Food stamps recipients double under Obama; Result? Selling food stamps for an iPhone 5 is all the rage

Out: #Obamaphone. In: iPhone paid for with sold food stamps. At least, according to Twitter it is. And, thanks to President Obama’s suspension of some work requirements, the number of able-bodied Americans on food stamps has doubled.

More from The Heritage Foundation:

A new report from the Congressional Research Service (CRS) confirms that food stamp participation doubled among able-bodied adults after the Obama Administration suspended the program’s work requirements. As Heritage’s Kiki Bradley notes:

The welfare reform of 1996 requires that after three months on food stamps, recipients be engaged in some kind of work activity for at least 20 hours a week. Tucked away in the mammoth 2009 so-called “stimulus” spending bill was the suspension of this requirement for able-bodied adults with no children.

The result has been that between 2008 and 2010, the number of these able-bodied adults on food stamps doubled—from 1.9 million to 3.9 million, according to CRS. (Total participation is now at roughly 47 million, or one in seven Americans.)

Yes, he did. And a result?

Yep. While that Twitter user was joking, guess what is actually happening? Twitchy reported back in April about rampant food stamp fraud. Now that fraud includes the selling of food stamps to purchase … the latest iPhone. No, really.

Asked and Twitter answers.

She’s offended. But buying an iPhone with tax-payer funded food stamps is totally fine. Other Twitter users notice a lot of iPhone use while using food stamps. Did they also cash them in to get that phone? Or are people who can afford iPhones and the expensive monthly data plans qualifying for food stamps?

President Obama, creating or saving more Peggy the Moochers.

Bingo. Let’s fix it come November.

You will never get people out of poverty when they can use the system like this. The only way you will be able to is to make it as uncomfortable as possible.

    • carla5731

Why work when you can work the system? Even when the bureaucrats aren’t actively helping to get more people hooked on benefits, they’re always ten steps behind on fraud.

      • RanierWest

my perspective would say Liberals are light years ahead on fraudulently shifting dollars for votes… it’s their sole purpose right now. Sad to say enforcement of SANITY will have a Rocky Diplomacy ahead like Greece etc

      • conservativechick

I get SO tired of seeing all the food stamp recipients out in front of the grocery store selling their “cards” on weekends. I guess you don’t need an ID for that, either? No wonder there is so much FRAUD!

        • redheadgrl

Elaine – I was wondering about this – how they sell food stamps now that they are EBT cards. I guess I assumed once you got a card, the gov’t would reload the same card on a certain day each month. Are you saying that the recipients get a new card each month? I know with the old paper booklets of stamps, people would trade and sell them, but I thought it would be more difficult with the EBT cards.

          • Netmilsmom

You report the card stolen or missing and you are issued a new card. In the meantime, every dime on the first card is spent.
It’s not hard and if you know “poor” people you see what they do.

          • redheadgrl

So, whatever wonderful government entity that administers the food stamp program just re-issues “lost or stolen” cards over and over? Geez. It’s like they condone this black market. And, I did know someone in my past that sold/traded her food stamps all the time. I guess she had a surplus or something, because her kids were never hungry.

          • Tessa

In MA they have 20,000 “missing” per month, no penalty, it is disgraceful.

    • nc

And that will never happen as long as we have a worse-than-Pravda media that will slam any attempts to reform the system as “mean” or “caring only for the rich.”

Hopefully, a Romney presidency and Republican Congressional majorities will be able to “go over their heads.” Hopefully.

    • grais

As you can tell by the attitudes of all these scammers, every bit of shame has been removed in the name of ‘not harming their self-esteem’.
They’re proud of what they can do to get whatever they can.

    • Donimal61

First, I agree, it needs to be more uncomfortable to be on any public assistance. What ever happened to it being a last resort; these people are living quite well on our dime. Second, the definition of “Poor” is really suspect IMHO, the vast majority of the poor in the US are rich by world standards, no one seems to see this.

The lib/progressive/socialist mentality has been dominant in Europe for decades, and they are now seeing how cannot work and are trying to change. Unfortunately too many (a majority in some countries) are on Government dole (addicted and entitled) which makes the politics intractible without really tough medicine. If Obama is re-elected we may be in the same boat as Europe by 2016. I pray not!

