Haters go nuclear over Sarah Palin’s Columbus Day tweet

Palin-haters on Twitter have always been a particularly vile species of troll, but it seems like they brought a little extra crazy to the party for Columbus Day. Here’s the tweet that started the frenzy:

That’s it, just a few words about a legitimate national holiday — which of course was more than enough to generate frothing at the mouth from the darker corners of the Twitterverse.

Say it with us now: “Murder, M-U-R-D-E-R, murder”. If you must insult, at least do it in proper English.

https://twitter.com/MickeyBPowerPop/status/255381419587694592

https://twitter.com/_AKA_DJ/status/255380976065208320

Really? So, Palin Derangement Syndrome was just about Columbus Day? I guess that settles that.

Also, there was this guy:

Yes, it’s just a standard-issue hate tweet by a purple egg — but in this case it was tweeted 46 times (we counted), sometimes with strings of numbers and extra punctuation to avoid spam filters.

Trust us, it’s not that she can’t handle you — it’s just that you’re an annoying troll.

Classy. Really classy. We’re sure you really broke through some walls of censorship today with all of your obscenities.

Keep up the good work, haters! We at Twitchy are happy to publish all of it so that that world knows just how intelligent and civilized you are!

Par for the course for the ‘tolerant’ left. It really is a joke now, isn’t it? The No H8 crowd is the worst bunch of seething haters there is.

only conservatives are not allowed to hate and they want us to tolerate

      • nc

Aaron do you realize you substituted the word “hate” for the word “disagree?” That’s what the left has done, they change the language to suit their agenda whenever they can, and sometimes it’s so sneaky we don’t even realize it.

        • Harlan Hikaru Fox

It’s not that we don’t realize it. It’s that their lawyers are way more willing to play the Lawfare game until they win than ours are.

    • BeyondPolls

You hit the nail on the head. But I do find it funny that anything done or said by either Palin or Paul Ryan absolutely freaks out the Left.

Demonstrates the indoctrination of the public education system for the past 50 years. Libs in education have been on a mission to create disdain and hatred for America and America’s heroes for decades. Messages like these are the result of that indoctrination.

    • Monitor2112

Not quite 50 years. I started school 37 years ago, and graduated in 1988…they taught me to respect Columbus and what he means to American history in the California public school system.
I do think they started changing the way they taught students to look at Columbus probably before I graduated though.
So it has been a long time, but not 50 years…

      • http://www.facebook.com/richard.jefferies.96 Richard Jefferies

I graduated in 87, and it was just starting to creep into my High School. There were a few ultra-lib teachers that made it a point to give you a “different” opinion, but it wasn’t the rabid anti-Columbus rhetoric it is today.

      • Mr_A56

It actually started in the Universities in the 1930s. Got so bad that in 1951 William F Buckley wrote God and Man at Yale, a critique of overbearing liberalism in Yale in the 40s. From the universities it began to trickle into the mindset in the late fifties and became strong in the 1960s. Some of those those hippy ‘rebels’ became teachers and it became cool to be the iconoclastic teacher who ‘Questioned” the history we were taught. It really became stronger in the early 70s. By 1980 Howard Zinn’s ‘People’s History’ was released essentially denigrating the American history as traditionally taught and became the trendy history book for liberals and was often assigned reading in high schools.

Your personal experiences might not have seen it happen in your schools, but it began a slow and steady trickle-down infiltration in schools and culture in other parts of the country much earlier. Some places had a stronger resistance from parents and school boards, but, sadly, that resistance has been steadily eroding for years.

        • Monitor2112

Interesting. I would have thought that California (I grew up 55 miles east of :Los Angeles near San Bernardino) would be one of the first places to adopt such liberal teaching. *shrug*

Do they even comprehend that it was impossible for Columbus to kill millions of Indians in that short period of time? What is wrong with liberals….wait don’t answer that.

The left hates Columbus Day; the mistreatment of the Indians is exaggerated. The majority of the mistreatment of the Indians came from the English settlers, not the Spanish or the French. Then again, liberals don’t know history, so…

    • Aestro

Columbus himself was arrested and removed as governor of Hispaniola for his treatment of the Taino. They had initially treated the Spanish with kindness and were repaid by being enslaved, raped, and murdered.

  • TonyMitch

These comments show how truly ignorant, uneducated and indoctrinated these liberal idiots truly are. As a non-liberal in education I have been fighting this lie for 20 yrs. Especially teaching in a district that is 97% Mexican where you are not allowed to denounce anything Mexican. Liberals hate to hear the truth. They do not understand or refuse to understand Columbus never made it to North America. They refuse to accept it was the Spanish explorers and conquistadors that murdered millions of natives before the English, French and Italians came to the New World. Ask a descendent of the Aztec, Inca, Apache, Navajo or Pueblo peoples.

