Zingers fly at Alfred Smith Dinner; Obama supporters not amused by Romney’s humor

President Obama and Mitt Romney traded jokes tonight at the white-tie Alfred Smith Dinner in New York City, held by the Catholic Archdiocese of New York to raise money for needy children. The media let us know before the first presidential debate that there would be no “zingers” in Denver, but the barbs were flying tonight.

Obama was first to speak and took a good number of shots at himself.

Romney, again proving not to be the emotionless straw man we’ve been sold by the media, had plenty of zingers of his own.

See for yourself:

http://youtu.be/kSznL29JyhQ

Reporters on the scene seemed genuinely pleased to see humor interjected into what has been a contentious race, but the president’s fans were not amused by what they saw as mean-spirited jibes.

Tough crowd. Anyone have a theory why?

Could we please have an entertainment professional weigh in?

Prez is NOT the leader of the free world. He’s leader of the U.S. only.

          • Sam Lynn

This was a direct “shot across the bow” of the lame-stream media. The media-types there knew that and it hit them hard because Mitt just told them that the American voting public knows what they are doing, and it is not right. I hope it embarrassed them in no small way. All of these lame-stream media types are a boil on the butt of journalism….

Romney was on ‘fire’, so I’m not surprised Obama’s fans not as amused as the popular vote contingent. Obama’s performance came across as a farewell and goodbye tour. As self deprecating as we’ve ever seen him, humbled by his own failings, and not just at the debates. He knows it’s over, just like we do.

    • Neil Leininger

4 years ago he was rubbing the election in McCain’s face. I just saw the Romney clip on You Tube and the man KILLED!

Opening graciously. Adding some self deprecation and then laying in some very polite well time Zingers on Obama, Biden and the media to tremendous applause. Very reminiscent of Regan in timing and delivery before an even more gracious closing.

Besides looking very dignified and Presidential in white tie and tails. While leaving Obama in the dust yet again!

    • Jack Deth

Why do I get the feeling this Down Vote was brought to you by the letter ‘R’. As in Regan and Romney?

Or the letter ‘O’ for Obama and my utter disdain of him?

I don’t know what these libs are crying about …. they sure thought it was funny when Dinglebarry raked The Donald over the coals at the journalists’ dinner back in May of last year that was supposed to be light hearted. And they thought it was great when Dinglebarry lambasted the Justices of the Supreme Court over campaign financing during his State of the Union Address back in January 2010. And they even seem to like what Mitt has to say just so long as everything he says is first filtered and/or watered down by their state run media. However, unfiltered Mitt is more than any of them can hold a candle to or bear to endure, lol.

Yo have to remember that the socialist attitude is, “everything that that isn’t right in my life is not my fault it is someone else’s”. If you have more than I do then you are cheating and you have to give some of it to me. They believe that the world revolves around everyone else feeling sorry for them. Obama is supposed to be the King and all of his little minions are supposed to think he is perfect and if it looks like he might not be then it surely is some one else’s fault and of course that someone else has to be wrong.

Call me superficial, but I just LOVED the way Mitt looked in that tux.

Oh, and he killed, too. I especially liked his references to his lifetime abstention from alchohol. I’ve never heard that about him before, and it was a nice distinction between him and the beer drinking, former choomster BHO.

    • Grumpa Grumpus

      @nc:
Romney holds a Temple Recommend – which means he’s allowed to enter the Temple. Not all Mormons are allowed. Temple Recommends must be renewed yearly.

The interview for worthiness includes asking about what’s known as “The Word of Wisdom”, a dietary law. It includes abstaining from alcohol, tobacco, and coffee. It also prohibits introdr into the body of foreign substances – which has always been considered to mean drugs not prescribed by a physician.