      • Penmar

I disagree, it shouldn’t be more uncomfortable for those who really need help. The people that really require an option for food stamps should be not be made to feel as though they are the dregs of the earth. That’s just wrong. What needs to be done is more stringent rules for those on food stamps, i.e., work requirement needs to be re-instated, they need to place limits on the number of cards you can request replacements for during a period of time, such as 2 in a year. I do agree that the standards which define who is actually poor and in need should be redefined. They should also start using thumb prints on the cards themselves to prevent duplicates and help curtail fraud, they need to compare the prints when you have someone coming in for food stamps and such. And make the consequences of selling your food stamps include never being able to receive food stamps again along with restitution/paying back for all the money you have gotten through the program.

        • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

They should also change what can be bought with EBT. It sickens me when I see children come into the store and buy Red Bull or Monster energy drinks, and junk food. One kid actually asked if it was allowed. I said, “Unfortunately, yes.” He asked why I said ‘unfortunately’. And I explained to him that EBT should be used to get good food, not junk food and energy drinks. I was polite, not condescending, I was just simply stating my opinion.

    • JKR

they are already uncomfortable but this is the crowd whom things “well the poor have clean running water and I’m not OK with that” thus they ain’t going to vote for you. They are the ones also “occupying” things

      • Corey Dennison

Yeah, I see what you’re doing there…trying to speak at a level above your actual education. (tipoff: trying to use ‘whom’ but failing miserably)

Don’t do that; it’s embarrassing for all involved–including you.

  • Danny Wheeler

See how screwed up the administration is?

  • Jen the Great

Someone needs to go after these people who are bragging about selling their food stamps!

    • jmiller

It would take DHHR reps to do it and if they shorten the assistance rolls they would be working themselves out of a job. Probably not going to happen.

  • Ryan Parker

I think the commentary is a bit misleading at the top. Obama’s so-called elimination of the work requirement only occurred a few months ago. I find it difficult to believe that the food stamp participation doubled in a few months. If in fact the purchase of an iPhone in exchange for food stamps did occur, its sad, but not unexpected. You’ve essentially created a sub-currency for food and people are using it such.

    • Jan Allison Finnical

Just like the black markets in many other communist and socialist countries.

    • Catchance

His elimination of the work requirement Is not exactly ‘so-called’. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) confirmed that President Obama did in fact change the rules in the 1996 landmark Welfare Reform Act despite the Obama administration’s claims to the contrary. The increase in the use of food stamps prior to the work requirement change was caused by the rampant lack of employment in the nation. The increase in the use of fraud (trading for an iPhone) is caused by his elimination of the work requirement.

    • disappearing moderate

There are two different issues here. The stimulus package included a provision suspending work requirements for food stamps. Obama’s recent “executive decree” gutted the work requirements for TANF.

      • $30423294

Isn’t it interesting that the impeached Bill Clinton (D) spoke on behalf of President Obama at the democrat national convention? Impeached ex-president Bill Clinton spoke for Barack Obama? the man who NEGATED Mr. Clinton’s entire legacy?

It makes me believe that Mr. Clinton did not care that welfare reform was his legacy.

It makes me believe that Mr. Clinton cares only about his own political viability here and now. He never wanted to reform welfare. He did what was expedient.

Mr. Bill Clinton apparently has no principles. I used to have a shred of respect for him, having perceived him as a pragmatist.

He is no pragmatist. He’s out for himself, pure and simple.

More shame on the once-great democrat party.

  • Trevor Senko

This is such bullshit!!! I go to school full time and work part time and barely make enough to pay my bills every week. I dont have insurance or assistance of any kind because i make to much, which last year i made a little over $9k. And to have these worthless dumb asses abusing the system that i pay into every week and yet i can not get help is bullshit!! i do not expect hand out and i do not like taking them either, but i pretty much live off from McDonald’s $1 menu. I am so disgusted with the way this country is turning out to be.

    • Joe_in_Jersey

You may be joining their ranks after graduation thanks to Obama.

    • Wishsong

I feel your pain, but invest some money into a good diet. McDonald’s food is disgusting. It doesn’t cost a lot to eat healthy.

      • txsrangers

their fries are scrumptious. Burger King has better burgers, though.

      • Maria

Obviously you’ve never had to scrape money together. There’s no extra money to cut from anything when you’re making $9k a year. I was there once.

      • Netmilsmom

Bull. Define “healthy”. What YOU think? Trevor is a young adult and can eat what he wants. At least he’s not eating Ramen like I did for four years of college.
It gets better Trevor, you hang in there young friend.

        • [email protected]

OK folks you’re getting off the subject, it’s about some people raping the system not this fellows diet.

