Jim Lehrer panned as ‘replacement ref’ of debate moderators

We’re not worried about Big Bird’s future as much as we are the future of that other PBS fixture. Jim Lehrer’s phone won’t be ringing anytime soon with another offer to moderate a debate. Liberals in particular seemed to have counted on the usually reliable Lehrer to act as their surrogate on stage, but even Obama’s deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter admitted that Mitt Romney was steering the ship Wednesday night.

Michael Moore and other celebs counting on Lehrer to tag-team with Obama against Romney were less than pleased.

Even those not counting on Lehrer to sway the outcome were wondering if an empty chair would have been a step up.

  • ZoriahShepard

I thought it was better than having some third party interrupting all the time. Let them talk. The more they talk the higher they soar…or the harder they fall.

  • Jack Deth

I thought Jim Lehrer did a fine job as moderator. Shutting up and letting Romney finally getting past the filter of the liberal MSM and explaining his plans and ideas. While Obama frowned petulantly, missing his Tele~Prompter and falling back on lame talking points.

This was the debate people have been waiting years to watch!

    • http://www.facebook.com/alex.loggins Alex Loggins

well stated Jack – taking charge is what CEOs do and Mitt is one heck of a Chief Exec … cannot wait until he takes office

    • AlmaAlma

Exactly. I mean, it’s all about hearing what THEY have to say, not the Moderator.

  • http://www.facebook.com/brett.mcmicken Brett McMicken

funny, all the celebs worried over pbs being de-funded by taxpayer dollars…..is there one tweet in there about them stepping in to make sure it is funded?

    • Discontentwliars

I’ve supported PBS in the past, not much lately. There are several programs I’ll support on the English speaking channel. Guess we don’t have a say what gets supported though. I hope people will support the programs they vote in, and fire those that don’t. Not necessary for governement to pay. Leads to waist!

    • http://www.facebook.com/alex.loggins Alex Loggins

reckon they prefer to spends OPM rather than do a fundraiser every year and support their PBS … oh no, they might actually have to do some work for a change rather than bilk the American people, SAY IT AIN’T SO !!! lol

  • J.N. Ashby

I don’t doubt that he may’ve sucked, but yeah, Michael. That’s Jim Lehrer’s job. To “take him down.” That’s what moderators do. They pick a side, right? That’s why they’re called “moderators.”

  • http://pennyrobinsonfanclub.net/ PennyRobinsonFanClub

Aha, this is gonna be the Left’s excuse, isn’t it? Lehrer effed up and let Romney ride roughshod over poor Barry — just like Simon LeGree on Uncle Tom.

    • TundraThunder

Let’s hope Mitt and Paul can hold on and keep up the attacks (truths), because Obama and his minions are going to throw everything including the kitchen sink from now on.

  • SAndrews

They never got to the important questions. What about boxers or briefs? What about Snooki or Honey Boo Boo? What about…… Romney’s Gaffes?!?

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/Z5XK22SPFSB6LDTMBYXIK3FCCY yahoo-Z5XK22SPFSB6LDTMBYXIK3FCCY

Hey! Lehrer gave O an extra 4 minutes, and the lefties are yapping like a pack of Pomeranians. They have a very twisted idea of what is fair…., but we knew that already.

    • http://www.facebook.com/stephen.greer.14 Stephen Greer

I actually had my stop watch out…. Obama averaged 2mins18seconds with his longest response 3mins6 seconds (he actually went over 3 mins twice and very close a 3rd time). Mitt Romney averaged 1min37seconds (his longest response was 2mins25seconds – he only went over his 2 minute allowance 4 times and other than the one I just mentioned the others were only by 2-4 seconds).
Kind of gives you a feel for these 2 candidates… One is full of bluster and spends more than it has – the other is frugal and concise with what it’s given and tends to have a surplus.

      • AlmaAlma

Excellent! I was wondering if someone was going to do that.

      • AlmaAlma

Send a note to Bette Midler

      • http://www.facebook.com/gayle.k.horn Gayle K. Horn

Thank you, Stephen. One for taking the effort to time the combatants and two for your excellent comment. I love your analogy.

  • Brian Richardson

I was pleasantly surprised that Lehrer’s questions were brief, general, and for the most part were not phrased with a liberal talking point as so often is the case with the MSM.

  • stuckinIL4now

So Lehrer sucked cuz he didn’t do the left’s bidding, didn’t help Obama and actually let Romney speak. Sometimes they surprize you!

So do the lefturds now have Candy Crowley and Bob Schieffer sequestered in a room properly brainwashing them in how to assist Obama and not let Romney talk?

    • vetgal1970

It’s amusing to see them openly admitting that they had expected the moderator to run cover for Obama.

      • $1226219

Exactly!!! I suppose we have all come to expect it so much that we forget it’s wrong. This is priceless. So much blog material here, that I’ve absolutely got to make some time to do it while it’s still fresh and pertinent.

    • Dandee

      Count on it

  • Elaine

Just like a liberal. BLAME the messenger and NOT the message! Romney kicked A$$.

  • miracleair

Let’s all forget that he gave Obama 3 minutes more on the clock to ramble.

  • http://www.facebook.com/nathan.love.794 Nathan Love

someone has finally refuted the regurgitated nonsense that is the Obama record.
Romney speaks truth and numbers to the miserable platitudes of the Obama
administration. Next, foreign policy and the string of debacles we have had to
endure will finally be brought to the American people without the filter of the
    lapdog MSM.