There are other questions, which I will not go into in detail. I will say that in addition to the questions simply asking if you are trying to live by the most basic tenents of the Church, there’s questions on your group affiliations. No KKK member will get a Recommend unless he lies through his teeth — in which case he shouldn’t have one anyway (dealing honestly is another question…)

The dietary laws– and they’re actually somewhat more than that – are interesting in that though they read like modern guidelines in content they’ve been around almost as long as the Church.

      I hope this helps!

      • azjazzlady

Those “dietary” laws are probably the main reason life long Mormons have a much higher rate of longevity!

Perfect example of the Left having zero sense of humor. I can’t stand Obama and even I thought his jokes were funny. Seriously, the Left needs to grow the F up.

  • Socal71

Romney killed it tonight and in all fairness Obama was funny too, just not as good. I’ve heard commentators say that voters aren’t swayed by events like this and in this climate that is pure nonsense. According to them, Americans only watch the first debate too, however this time we are proving them wrong and watching the them all and everything else we can see to get a better idea of who Romney is.

Especially since Obama painted him out to be a felon, a tax cheat, an exporter of jobs and a murderer. All of which weren’t true. So for liberals to say Mitt went hard, … Good for him. Romney should have no mercy on Obama after all the lies his campaign told and never let up until after he wins the election.

A sense of humor is very important to a lot of us that don’t live in fear and hate of each other. There is a reason Mitt is doing better than Obama and it’s called common sense.

    • http://twitter.com/TheAngieNC2 Angie (D)

Mitt’s jokes weren’t *that* hard IMO — and there were plenty about himself “This is how Ann & I dress at home” and several no-drinking/Mormon jokes — the idiots writing how “mean” Romney was to Obama give themselves away that they didn’t even watch when they say he can’t make fun of himself — he did, several times.

Obama was funny too but a little flat I thought — and both were very gracious at the end about how there is more to life than politics, etc — something Obama’s followers should try.

I have a couple of friends that feel about Obama like I do. It is all I can do to look at him I have such disdain for him. Even they said for about 9 min they actually thought he was funny and that he did a good job. Interesting how Romney supporters haven’t been whining about what Obama said, and many who lieteraly hate him have said it was funny and he did good. Have you heard one Obama supporter say that about Romney? No because all the comments either one made were based on some truth and the truth sometimes hurts, especially if you are not used to hearing it.

Romney made jokes about the Pres? Yeah ..well, DUH. That’s what the evening is all about. Some of you are as thin-skinned as your “nothing is my fault” Pres. O. They’re just jokes, kids. Maybe Candy Crowley should have been there to cut Romney off—as she did “28 times” in debate—according to CNN—and only cut of the Pres. 9 times.

I think the best cut of the night was at the press. Mitt said It’s my job to give Americans a plan for the future and it’s the presses job you don’t find out about it. If I didn’t know better that looked like shame on Katie Courics face. Nah that would require a soul. Mitt looked and acted like the president and it was AWESOME!!!

  • R Biron

Have to laugh even harder about peoples opinions, Romney and Obama didn’t write their own jokes people, comedy writers wrote them for them, so if the cut went deep, it’s probably because they were true and that writer had more ammunition than the other. It was supposed to be comedy not a referendum on there campaign! It was for a good cause and both Romney and Obama read from a script. It wasn’t their doing what the script said!

    • azjazzlady

It was not only the content of Romney’s jokes that was so good, but the superb comedy timing he demonstrated in their delivery. Who knew?

  • Ricky Spanish

The jokes are funny because they are true

what a bunch of babies on the left – either that or they aren’t familiar with the Al Smith dinner. It is by design, sharp humor directly aimed at the sensitive topics of the day with the theory that sometimes we put down the billy clubs and just laugh at this stuff a little. and by the way, Obama was self-depreciating because he had no other choice, he’s really gooned things up. You guys are caught in the four year old mantra of don’t question or joke about Obama. Get over yourselves, you’re about to move out of the White House

  • http://www.facebook.com/marilyn.v.sabo MariLyn Vaughn Sabo

Romney went first. Probably thought Obama would roast him as well. Obama probably thought he’d hang Romney out to dry by only using the zingers on himself, making him look like he took the high road (for once). The only line I thought was in poor taste was when Romney mentioned the support of Ann, then said Obama’s support was Bill Clinton. Considering they both are supposed to have solid marriages, this was not well received and hit me as negative on Michelle O.

