Side-splitting desperation: Obama runs attack ad starring Big Bird; Update: Axelrod beclowns himself

Just in case you thought silly season was over, climb aboard and fasten your seat belts for the Obama campaign’s final descent into self-parody. Team Obama is out today with a new attack ad featuring … Big Bird.

Oh, it’s real. And it’s spectacular. Spectacularly humiliating for the campaigner in chief.

There goes the nursery school vote!

“Mitt Romney: taking on our enemies, no matter where they nest.” This ad brought to you by the letters O, M and G.

The best part? The campaign is proud of this! Our aching sides! Team Obama thinks the 30-second video is so very clever and effective that it’s floating the rumor that the ad will appear on national television:

Politico reports that the campaign is “calling this a TV spot.” But at least one member of the Palace Guard media desperately hopes it ain’t so.

Mitt Romney is talking foreign policy and President Scaremonger is making Sesame Street ads. Oh how we love the taste of desperation in the morning!

This is a takeaway we can believe in:

Sunny day, sweepin’ the clouds away …

Obama henchman David Axelrod adds to the campaign’s humiliation:

Oh, my.

Update: Double side-splitting! “Sesame Street” requests that the ad be taken down.

  • Shawn Smith

Wouldn’t this be an illegal participation of a publicly-funded entity in politics?

    • o0Nighthawk0o

      That’s what I was wondering.

    • IN_RadioGuy

Seeing as how the Big Bird appearance on SNL’s Weekend Update almost went out of it’s way to avoid having the character make a political statement, I have to wonder if Team 0 even bothered getting permission. Only 9am on the East Coast so I’ll be curious to see if we don’t see a statement from Sesame Workshop before lunch asking the campaign/OFA to pull it. (No pun intended)

      • Dandee

        That’s what I was thinking.

        • Elaine

That’s why PBS has ‘requested” that Obama stop the ad or they WILL lose funding NOW! Good job BO!

          • PennyRobinsonFanClub

My God, someone please stop this 4-year-long amateur hour!

    • William Manning

Could be that footage falls under fair use.

      • Shawn Smith

Yeah, after watching it more carefully, I came to the same conclusion. It still feels wrong though.

      • IN_RadioGuy

Sesame Workshop has been almost Disney-esque in going after unauthorized use (such as day care centers having murals, unlicensed costumes for birthday party appearances) of the characters. If they have Big Bird’s appearance and design trademarked and Sesame Workshop trying to avoid being on record one way or the other, I could see there being some shaky grounds for any fair use claims. TV stations are getting more vocal about campaigns using their footage and those elements are actually addressing campaigns.

        • Cynthia Gray

keep in mind that Disney owns the “muppets” (and Sesame Street is composed of muppet characters) so you’re right on there about them being Disney-esque in going after unauthorized use!

          • IN_RadioGuy

Actually, either just before or soon after Jim Henson’s death the Muppet “family” was split. Sesame Workshop now owns most of the classic Sesame Street Muppets. Kermit is the exception as he and the rest of the “Muppet Show” Muppets are Disney owned now. The Henson family still owns the Fraggle Rock, Labarynth, Dark Crystal and pre-Sesame Street characters that weren’t merged into the Muppet Show.

    • BeyondPolls

Probably, but they’ve (the Obama admin) never let a silly little thing like that get in their way. coughcoughSebeilliuscoughcough

    • xristosdomini

After the Kathleen Sabellius snafu earlier this campaign? I doubt that crossed anyone’s mind.

  • Paul C.

It’s called grasping at straws. Better than the 90 billion spent on green jobs.

  • RaggedyAnn46

C’mon..this is satire..right? Just when you think B.O.’s campaign couldn’t get more ridiculous!

  • PrincessofSnark

They have got to be kidding? I agree w/ Shawn Smith. PBS is a federally funded program. Can they use those personalities in political ads? Is that wiolation of the Hatch Act?

    • yacope

They used Big Bird to violate the The Hatch Act? There’s a joke here, I just wish I could write it ahahaha

  • cscape

it was NO ACCIDENT that Mitt used PBS and Big Bird as his example of things that the bankrupt Federal Government has no business subsidizing…… he could just as easily have said “Planned Parenthood”, playing right into the phony “War on Women” meme – and now, the Liberals are thrown off their game, and grasping at straws!