    • Hiraghm

It’s condescending to the native tribes to pretend they were innocent “victims” of unique European evils. The only change the Europeans brought was the technological superiority which gave them a tremendous advantage over the natives.

But, morally, the Europeans were no worse than the people already here.

The mistreatment of the Indians on the east coast maybe were at the hands of the English and French. In the west and southwest it was the Spanish.

    • Hiraghm

And in the east, midwest, west, central and south Americas, the mistreatment of the Indians was at the hands of other Indians, long before the Europeans showed up.

      • diskinetic

And don’t even mention the routine slash-and-burn farming techniques that deforested North America at the hands of the natives. Granted, it was their land, and a quick-n-easy farming philosophy but they weren’t exactly plowing it with unicorn horns filled with purple daisy dust.

Once again these people are a casualty of revisionist history. How could Columbus and his crew have knowingly spread disease among the native Americans? The germ wasn’t even discovered until after the Civil War! In Columbus’s day, they thought diseases came from ghosts or evil spirits or something. And, if they think Columbus’s discovery of America was so horrible, and the expansion of American capitalism to each border, why don’t they go home to the place of their ancestry? Oh wait, I forgot how good they have it here in the U S of A. Just another form of self-hate.

They always like to cite the alleged evils the Europeans brought, and ignore the fact that they are typing their hatred on a computer in a comfortable, well-lighted room, safe from the elements, not far from a well-stocked kitchen and refrigerator… instead of squatting in a tent in the dark, subject to the elements, because of those Europeans.

This is how the haters express their frustrations since they are non-thinkers! Haters need no good reason to express hatred because it’s instinctual like the fight or flight reaction. And since they’re all non-thinkers, it doesn’t matter if the stupid claims they make about Palin or Romney or any other conservative have any relation with the truth. It’s all about expressing their frustrations and ANYONE is a potential target. All they need is for an imaginary bullseye to appear on someone that is not saying the “Politically Acceptable” things and the haters turn into a school of ravenous piranha chasing after a blood scent in the water.

One of the unspoken truths which Academia cannot speak is that our Honored Native Americans were locked in the Stone Age; raping, killing, enslaving other tribes and slaughtering each other with wild abandoned.

And there is little evidence to suggest they would be out of it yet, had Europeans not come to the continent.

    • BeauDCrab

Your post makes it sound as if the culture that displaced the indigenous population does less raping, killing, enslaving, and slaughtering of each other.

Since you appear to recognize the need for evidence, I assume you have some for your assertions?

      • Hiraghm

Certainly; look at current US census data regarding crime, then adjust for relative populations.

        • BeauDCrab

Statistics are unavailable for the hundreds of nations that formerly existed in currently named America.

while doing your exhaustive research, did you happen to read anything about how your “peaceful” tribes raided and enslaved other tribes? no? didn’t get that far into it, huh? how about the many hundreds of other tribes in central and south american and what the governments of those countries did to them?? nothing there either, huh? just all the u.s.’s fault?

          • BeauDCrab

so when you said “hundreds of nations” you meant tribes? ahhh, okay i understand you misspoke. no problem, you’re forgiven…

            I didn’t misspeak.

The fact that you deliberately misunderstood the use of a synonym highlights your obtuse mentality.

Are you actually arguing that America obliterated Native culture in order to prevent them from enslaving each other? Really?

Are you arguing that since America isn’t alone in their abuse of indigenous people that it’s somehow ok?

What do you think I am arguing?

I am forgiven. I didn’t earn it, it was a gift given by grace. There is still time for you.

      • jetch

you’re missing the point crab, libs have this fantasy that the indigenous people were innocent, friendly and got along with everyone until the mean europeans came along and killed them all. the fact is they could be just as murderous as any european conquerer.
so to complain and hate because someone says “happy columbus day” shows a complete lack of understanding and ignorance. columbus killed a bunch of people who were killing others. they weren’t victims.

        • BeauDCrab

Citation for your “lib” fantasy? or are you making that part up?

Columbus’ “discovery” was a penetrative act. “Legitimate rape”, if you prefer.

Having said that. Michelle’s “Happy Columbus Day” deserves the same response that you would offer someone wishing you a “Happy Ramadan.”

          • jetch

boy i love how you libs always think your in college. news flash, you’re not! i don’t owe you a “citation”, this is the comment section of a blog, dummy!
what takes the cake is when you proceed to spout your own opinion as fact without any sort of proof. his discovery was a “penetrative act”?? is that something you made up on the spot or is it just the punch line for your “legitimate rape” joke??? either way, it fails.
you must have michelle malkin on the brain because the tweet was from palin not michelle.
if someone tweeted “happy ramadan”, i would ignore it because it does not apply to me. i wouldn’t waste my time spewing hate and anger at someone for tweeting that, unlike you.