  • heynorm48

Obama’s supporters are so prickly and sensitive. Just proves they can’t handle the truth.

  • Todd

I knew that Obama’s Cheer leaders would be pissed off. I know a lot of people just like them, Very small minded. Nothing worse than somebody that can dish it all day & every day But can’t take it.

  • Gary_Guitar_087

I hear a lot of Liberal whining because their messiah took a few barbs. Typical libs, they bash McCain, Palin, Bush, anyone who disagrees with them, but the minute they start getting it back, they cry foul.

  • jp2feminist

Oh, but it is okay for Obama, his campaign staff, and the media to SLANDER Mitt Romney on a daily basis? Please, people! Grow some skin.

  • Dave Frank

all you bet-wetting libs are so pathetic! your “romney is just mean!” comments just prove you can’t take what you dish out! only what you dish out is more vile and vicious by far! hopefully we’ll see more libtard roasting in the next 8 years with Romney in the WH!

    • azjazzlady

No, soon to be prez, Romney was not mean. MEAN is what Obama and his surrogate, Candy Crowley, were in the debate when they both lied about Obama’s Rose Garden speech and Crowley cut off just about every statement Romney was trying to make!!

      • SineWaveII

Not to mention, not giving Romney the chance to rebut any of obama’s lies.

  • Peter J. Stein

As I read some of the Presidents supporters lambast Gov. Romney, I was struck by how little sense of humor they have and that it really shows how little the media has challanged Obama the last 31/2 years. Letterman still lampoons Bush as much as Obama blames everything on him.

    • SineWaveII

That’s how it works. To be a libtard you have to have a humor-ectomy first.

    • Darkstar1661

Thats the thing that stands out to me too.

Its like they have no sense of humor what so ever, unable to laugh at anything from the night other then the canned Obama lines solely because of the person delivering them. I have no doubt, if Obama was a Republican, that very performance would have been “boring, stale, predictable, delivered poorly, out of touch”, etc

And yeah, with last night really being the only time Obama has been seriously, heavily mocked, they are merely showing they just flat out cant handle it – it doesnt fit the narrative of how life is supposed to be so it cant possibly be funny. One has to wonder how they will take it the day after the election…

  • http://www.facebook.com/SingleH Mark Harvey

Romney’s remarks were fantastic. He showed wit and the ability to engage a crowd. The jabs were light hearted and certainly not in any way inappropriate. Kudos Mitt … Nice job! He also spoke of his respect for the President … and his family. He showed class throughout. Lighten up lefties … you only feel the way you do because there is soo much truth to what he says. Obama’s record is laughable. By the way, President Obama did a very good job at this event as well.