    • vetgal1970

And looking silly. They are acting as if funding a money making machine like Big Bird is a matter of great importance. No budget, huge debts? Dems say “Save Big Bird, cut the military”. Priorities?

      • cscape

it plays right into Romney’s hands…… and rather than making him look “out of touch” or “out of the mainstream” or whatever….. it is a useless ploy at this late date – the debate, which was viewed by 67 million Americans…. many of whom got a glimpse of “the real” Mitt Romney (not the one the media and the Obama campaign had been creating) for the very first time – and they liked what they saw

      • RealityBitesBack

Big Bird has more money than Romney.

        Someone else should be chanting,
“Let Big Bird fly free & save our foreign Ambassadors”

  • diskinetic

Let’s see if the Last-Generation Media pick up on this complete stupidity. I’ll be breathing normally, because holding your breath would be ill-advised.

  • Owen007

What gets me is that after years of bemoaning the rich getting a free ride, Team Obama is circling wagons around a multi-million dollar franchise that gets to benefit from government money,

By the by, unemployment was supposed to be 5.6%, gas prices lower, and the deficit cut in half – all this year. Not to mention America’s credit rating still being AAA. Would Obama care to release an ad about any of that? Yeah, didn’t think so.

  • $129448

pbs gets 12% funding equalling 445 million of tax payers money which they DO NOT need. give it to the failing schools & let PBS earn their own money. This ad is embarrassing, just like our POTUS.

    • A Willful Boy

I get what you’re trying to say, but throwing another half billion into the failing public schools is even more wasteful than PBS.

  • Bryan Ewbank

Big Bird (and Sesame Street) would, in the words of their leaders, simply move to another station if PBS is cancelled. I wonder if Obama’s campaign got permission for use of such an icon as Big Bird?

    • Shawn Smith

Considering that only about 10% of their funding comes from the federal government, talking about PBS being “cancelled” is also fundamentally dishonest. Will it be hard on them? Maybe. Can they survive? Absolutely.

Heck, not getting government money might give them an opportunity to be more independent and unbiased. Imagine that.

      • redheadgrl

They could make up that 10% with ad dollars very easily. They would have advertisers lined up in a matter of minutes.

  • louisiana_mom

So, I take it the “lady parts” campaign strategy wasn’t going so well… LMAO! They are so desperate!

  • JoH113

No way! Heheheeehheee!!! (Sounding like a Tickle-Me Elmo)

  • disqus_LASIg6epmj

This is a legit campaign ad? Oh my.

  • Snarky D

If Big Bird and his pals still need a bailout after the all the money raked in through merchandising over the years, they should rethink their business model. And if all that money is making it to Sesame Street, we should make sure Big Bird isn’t spending most of it on hookers and blow.

  • chedges

This may have been the most idiotic thing I have seen in a while. “Criminal”

  • thetawake

The ridiculousness here speaks for itself, so I’ll just commend Gov. Romney again for clearly choosing a perfect way to state that there is no length to which he will not go in seeking to cut gov’t spending at a time incomes are shrinking, bank accts pay no interest, and jobs are disappearing. PBS is a notion from a bygone era and I would de-fund it, also. The irony of this campaign running an ad that is indirectly defending PBS on pay cable is laughable at best. Jumped the shark, indeed!

  • Jimni27

Grab yourself some popcorn and go read Axelrods @ replies. Even Dems are telling him how stupid he is.

  • Dandee

Maybe POTUS can use Bert and Ernie to remind us of his evolution on gay marriage, lol.

  • JonInVa

Well, it’s only fitting. Democrats have run out of people to illegally register to vote for them. So why not go after kids too? After all, Obama just did NICK, and now this.

  • Guest

Haha…this is a real campaign commercial? I thought this was from Onion News Network. You guys have really hit rock bottom. This is a parody of yourselves. Oh my gosh…this may be the singular stupidest campaign commercial ever. I can’t believe you actually spent valuable campaign dollars on it. If I had ever given money to the DNC (Thank God that will never happen), I would be demanding my money back for airing something this incredibly stupid. Wow.

