Vile: New ‘Doonesbury’ cartoons attack Romney’s Mormon missionary work

“Doonesbury” creator Garry Trudeau hasn’t been relevant for years, but that’s not stopping him from clinging desperately to his last shred of fame. In his comic strips this week, Trudeau has set his sights on a young Mitt Romney. Between 1966 and 1968, Romney did missionary work in France. During that time, he worked long hours and lived in very spare conditions. But that reality doesn’t sit well with Trudeau, who prefers to think of Romney as an entitled, luxury-loving rich kid who chose missionary work only to avoid military service.

You can view this week’s cartoon series here, here, and here.

Trudeau’s fans lapped up the anti-Mormon bigotry:

Yeah. Great stuff.

https://twitter.com/blueonporter/status/255775826694508545

Somehow, we doubt that.

Ah, yes. “Real reporters.”

Not everyone felt like licking Trudeau’s boots, though. Some people were decidedly unamused and are still waiting for the punchline; they won’t find one.

https://twitter.com/jeffreyfortin/status/255326462989697025

Indeed. It’s pathetic. And Trudeau should be ashamed. Unfortunately for him, any potential self-awareness is crowded out by his disgusting bigotry.

Freedom of Religion and you have the right to chose your religion. Don’t like Mormonism, Don’t be one….I respect all Religions…It is our choice….
Should we talk about Obama’s racist Church.
Obama slept in a racist Church for over 20 years…Rev. Wright is a racist. Obama sent him in hiding….Talk about that subject……….

Gotta love all the cries of “draft dodger” when Romney received a draft deferment. A deferment means delaying until his mission or education was complete and then you enter. Romney did as was required and was #300 in the lottery. Apparently, it is also considered draft “dodging” to actually enter the draft but get a number that is never called…

Agreed. Lefties are like broken records.

You need to update your analogies. Only a few of us are going to get that one.

None of them apparently care about Joe Biden’s academic deferments or his sudden case of asthma when they ran out.

Course, I’m very interested to know where all of these saps were during Vietnam. Somehow, just somehow, I doubt every single one of them was over there fighting. I know, sounds crazy, but let’s give it some thought.

Yeah, just like the fascination with teh National Guard records of Bush. Meanwhile they gave us Obama and Mr, I loather military CLinton….but fail to see teh wrogn in that.

So is our president’s new principle of respect for all religions going to lead him to condemn this as bigoted and hateful? Perhaps call up the comics syndication and ask them to remove it?

    Somehow I doubt that.

does anyone even read Mr. Jane Pauley’s comic doonsbury anymore?

  • NC-Conservative

Correct me if i’m wrong here, they attack Romney for trying to bring ppl to God yet they give O a pass while he was organizing protests and stirring up racial bigotry and black liberation theology as a valid excuse for not serving in any capacity? Always a double standard with the libtards!

  • o0Nighthawk0o

Read through some of the comments there and, not suprisingly, not a peep about Clinton during the same time period avoided the draft in much the same way as Romney did. The difference being that Clinton used exclusivly educational waivers. Romney was doing a service to others and following his faith at the time. They also fail to mention that when he got out of school he made himself available for the draft as required.

    • Shawn Smith

You don’t understand: when a liberal avoids being drafted for military service, it’s a conscientious decision to reject violence. When a conservative avoids military service, it’s cowardly hypocrisy. Glad I could set you straight here.

      • o0Nighthawk0o

(facepalm) Oh yeah, that’s right. Thanks for reminding me.

  • CalCon10

    From the liberal dictionary:
“Draft dodger”: Republican who gets a 2-year deferment then isn’t drafted.
Statesman: Bill Clinton. (In the real world: draft dodger.)

      You forgot one…
“Elder Statesman”: Joe Biden with FIVE deferrments.

Trudeau has given Obama a free pass for the past four years – he’s never even bothered to create a “symbol” to stand in for him as he has done for all presidents since the strip began. In fact, Doonesbury has pretty much ignored the Obama administration. Only Republicans are still targets for him.

    • http://twitter.com/thetugboatphil TugboatPhil

Like all good liberals, he’s scared of black people, even when they are only half.

Even the left didn’t like him for a while. in 1985, Saturday Review voted Trudeau one of the country’s “Most Overrated People in American Arts and Letters,” commenting that “The most publicized return since MacArthur’s has produced a strip that is predictable, mean-spirited, and not as funny as before.” I really don’t think he’s been funny in the last 25 years. Just read by the baby boomers that thought he was funny in the beginning.

    • http://pennyrobinsonfanclub.net/ PennyRobinsonFanClub

I don’t think he ever really was funny, just snide and snarky.

  • Adela Wagner

Thanks gary, you managed to get those Socialist French riled up with your stereotyping, but even sweeter, you managed to poke, poke, poke even more Freedom lovers into being more pissed off than they already were. I have never seen a more intolerant group than these liberals. Also, I love when they do NO research before jumping in with both feet, how ignorant and stupid you look. Romney did nothing illegal, served God, and came back prepared for his number to come up. it just never did, neither did my husbands and he is no dodger, he can still kickass at 67. Also , if Romney HAD gone over toVietnam, your ilk would be labeling him a “baby killer” because that’s just how hypocritical you are. It was your kind who were sitting on the side lines burning draft cards, now you whine about those who did not serve. liberal logic is based on hypocrisy, ignorance, stupidity and ass kissing covered in the juice of lemmings.