    • grais

Trevor, you’ve got something they will never have. You’ve got your pride, which no amount of money can buy. Hold your head high. Your life will improve. The lives of those idiots will never be any better than they are right now. Having lots of stolen stuff is not really good for the soul.

      • Tessa

Sadly, Democrats steal people’s souls. I think we need to start calling them out in public, shame them. I wish the welfare administrators would hammer into them that other people have to work to provide their free stuff.

        • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

          Can’t shame the unashamed.

    • Donimal61

Trevor, hang in there and continue to do things the right way. Your story sounds a bit like mine (although many years ago). I worked hard my entire life and have been rewarded quite well overall. I do sometimes feel that I may be the fool for playing by the rules and always trying to do the right thing while others get rewarded for not doing anything (or worse all the wrong things). But it passes for I know in the end they are letting themselves be enslaved by government handouts and entitlements; just like the drug addict is dependent on the dealer. It may be hard to believe but at a human level I feel bad for them as I believe they are victimised by the very gov libs that purport to support them but instead leave generations of fallow ground. That being said, I am angry at how they abuse the system and see it as a threat to the well being of all of us and this great country. Government dependence is possibly the greatest internal threat to our freedom.
Please stay the course, in the end you will have more than they; you will have self-resepect, a sense of accomplishment, experience which yields true and deserved confidence and most importantly real Freedom.

    • Darla Holt-Szcinski

If you are a student making 9k how are you paying into the system? I wish i could afford to go to school. I can’t.

    • darrell caine calhoun

Be encouraged…you are not alone in this. It may seem like you are losing now but know this…you aren’t. My family and many others live with conviction, integrity and the ethic that hard work will be rewarded. There is also a valuable investment into those around you (your peers, children, etc.) that they, and maybe unbeknownst to you, are watching you in admiration and seeing your effort to live the right way.

We are struggling as well, but I keep reminding my wife and children to keep running the race set before us.

And I also encourage you…keep running this race.

  • Dessica McIntosh Mabry

OK, so, these people are bragging about manipulating the system…on a *public* social media site. Seriously?! In my humble conservative opinion the ones that have documented the fact that they’re cheating should have every single penny of public assistance stripped from them. No more food stamps. No more housing allowance. Nada. Call me cold and hard hearted but I’m NOT good with my tax dollars going to iPhones, Prada/Gucci/Louis bags, jewelry, stereo systems, etc.

    • Guest

Then you didn’t read the Heritage Foundations report. It went into effect in 2009 and Obama has extended it every year since.

  • bridee

Sums up the 47% pretty nicely, huh?

  • Howard Wolcott

So much ignorance .. Guess its easy to stay stupid than get a good education . I would put this person under the jail .

  • Paul C.

Welcome to owebama’s USA where you can get food stamps and buy anything but FOOD.

  • SabrinaHornung

The only thing more disturbing than these people’s entitlement attitude is the way some of them talk and write…heaven help us!

          • Maria

Maybe Google has a translator for “Hoodinese”.

        • Maria

If “the Hood” speaks/types as the majority of those who tweeted above do, then you’re right. I cannot be bothered to try to decipher illiterate ramblings. I shall, however, laugh at the individuals and their murdering of the American English language, sip my tea, and eat my crumpets and scones with some strawberry jam.

          How droll!

      • Corey Dennison

Funny thing is, they weren’t called “Bush phones” and used as a reason by poor folks to vote for GWB.

        Logic fail.

  • dawn

You know, that SOMEHOW, we are all gonna be called racist and haters because we are completely against this theft by fraud…oh, and the use of the “WTH-dod-he/she-just-tweet” grammar going on in those tweets. How about trading in some food stamps for some English tutoring?

    • radishthegreat

Grammar? Learning to write English properly is “acting white” and “acting white” is bad. Thanks, race hustlers!

  • Sandra Townsend

I sadly admit that after over 4 1/2 years of not being able to find a job I had to go on foodstamps. But i would never sell my foodstamps for a Iphone or any gadget or booze cigs and anything. I use them to feed my son. I would prefer work

    • Netmilsmom

THAT is what they are for!!! To give a hand up.
Pitifully, these moochers are taking the “hand out”.
Most of us have hit hard times, don’t belittle yourself. None of us mind helping you. ((hugs))

    • Corey Dennison

I hope you get back on your feet soon. Don’t give up! =)

    • Penmar

I sincerely hope that you are able to find work very soon, I certainly feel for you and millions of others in your same position. Don’t listen to the boobs that think you should be feeling shame because you are left with no other options, you are doing the best you can in the situation you have found yourself in through no fault of your own. Best of Luck to you.