  • eric t

Posted this to the YouTube video. It’s “pending approval”. Which means it won’t be posted since they don’t believe in free speech:

“Haha…this is a real campaign commercial? I thought this was from Onion News Network. You guys have really hit rock bottom. This is a parody of yourselves. • Cosmo

We have a 14% real unemployment rate and Barry is talking about Big Bird. Awesome. There is only one serious candidate for this election.

  • NeoKong

  • Jack Deth

Romney and the RNC should do an add revealing Big Bird’s and Childrens’ Television Workshop’s financial wealth through sales and trademarks over the decades….

Surprise!… Big Bird IS the 1%!!!

  • Yeeheecom

So that’s why liberals are fighting against voter id to attract grade school children to vote for Obama. I guess the Illegals and all the dead people won’t be enough to get him reelected.

  • orringtonmom (D)

this is appalling and yet so unsurprising at the same time. can’t wait until grown ups are running the country again…

  • SansMercy

Will you tell me how to get to Seseme Street? Because the POTUS is there watching his campaign dumpster-dive with Oscar.

  • hwy505

The Obama Campaign – desperation sets in! Between this and running around calling Romney a liar – it’s like watching a 5-year old throw a tantrum.

    • TexasMom2012

Exactly! Imagine how much more childish the Obama campaign will look after adult budget wonk Ryan debates senile “Just Joe” old Biden!

  • Joe W.

I say this with ass “due” respect, Mr. Axelrod: “Flock You!!”

  • Kenny Hitt

It’s official, folks. We are now living inside a graphic novel written by Frank Miller.

  • Tony

Doesn’t surprise me. This is the one thing ALL my lefty friends latched onto after the debate. Plays to the one’s mindless base.

  • Isaac Nelson

Why does Sesame Street need public funding? It’s monumentally successful from a financial standpoint. They made enough off Tickle Me Elmo to bankroll years of their shows.

  • Joseph Phillips

When you consider that the Obama camp believes most people have the mental capacity of the Sesame Street audience this ad makes perfect sense.

  • Claire Adams

Exactly how many wall streeters have been prosecuted by the Obama admin….?

And if you cared so much about PBS, why don’t they reveal how much the Obamas and Bidens have donated to PBS over the years. I will donate $100 to PBS if that number is over $20.

  • rant stocks

I just watch the Big Bird vid. rant over Mitt, I have never seen such a more filthy disgusting mouth coming from a person that is surrounded with small children.Alot like the Nickloden guy….Thanks Romney for shuting this filth down….. If elected.

  • Phil Livermore

  • Claude AndPam Parish

Leave it to liberals to make the obvious message into a simple minded jab at their opponents.

  • Madelyn Martine

O really needs to leave the presidency and go into comedy stand-up. I heard a speech he’s giving using Big Bird and Elmo as punch lines. His sycophants laugh adoringly, and he preens like a peacock. THIS is what he’s got. Nothing about his plans for the next 4 years, nothing about his great accomplishments of the last 4. Just Big Bird and Elmo. Come on Progs. Aren’t you embarrassed to even admit you’re voting for this empty suit?

    • ObamaPelosi

You know I actuallyl thought it was a mistake for Romney to mention Big Bird in his debate, becasue I knew that the Obama campaign was going to use it against him. But I didn’t realize how well their defense of Big Bird would help Romney. Now I’m so glad that Romney brought it up. The O campaign is impoding in their reaction with Big Bird. It’s flushing their campaign down the toilet and it’s all from Obama’s own doing.

      • 1irishdell

I feel like everything that Romney has done/said is a set up to see how BO responds. Like his Foreign Policy speech yesterday; BO is SURE to use that to prep for the next debate, and Romney will be ready with MANY, MANY other key points that O will have no response for. All I have to do is sit back and laugh! :)

  • John (it true me am)

watch bird ad now brain no working blood coming from noses

  • James Neal

The debate that just keeps on giving. Between the Excuses tour de farce and Big Nird “attack ads”, the hinges (and wheels) have come off the libtard Chicago kiddie car. The longer they remain seriously off-message, the less real damage they can do — funny how they’ve fallen into their own sludge pit. For a visual that will stay with you for awhile, just imagine Axelrod and Big Bird in a mud wrestling pit trying to tar and feather each other. That’s in effect what’s going on right now, but SHH, don’t tell him…goofy Joe is in sequestration and we need this to get through the gaffe-free zone.