  • Bill

The way debates should be – directed by the candidates, not the media. I liked the format and feel this is the pathway to victory

  • Brian Roastbeef

Thing is Lehrer tried his hardest. He let Obama speak four minutes longer than Romney in total. He coached Obama on his points when he appeared lost. The left is seeking the impossible out of him. You can only coach a turd so far; you aren’t going to turn it into an All-Star.

    • $1718659

From my favorite movie (Pure Country):
“You know that little white spec on top of a pile of chicken shit? That’s shit too.” Game, set, match Romney. BHO without his prompter is totally befuddled.

    • $1226219

No kidding. The only thing left for Lehrer to do was to have taken the ball and run for Obama. Obama needs a ball carrier as he is incapable himself as an INCUMBENT.
Hello!! Carter 2.0 for reals, isn’t it? Dear God, please let it be.

  • J. Cox

Whiny libs sad that Empty chair didn’t get his covering fire and talking points handed to him,and instead got a look at the actual facts and what a sad pathetic job Obama has done over the last 4 years.I sense a lot of butt hurt going on right now.I hope Jet Blue keeps their promise.

  • hbnolikeee

My take-away looking at these tweets is that all these smug liberals are using Lehrer as an excuse for getting their COLLECTIVE butts handed to them tonight.

  • CynicOwl

By morning, they’ll be calling him Bush Lehrer, and blaming him for Obama’s debate debacle.

  • Zefal

erza feels sorry for Lehrer because he knows he and his fellow leftists in the MSM will have to euthanize Jim for his failure to adequately protect the flailing obama.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Hank-DeCat/100001190387982 Hank DeCat

I liked the Fight Club approach — moderator isn’t supposed to HELP one side, contrary to MSNBC’s analysis — he’s just supposed to facilitate. The only people who attacks the moderator are the LOSERS.
I do like how the progs go right to attacking him on is age, btw. Typical *sshats.

  • Brandon

Obama had 4 more minutes of talking time, they’re just mad Romney had more substance and vision throughout the debate in less time.

  • Adela Wagner

I just think Jim realized that Romney has some dang gum good points there. Probably wanted to look at Oblamo and say “Well….”?

  • stuckinIL4now

I gotta disagree with the consensus here. I’m watching the debate now after hearing all the hype and congratulations and I think conservatives are giving Jim Lehrer way too much credit. In my opinion, he appears to be trying to help Obama. He’s been letting Obama go first and babble on and on and on about nothing with no time limits, while Romney has HAD to jump to get his due time. It’s a third of the way in and I’ve yet to hear Lehrer cut off or interrupt Obama while he’s tried to cut Romney off several times. And after what happened tonight, think Candy Crowley and Bob Schieffer won’t be practicing for the next two weeks on how to silence Romney better?

  • Love of Country

    Quote of the night —-
“What is Mitt Romney doing? He’s WINNING!”
… Chris Matthews …. (post debate spin room)

BTW – Lehrer rocked! I was so afraid Mitt would get hosed with biased moderation but he was treated fair and square … I LOVE IT!

  • Tanker74

Typical lefties turning viciously on Mr. Lehrer because he allowed both men to show their true character.

  • Aeffesstoo

Of course the MSM is blaming Jim Lehrer for letting Obama look so bad.

In a normal, “fair” debate, he would have ganged up with Obama against Romney.

  • Katrina

Jim Lehrer had that Drudge-linked article about how he might be biased against Romney, so I think he was trying to be extra nice and unbiased. I actually really appreciate that effort. Mostly, this was an introduction to the American people who haven’t been paying attention until today. I appreciated Mr. Lehrer continually pressing the candidates to describe how they’re different from each other. It helped to outline the clear choice before Americans in this election. Dems are trying to blame the moderator for President Obama’s failure to perform and respond. That’s just pathetic. Stop blaming and hold your president accountable, libs! He lost because he didn’t take it seriously. He is a part-time president. That’s the sad truth, and now everybody can see what incompetence looks like when you put it up next to competence and capability.

  • http://twitter.com/Sistervative Sistervative

It was good that he actually just let the men talk. That’s what America wants to see. We’ve seen tightly structured during the course of the whole campaign – this is their time to just talk to us.

  • BeeKaaay

    Heard behind the doors:
“You stupid moderator, you were supposed to let the one propagandize the audience!”

  • Dandee

Well well based on twitter vile, Lehrer must have done a good job. It was the debate format folks, but poor Obama didn’t have his prompter, lol.

  • agroulx

Jim did a fine job. He forced the candidates to stay on topic and he allowed them to speak… A debate with 2 people does not need a strict moderator. Liberals are just complaining because Romney kicked his ass. But let’s not forget that Obama spoke 4 minutes longer than Romney did…

  • SL

WAAAAA! Now the liberals are blaming Lehrer because Obama’s a blathering idiot and was proven so because he didn’t have his teleprompter in front of him. Face it liberals, Romney bitch-slapped your boy. LMAO.

  • Edward Keithly

Jim Lehrer did a damned fine job. If a lack of control benefited anyone unfairly, it was the Liar in Chief, who got 12% more time to speak than Gov Romney.

  • LeftistsAreScum

Just love how the left eats their own. Lehrer tried to save Obama several times but Obama was so bad there was saving the empty suit.
