Jersey Shore on fire: Fires break out across devastated Mantoloking, NJ

Horrifying news out of storm-ravaged New Jersey this morning. Fires have broken out in the already devastated town of Mantoloking, N.J.

Firefighters may not even have a way to fight the blazes.

More from The Bellingham Herald:

An official with the Ocean County Emergency Management Office says authorities believe natural gas lines are fueling the flames. The official says the homes burned down two days ago when Sandy pounded the affluent town.

The official, who would not give his name, says firefighters can’t reach the scene because the roads are impassable. The town was under a mandatory evacuation order ahead of the storm.

Terrible. Our prayers are with all in Mantoloking. Like the rest of the Jersey Shore, the small town was ravaged by Hurricane Sandy.

Mantoloking is near Brick, N.J., which also suffered horrific destruction.

And Point Pleasant, N.J.

Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with all affected. Twitchy will monitor this dangerous fire situation and update with further developments.

I can’t imagine having to go through anything like this. The pictures of so many homes on the coast and inland destroyed is so sad. :( The property lost can never compare to those lives lost. No matter what differences and ways of expressing our differences, loss of life trumps ideology.

You know what would be scarier and more damaging than a hurricane named Sandy? A President named Romney

TeaPublicans are pissed off at Chris Christie because he told the truth about President Obama. As always, the truth is their biggest enemy

Obama, Bloomberg, Cory Booker, Chris Christie = leadership in an emergency. Romney’s canned foods campaign = display of utter incompetence.

Incompetence? Versus doing what exactly …that you wouldn’t term incompetent. I imagine you might be satisfied if he just sat in his house doing nothing till Tuesday. LOL that since Katrina every politician learning how not to look like a jackass is now called ~leadership. Woo hoo government on tv and giving away money “LEADERSHIP”.

If your hero Bloomberg had had a mandatory evacuation of the other jackasses on Breezy Point like he should have done, and shut down the power we may not have had to be sitting through all that.Considering the founders of Breezy Point were all firemen, I’m pretty sure they knew that the entire island was at risk for weather for the past 120 years and decided it didn’t matter – let the GOVERNMENT take care of it. While they pay for birth control not flood control.

Let’s all thank our benevolent leader for the disaster photo-op which is all he’s really given us in 4 years. He’s a national embarrassment.

Really? Obama selectively acts as president. He’s around for Sandy but MIA (or campaigning) for Benghazi. If he smells self-responsibility, he avoids it like the plague. Sandy, however, a great photo-op and good excuse for him to put on his big boy pants for one of the few times during his presidency.

The governors should have called out the National Guard. If that was done, show me one step forward that Obama has accomplished in this tragedy. Sure, he and Christie politicized this event but nothing else. everything that has happened came from state resources and personnel. Obama still hasn’t acted presidential.

As I look at these devastating photos, my heart breaks for those impacted. I know that they are mercifully in a state of shock & numbness and I trust that their communities circle the wagons & hold them close as that shock wears off and reality sinks in.

Dammit… if only more people had just changed their light-bulb and cut back on fuel consumption this could have all been avoided. To hold such omnipotent power in the palm of our hands and fail to take preventative measures… almost as insane as the notion that light-bulbs cause the non-existent global warming.

I have a friend whose family had a little summer bungalow in Camp Osborn/Normandy Beach where the fires are burning now. It went back to her great-grandfather (her grandmother is 91 and this was HER father’s place, so…) and a time before there were even permanent structures there. It literally was a camp, that people set up with tents. Their place was 2 streets over from the condos that have the red & blue roofs. If you go up 5 pics, you can see the condos on the bottom right of the pic. Their place didn’t burn, it completely washed away. Her grandmother grew up going there, her mom grew up going there and her parents met there, she spent every weekend of the summers there as a kid/teen and it’s gone, just gone. Very sad.