  • sb36695

This ad brought to you by the man-child prezzy.

  • Josephine (D)

Instead of “Squirrel!”, it’s now “Big Bird!”

  • twolaneflash

    Flock, Fluke, Flim-Flam, Fail.
Brought to you by the letter F, as in Fraud, Felons, and Fast & Furious.

  • jdog

Dopiest ad ever made. They should put this is the Smithsonian. Do they have a museum of stupidity or vapidity?

    • PennyRobinsonFanClub

      It’s called the DNC.

  • skinnydipinacid

Today’s desperate attack ad is brought to you by the letter ‘O’.

  • jdog

Maybe they’re courting the muppet vote for those states without voter ID laws.

  • rivers

Oh boy. And we thought the Life of Julia was hilarious. I walked precincts this weekend and talked to people on the left and the right. The most striking thing that I heard from a couple of Dem women who are switching? They can’t believe how stupid the Obama campaign thinks they are and they are insulted.

    • redheadgrl

      Wow. That’s encouraging!

  • Pablo
    • ObamaPelosi

No!! I hope Obama campaign keeps the ad on air and plays it in all the swing states. It really reveals their unbelievable stupidity and their mind in what the think about the American people…that we may care more about Big Bird than our jobs!!

  • WingedBishop

Either BHO is sick of the job and the last few months have been his attempts at throwing in the towel, or he’s such a narcissist that he thinks he can coast through 4 years and an election and keep his job.

  • journogal
  • CalCon10

It could work. Play on the heartstrings. Stranger things have happened.

In other words, let’s not count our chickens.

  • ObamaPelosi

Can’t believe this is an actual Obama approved ad. Obama actually said, “I’m Barack Obama and I approve this message.” Seriously?? This is the biggest act of desperation I’ve seen from the O campaign to date. This is sad and pathetic. I thought it was an SNL parody. Apparently, it’s real, it’s very real.

  • Lori

Whoever made this ad, needs to get a job at SNL.

  • DANEgerus

BreakingNews: Big Bird the muppet refuses to be Obama’s puppet!

  • redheadgrl

Huh. Just heard Rush say that Sesame Street has just asked Mr. Obama’s team to pull the ad. 12:31pm.

  • Edward Cropper

check out my blog for big bird bonus

  • marcellucci

You’re all missing the point of the add…..
O’Bama’s Big Bird, and Romney wants to get rid of him……
So, all Big Bird’s friends, you know, the one’s with subsidized hands up theirAsses, come to defend him…..
    It makes perfect sense……….

  • Tweaver

What’s wrong with cutting NPR and PBS loose to become their own network in the free market? They would probably make a lot more money. There is no reason for our government to continue to supplement a “news” outlet when free speech is supposed to be for The People.

  • Chanah/Janine Wierz

What’s next? blame the conservatives for the pink slip that big bird may receive? Yea, OK. PBS has always called in for donations, hold yearly telethons for contributions, relax, big bird is safe, but what about our defense? Congress, please, get your priority straight, the big yellow puppet will be fine, can’t say the same for the American people!!

  • RealityBitesBack

So sad that the entitlement generation listened to a 90 minute
discussion on the economy and future of this country and the only thing
they have the intellect to talk about a week later is “Big Bird.”

Actually, the Obama enthusiasts listen for two things in any given
conversation, “what are they going to give me” and “what are they going
    to take away”. Pathetic!

  • TiLiNi

This message was approved by Obama. Good judgment there just like in your presidency.

  • Chanah/Janine Wierz

By the way, Big Bird is an independent voter, leaning to the left, teaching our youngest citizens. Unfortunatively, the majority of the teaching body has over the years become Democrats, definitively more liberal with a self serving agenda. Sorry B.B, you lose!

  • Socal71

Good thing that Romney handed Obama a thoroughly sound asswhooping in the debates, otherwise this might have mattered… NOT!

  • stillinthe60s

I didn’t know Big Bird was stuffed with straw.