          • BeauDCrab

i don’t owe you a “citation”, this is the comment section of a blog, dummy!

You owe me nothing. You owe it to yourself, and the country, to get educated.

You describe a “lib fantasy”, yet you have no idea where that idea came from. Someone else likely said it, and you thought it sounded clever so you started saying it.

Admitting that is the first step. Good luck in your recovery.

his discovery was a “penetrative act”??

There was a perfectly happy, militarily weak, but culturally sound society in place. Columbus’ “discovery” of that society resulted in genocide.

Sure, it worked out well for the white folk, but there are others with a different perspective.

I personally would never be offended by anyone [Palin too, sorry about that.] wishing their followers a happy ____. But it would be good if once in a while, people would stop and realize that what is true for some, isn’t necessarily true for all.

Columbus is not a hero for everyone, perhaps not even for most.

          • jetch

yeah, again you are weak in facts.
the lib fantasy i was talking about is the notion that all the indians got along and were happy and one with the earth which is clearly and undeniably false. the different tribes raided, killed and enslaved other weaker tribes all the time. why don’t *you* educate yourself on this bit of history.
in your next paragraph you *prove* what i said earlier by repeating the lib fantasy “perfectly happy, militarily weak and culturally sound society”. that is nothing but pure fantasy! again educate yourself before asking others to do the same.
instead of asking others to not say happy ______, so as not to offend certain people, why not ask those certain people to get over it! don’t be so sensitive and stop worry about someone saying happy _____. that seems like a win-win situation, no?

          • BeauDCrab

I don’t know who you think said that the natives all got along, but it wasn’t me. These nations were living their lives just fine. They didn’t need assistance from a group of Euros who only really wanted the wealth of the land. As warlike as you maintain the tribes were, they were mighty helpful to the whites in Massachusetts.

Who do you think took more scalps? Natives or Euros? Take your time.

Are you arguing that the fact that tribes warred means they deserved to be eliminated?

instead of asking others to not say happy ______, so as not to offend certain people, why not ask those certain people to get over it! don’t be so sensitive and stop worry about someone saying happy _____. that seems like a win-win situation, no?

Quite the tough guy, aren’t you? Again, I never posted what you read. The retreads that tweeted foulness to Palin were obviously out of line. That goes without saying.
You are right that in America we have the right to say whatever we like, no matter how insensitive, racist, inflammatory, or downright ignorant. You have the right to call me names and insult my intelligence from the safety of your mom’s basement. And God Bless you for it.
But most people, when they reach a certain age, realize that some things are better left unsaid, like most of the abusive stuff you post. We can’t celebrate free speech, then get our manties in a bunch should someone say something we disagree with.
Simply because a few “libs”, as you call them, decided to make asses out of themselves on the intertoobs, doesn’t mean that “libs” universally agree. That’s a hard concept, so I’ll forgive you if you can’t get it at first.

Everyone brings their own history to every interchange. Being sensitive to others’ histories isn’t “required”, it’s simple maturity.

The left is unhinged, the lemmings are running around WITHOUT the piper, lashing out at anything

  • Bill Dalasio

The wild ignorance of the modern left really is pretty stunning. Look, whatever you want to say about Columbus, the massive loss of life by Native Americans after contact with Europeans largely didn’t happen from “murder”. The major driver was disease. The Europeans had diseases which they had immunities built up to that the Native Americans didn’t. Just the act of coming into contact with them is what caused the epidemics. But, this was centuries before the modern germ theory of disease. Neither the Europeans nor the Native Americans could have had any idea that that was happening. No rational or sane definition of “murder” includes the act of simply coming into contact with someone. But, the modern left hears about the loss of life and doesn’t bother to consider doing some research because that would interfere with their “transgressive reinterpretation” (How transgressive or reinterpretive can something really be when its the standard schlock you hear from a college sophomore?) that they derive their unearned sense of superiority to the “sheeple”. I won’t get into how demeaning their interpretation is to the Native Americans, who deserve to be treated as a heck of a lot more than mindless little children for the evil grown-ups from Europe to slaughter.

    • Orpheus75

Good Post. Also amazing is the fact that they will call this type of contact “murder”, yet believe in “a woman’s right to choose”, that’s not murder however Ironic.

      • Hiraghm

They love people; they hate persons.

    • Aestro

The majority of deaths can be attributed to disease, but that is no reason to pretend that Conquistadors such as Columbus were by any means good people. They stole and raped women, enslaved and looted villages, demanded tribute and tortured those that refused to comply. Columbus himself was arrested and removed from the governor position of Hispaniola for his barbaric treatment of the Taino.

It’s not demeaning to Native Americans, it’s fact. They weren’t mindless little children, but they did not have the guns, armor, horses, or military organization that the European invaders had.

Know what’s both stunning and demeaning? Someone willing to overlook a history of violence in order to prove some stupid point about political correctness.