    • redheadgrl

You’re right – he did nothing illegal, but they will keep saying it like it’s true. Just like they say he commits tax fraud because he taxes the LEGAL deductions allowed in the tax code.

Clinton’s deferments were of no interest to Doonesbury and if they somehow had a change of heart since then, then why not harp on Biden’s 5 some odd deferments?

I’ve never met a democrat in my life who has a sense of shame and some integrity though Fox News has found 3 or 4 but naturally they have now all been thrown under the bus by their liberal counterparts.

  • Grumpa Grumpus

Odd how the comment about Progressives always begins with some version of “I didn’t expect…”

This allows people to measure the success of Progressivism’s dis-information campaign.

Their base attribute is their belief that what ever they believe at any particular moment is a spectacular feat of cognition and everyone should just concede their superiority.

I occasionally watched Star Trek: Next Generation. There was an episode where these mentally slow but cunning aliens would always repeat the refraim “We are smart. Very very smart” in what is obviously an effort to convince themselves.

They were what Progressivism’s philosophy turns people into.

Look at the boasts of the Progressives:

smartest, most compassionate, most intelligent, most honest, most tolerant, most generous, most inventive, deals squarely, most courageous, most reverent…

And the list continues. In short, they are trying to convince themselves — and us, also — that they are best suited to rule us against our wishes. After all, we’re “slopes” — our foreheads slope from lack of brains — so we don’t know what’s good for us.

Look at what they actually are:
They’re so intelligent and inventive they follow a philosophy that was old when I was a child and has been disproved so often that presenting the facts drives them to frenzy.

So tolerant that gutter-disparagements and death-threats drop from their lips like rain in a monsoon.

So compassionate and loving they think the best thing to do for homelessness is to supply new shopping carts and clean boxes for domiciles. And desire to create as many homeless streetpeople as possible. Their tolerance and compassion extrends to begging their god to kill people, while making them suffer as much as possible.

So reverent they treat God’s other children as commodities, and when inconvenience, their termination.

    Very unfortunate “comic” strips.

  • Mike Sanfilippo

The cries of “draft dodger” are very strange. Slightly less than 10% of Mitt’s generation fought in Vietnam. I guess they’d be happier if he was one of those 90% who weren’t in Vietnam and stayed home and worked, went to school or smoked pot and partied? Mitt was out preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. You know… love your neighbor. Turn the other check, do good to those that use you, uplift the poor….

  • NRPax

OK, I’m going to attempt to map out liberal logic. I’m hoping you guys will help me out if I miss anything…

According to a lot of liberals, Vietnam was an atrocity and we were out to oppress poor little brown people. Mitt was doing missionary work (Which was a legal deferment for military service) and was not drafted to a war that was supposedly such a bad thing. When he came back, he had a high draft number so he wasn’t called to serve.

Now, if he had gone to Vietnam he would have been a “brainwashed baby killer that committed war crimes” (But thank you for your service) and we would have been hearing about all the horrible things he did as a soldier.

In the meantime, our current President has no military record to speak of. Heck, he didn’t even join during the first Gulf War where he could have been a JAG. But avoiding military service is perfectly acceptable as long as you’re not a Republican.

If someone can explain this train of thought to me, I’d really appreciate it. In the meantime, I’m going to down some scotch and go meet my totem animal.

That’s absolutely the way it is. When John Kerry was running against Bush, he was a thrice purple heart winning war hero. When Obama is running against McCain, they talk about how Sarah Palin doesn’t have any foreign policy experience. Unfortunately their blatant hypocrisy is only visible to those that want to see it.

      • NRPax

Let’s not forget John Kerry lying about war crimes that he never witnessed. Slander is just fine as long as your a Democrat it seems.

  • lillymckim

Religious tolerance only applies to the Middle Eastern religions?
Shame on Doonesbury’s intolerance of anyones religion and missionary work.
I guess I missed Doonesbury’s comedic “attack” on the Muslim’s religion?
Whats wrong is that religion not fair game for you or are you just afraid of being arrested like the man currently sitting in a US jail for his use of freedom of speech?

  • TocksNedlog

Trudeau was against the war, and avoided the draft himself, yet complains that Romney didn’t serve. Amazing.

In the first strip of this series Trudeau writes “Young Mitt prepares for a life of annoying people.” It must truly be a blessing that community organizers NEVER annoy anyone.

  • Joseph Panello

I have two comments about your article.

    1) Your claim that Garry Trudeau hasn’t been relevant in years is dubious. He was awarded the US Army’s Commander’s award for Public Service in 2006 and received the Mental Health Research Advocacy Award from Yale in 2008. His comic strip continues to be widely read.

    2) If you read this week’s comic strip closely, you will see that Trudeau is not attacking Mormonism. Instead, he is demonstrating that Mitt Romney has a strong tendency to change his moral stance at the drop of a hat.

  • https://twitter.com/ColonelHaiku Colonel Haiku

hey Gary “Doonesbury” Trudeau… I’ll believe you’ve grown a pair of balls when I see you insulting Islam and not folks who would just shake your paw and wish you a good day after the insult.