  • Robert Willis

    funny how liberals
love to bash people they don’t like showing no quarter…but let their guy get
a good thrashing and they cry like babies…..and say, “Romney was mean,
boo hoo, hoo”….what a bunch of little sissies…..they can dish it but they
can’t take it…..Romney made Obama look like the failure he is last night (just
like he did on the first debate…and yes…..even the second debate despite Obama
getting help from the moderator “tainted Candy”)….Obama is an EPIC failure
(by design)….he’s not trying to take money from the rich nor the
poor…..these are ALL straw man arguments…..he is after the middle class….trust
me….the middle class is what stands between him and his total control of the
country (just like Obamacare….which has nothing to do with healthcare….and more
to do with population control of the masses as it’s tentacles reach out way beyond
heathcare)….the middle class are the ones pushing back against his policies
in the form of voters, tea party groups and such……his plan has ALWAYS been
to destroy the middle class not punish the rich!……as Romney said
once……even if Obama did get another four years the rich would be just fine
(saying basically that the rich do just fine on their own and they don’t need
any help….AND…..the poor?…well they don’t pay anything in the first place and
are the ones getting money from the federal government in the form of welfare,
EBT…..their votes are going to Obama anyway….they don’t want the gravy train to
end)…..so don’t believe Obama’s bull$hit….he is out to destroy the greatest
middle class the world has even seen……show me a middle class in any other
country that enjoys all the luxuries we take for granted….think about
it…..even the poorest of our country live better than their contemporizes in
other countries (free cell phones, cable television, assistance for food, subsidized
housing, daycare for their children if they are working, in some cases gas for
their car to get to work)…..I’ve been to other countries….they might sound
like great places to live but throw yourself under the wheel of their economy
and you’d be running home to the United States of America…..liberals love to bash
our way of life because they have never had any other life to compare it to….why
do you think so many people risk everything to come here?…..they certainly aren’t
jumping the fence to go to Mexico, or floating a boat in Key West to paddle off
to Cuba or Venezuela for a better life…..

    • 95truefan95

47% were Romneys words. No sound bite, his words. Not lies. His own words.

      • Patriotgal

There are 47% of Americans that do not pay income tax. TOTAL TRUTH. Obama will go down in history as “The Welfare President”. Never said it was a lie. I responded to the brilliant way Romney used comedy to refute the lies the media and obama has told about him. Do you not understand what I am talking about?? I guess you don’t. I wish liberals were able to have a REAL discussion about TRUTH instead of glossing over the issue and focusing on the little things. Oh, that sounds familiar. Isn’t that Obama’s strategy to get attention off the REAL important issues?

O supporters need to lighten up. they are not used to anyone publicly saying anything about the prez. that isn’t loving and praising. I heard something today that may apply to this. A king is nothing without his subjects, they define him, elevate him, without them he is just a man. The only person cutting people off was Romney. The moderator did her job.

      • thomaspainelives

You’re an idiot if you can’t see Candy Crowley was NOT doing her job. Look up the definition of moderator. They’re supposed to give both sides equal time (Obama got 4 more minutes), stop people who go over (Romney interrupted numerous times, Obama hardly at all), and is supposed to be non-partisan (Crowley HELPING Obama with talking points about Libya by actually having the transcript of his Rose Garden speech). In other words, that “woman” was a paid shill for Obama.

I felt strongly that with Obama’s performance the past four years all that was needed to ensure a Republican victory this November was a canditate that was capable of inspiring citizens of this great country. For months and months Romney stumbled and bumbled his way through his campaign and I was fearful all was lost and we were going to have to suffer through the indignity that is Obama for another four long, miserable years. Then like a lightning bolt Romney came alive during the first debate and for the first time in a very long time I was extremely excited for our candidate and proud of our candidate. Romney will be a great president and he has made me proud to call myself a Republican!!!

  • http://twitter.com/bloodyhellmate Craig Edwards

What also needs to be considered is more people are now becoming aware of the political system on the past two elections than ever before. The Alfred E. Smith dinner has always been the moment both sides stop hardball political campaigning, and take a lighthearted moment of laughter (for charity since 1960), and that becomes news to a lot of new comers. Another factor is the knowledge of Roast humor and when folks like MSNBC starts fact checking, you know they miss the punch line. in 2016 when the Democratic Nominee shows up to plant zingers on President Mitt, they won’t show any issues with Roast Humor.

Being funny is generally an indication of high intellect. “Not getting it” or being offended in lots of cases is indicative of a not so high intellect. I watched both men deliver their lines. Judging them both on their comedic abilities I have to say that Mitt could easily do stand up comedy. And quite frankly, who would you rather spend time around…a man that’s amusing and humorous or a wet blanket ? And as far as hope and change goes, hope disappeared 4 years ago and the only person who likes change is a baby with a wet diaper.

Did they miss the parts where he WAS poking fun at himself? They are mad because he was funny.
