No pandering: Romney tells Lehrer he would cut funding for PBS; celebs moan

“Big Bird” is trending now after GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney answered PBS anchor and Denver debate moderator Jim Lehrer’s questions on government spending cuts he’d make. Eschewing the usual pander pose, Romney told Lehrer he loves Big Bird, but would end taxpayer funding for Lehrer and Big Bird’s employer.

Pearl-clutching celebs weighed in — on the side of continued federal subsidies, of course:

  • bruce mercer

the old rich white liberal people who watch pbs at the public’s expence slould buy and support it themselves

  • bruce mercer

if big bird is well liked by the public, he will find a station like cartoon network, disney, t=etal

  • Erin

Sesame Street is a money-making machine. . . Big Bird & Elmo are cash cows!! There’s no doubt that if PBS lost fed funding or ceased operation – it would only take seconds for the Sesame Street franchise to be picked up by a smart for-profit network.

  • Fire and Adjust!

Heaven forbid big bird have to fight for his own worm and not expect to feed from the regurgitating mouth of the govt

  • CalCon10

Big Bird and his buddies make big bucks with licensed toys and stuff. If you’re making big money, time to move out of mom & dad’s house, Big Bird.

    • Owen007

Perhaps the “Sesame Street” crew could redistribute some of their wealth so poor ol’ Oscar doesn’t have to live in a garbage can anymore.

      • Elaine

Sesame street is so liberal and they claim to have so much PRIVATE SUPPORT that they don’t need tax dollars. I say cut funding since we are BROKE and let the rich liberals finance them! I personally don’t like their message

    • GOPcongress

Actually, they could come up with the “Sesame Street Network” and I would bet it would be a HUGE success IF they keep the libtalk to a minimum.

    • Darrell Hahn

Nail+head= Just what you said right there.

    • Bonita Ledzius

That was my first thought last night. I have 5 daughters and 5 grandchildren and I know I’ve spent big bucks on Sesame Street Toys throughout the years. Why do they need a subsidy from the government? These entertainers are so stupid, and clearly need to learn some real facts…oh, you have to have a brain to learn and they don’t have one!

  • grais

    Whoopie says, “No PBS”
I guess we know someone who doesn’t donate.

    • Elaine

Take Obama’s advice there, Whoopster…. GIVE UP MORE OF YOUR OWN INCOME and SAVE big bird! DO IT!

  • marcellucci

O’Bama is stammering like Stuttering Stanley……

  • marcellucci

    O’Bama’s using his Clinton accent… pathetic….

    • Brett McMicken

is he biting his lip yet?

      • lainer51

        or something else?

  • Brett McMicken

hey, celebs! ya’ll are collectively worth untold billions. if you love big bird and pbs so much, then set up a special fund to keep it afloat. the funds can come from a portion of your salaries you get for being in a movie. case closed. put your money where your trout pouts are.

  • Brett McMicken

lol! oscar the grouch has been occupying sesame street for decades. let him get a job

    • Stephen Greer

Occupy Sesame Street!!! LOL. You win! You win!

    • $30736095

  • W Randall

If the LA types are so concerned about PBS and Big Bird, they can put their money where their mouths are (or in this case thumbs). PBS is non-profit and would be happy to take their tax exempt donations.

  • Dan Smith

Good. Sesame street is a huge brand name. Has been for decades. Why on earth would a brand like that need a government check?

Unless maybe the licenses go to their buddies to make a killing selling plastic crap with that name?

  • TugboatPhil

Let’s give Big Bird a new gig at Chik-Fil-A!

  • Hello Jerry (D)

I didn’t know people still watched PBS. At least those with brains.

    • redheadgrl

I like the drama Downton Abbey, but watch it on Netflix. heh.

      • orringtonmom (D)

there have been some good shows on pbs, documentaries, etc but networks have more money than pbs and churn out garbage. this puts a hole in the idea that quality is based on funding.

        • Hiraghm

The same is true of the educational system

          • orringtonmom (D)

  • louisiana_mom

Big Bird is so popular, it shouldn’t have any difficulty finding sponsors, fortunately, the same cannot be said for the rest of PBS’s lineup!

    • vetgal1970

Juan is having the last laugh.

      • louisiana_mom

Hey! What’s up with TRP? I haven’t been able to get on all night.

        • vetgal1970

Me either, I don’t know why. I got something about a HUB error, it happened the other day also. Bummer too I wanted to watch the debate there.

          • louisiana_mom

Me too. Have a good night in case I don’t read ya’ again. :-)

  • BeautifulAmerica

Good. Glad to hear it, Mitt. Sesame Street has been having their puppets spout the Big government party-line for years. Let those who love big government pay for it. PBS, too. We do NOT want government in our media. Don’t forget NPR and Planned Parenthood by the way.

  • J.N. Ashby

Hey, Sherri Sheppard. Why don’t you solve the whole “is the world round” mystery before you get on more complex things like political analysis?

