hatred and bitterness” coming out of the election had him returning to his views as a young militant that all white people are going to hell.
The Reporter also quoted Lowery as saying, “I don’t know what kind of a n—– wouldn’t vote with a black man running. All that he did with the stimulus was genius. Nobody intelligent would risk this country with Romney.” Contacted by the Daily Caller for comment, Lowery said the line about white people going to hell was clearly a joke, and he didn’t remember making the second statement.
Opinion on Twitter is split between whether Lowery’s comments represent the “new tone” in Washington or the “post-racial” America of the Obama administration.