  • orringtonmom (D)

tickle me elmo sales could support big bird and the who freakin’ sesame street neighborhood. and there seems to be a pledge drive every other day.

besides, i thought SS was brought to us by letters and numbers… and by viewers like you. thank you.

    • Hiraghm

This program is sponsored today by the letter “F” and the number “U”. (let’s not be judgmental and divisive…)

  • Jack Deth

All PBS has been good for was old Tom Baker ‘Doctor Who’ re-runs and the occasional ‘Sherlock’.

    • Aestro

Sounds like someone hasn’t seen Antiques Roadshow!

      • Hiraghm

Who needs PBS? I can watch “Lovejoy” on Youtube now…

      • Maria

Nah that show is lame. I do however like “Masterpiece Theater”.

  • redheadgrl

Big Bird’s show can pull in enough ad dollars to finance the entire PBS schedule. No subsidy needed.

  • NuckingFutsinMo

If the celebs want PBS to survive, all they need to do is reach into their own pockets. I’m sure they could come up with the funding if it was THAT important.

    • vetgal1970

Ditto for the Arts and Humanities funding, buh bye ‘cowboy poetry’ festival Harry Reid will miss you. When money is tight, you pay the necessities.

  • Andre Tessier

I thought you said celebs were tweeting. Why didn’t you list any! LOL

  • Christy Arthur

hmmm licensed products, shirts toys ect.. commercial advertising (used to boast they were the only station that doesn’t, and now they do) along with private donors.. NOTHING will go wrong with pbs.

  • liverighteous

Remember, it was PBS that said, “We can manage quite fine without government funding.”

    • conservativechick

YES! They did say that and my thought was CUT THE TAX DOLLARS THEN! We are BROKE!

      • Adela Wagner

I thought the same thing, but then realized Couldn’t back then, Obama’s still trying to get the chickenshit vote.

        • lainer51

  • GOPcongress

Big Bird should do what Kermit did 30 years ago and go after some REAL contracts. Kermit made a bunch of green before going green himself.

  • Richard Marroquin

Ever hear of hyperbolic statements. C’mon you Liberal celebs. LOL

  • sunnyblack76

why is that during serious public events people on twitter always tweet about the stupid sh*t?!

    • Maria

It’s like a shiney object and they can’t help themselves. They have verbal ADD.

    • redheadgrl

probably nostalgia over big bird – it’s hard to love econ. :)

    • lainer51

      Because tweeting is stupid!!!!!!!!

  • JackD

Who said this? “I love Big Bird!”
a} Barney Frank b} Dan Savage c} Mitt Romney

  • Johnny Blade

How about PBS gets treated like people who are gubment programs… any money earned is offset by a reduction in benefits.. if you are going to pretend to be ‘speaking for the common folk’ then you should have to live by the same rules.

  • Jеrrу Thоmрsоn

Mitt ate Barry’s lunch today, and all Whoopi “rape rape” Goldberg can do is cry for Big Bird.

  • Dandee

Miss Piggy branched out, time for Big Bird!

  • $129448

Hollyweird does know that Big Bird isn’t real right?

  • Linda Wanless

Why should our government pay for a television station….if it is worth it and the people want it bad enough they will make it happen….Get the Government out of everything that comes into my house….I think it is so left wing media that they are saying that it is all about Big Bird….they aren’t even commenting on why he was saying it….

  • cp

Doesn’t Hollywood have bigger problems to worry about other than Big Bird? Get a Life! Mitt n Paul ROCK….Barack n Joe r a CROCK!! We don’t need a President who is pumped about being ‘eye candy’ for the ladies @ the view and audience. We need a President who has real solutions and actually conducts the business of the country as opposed to ‘going on the VIEW’ while dissing world leaders in N.Y. who are begging to meet w/the leader of the USA to discuss world crises! The Prez told world leaders his schedule was too full and instead goes on THE VIEW?????? Back @ ya, Whoopie…WTF!!!!

  • cp

When Obama begs the moderator to ‘move on to another topic’… know he’s in deep deep do do in being able to answer the question. NEVER before have I seen a candidate beg to be taken ‘out’ of a topic! Too funny!!

  • lillymckim

Time for the 1%ers to break out their economic patriot wallets .. and fund it yourselves!

  • Sean D. Kelly

If PBS went off the air tomorrow, Sesame St. would move to Disney or Nickelodeon and Antique Road Show would be on the History Channel (or similar).

    • Sean D. Kelly

Of course, all of the redundant left-leaning “journalism” programs would have to fare their luck in the public venue instead of out of the public’s pocket.

  • Wulfheard

Big bird and company make more than enough money at this stage of the game. Government subsidies are no longer necessary for them to stay on the air.

  • Sky Jones

am i the only one stuck on the fact that malkin couldn’t think of a better name for this than “Twitchy team?” Is she having a seizure? Has she simply done too much cocaine today? Where did she get it?

  • lainer51

Let Big Bird pay his own way like the rest of us. He is stale anyway.