  • Wishsong

I feel like I’m the only one who is happy with my crappy old non-internet phone. I realize that it’s an “image is everything” mentality, which is why these people max out their credit cards leasing the most expensive cars they can possibly afford, but geez. This obsession with having to be playing on a cell phone at all times is ridiculous.

    • redheadgrl

Yep. I hate when I get together with friends for dinner, but they have to look at their phones every 2 minutes. I’m like, “Hello, I am here in person and wanted to enjoy spending some time with you, not watch you play on your phone.” It will be interesting to see how we evolve in our face-to-face communication skills as these technology enhancements allow for quicker access to information.

  • Eliza

It is the biggest miscarriage of justice I have seen in the last 45 years.

  • vetgal1970

And last week, those same people were most likely bad mouthing Mitt Romney for not paying enough taxes. Sad

  • Brandon Carroll

The problem is there is no shame anymore for being on food stamps for a lot of people. It is becoming the status quo.

  • Janet A. Davis

Not only are these people taking from the mouths of their own children, they are also taking any hope of the American dream. God reserves a special place for people who destroy innocence.

  • Discontentwliars

It’s no wonder we have to feed the kids at school, since parents are trading foodstamps for IPHONES. Their priorities aren’t their children! ME.Me.Me.Me.MEEEE.

  • A Willful Boy

I’ll be accepting food stamps for iPhones. Dress all in black, come to my store after closing, enter through the back door, and pull the old phone out of your pocket.

  • txsrangers

These people are the devil. I got laid off 2 months ago, and even though I make over 200k a year, I still applied for unemployment and food stamps because I have kids to feed. That $460 a week wasn’t much, but it certainly kept us from starving. When I finally found a job, the checks kept coming, but I returned them because it was the right thing to do. I also had hospital bills, and when I told them I couldn’t pay right now, they asked if I wanted it written off to charity, and I said heck no! I always pay my debt. Why is doing the right thing in America becoming such a scarcity?

    • Maria

      One word: Liberalism.

      • Lou G

Yes, it was liberalism that caused this.

You do know that food stamps expanded the most under Nixon and Reagan right?

        Are they liberals now?

        • v1cious

          Naturally, no one responded.

          • Corey Dennison

Actually, there were 4 responses. You look kinda stupid with this post hanging around…

          • v1cious

Actually it’s you who made yourself look stupid. Look at the timestamps.

        • Corey Dennison

You do know that ObamAA- (responsible for 3 credit downgrades) is responsible for adding SIX TRILLION DOLLARS to the debt…right?

          • Lou G

ACTUALLY, corey, the responsibility for the fall of our downgrade according to the people that downgraded us was ALL the Rethugicant Party’s fault.

            Want to try again?

        • Maria

At least people had to work while on foodstamps back then! Now work is a bad four letter word!!

So, as Corey pointed out, what about YOUR man’s $16trillion dollar debt huh huh?

          • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

            It’s actually a bad 3-letter word.

          • Maria

          • Lou G

you mean where’s his 5.6. 10.4 of the debt is the Party of Hate in Jesus’ name aka the Republican Party’s fault.

          • Maria

You’re so misguided. Bush added $4.8 trillion to the debt in two terms vs. Obama’s $5.6 trillion in one term. When Bush took office the debt was at roughly $5.6 trillion.
Liberals are the party of hate and bad math, period.

        • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

Last I checked, the president signs the bill that has to pass the House and Senate first.

“Obamaphone” is funny considering the legislation was most used under the conservative god. No, not Yahweh the semitic war god..but Old Man Forgetful himself, the man that caused September 11th–Ronald Reagan.

but then again, conservatives are blinded by their hate for the man that looks different in the white house, so what do I know.

    • txsrangers

Boy are you ignorant. Get off the bong, get out of your mom’s basement, and go out and get a job so you’ll learn to appreciate what it means to support other people, kiddo.

      • Lou G

        Wow! talk about ignorant.

Thank you for showing that conservatives know everything everyone does every waking moment…

oh…right, you don’t. So you assume.

My mother is disabled. I quit college to take care of her while struggling to hold onto part time in this rough economy that you guys caused.

As for drugs? Sorry, I don’t even take aspirin.
Basement? No, third floor room so I can be as close to her

But hey, thanks for assuming that I get high, live in the basement and everything. Thank you for convincing me that conservatives are nice, INTELLIGENT people whom I should vote for!

        • Maria

You wouldn’t have voted Conservative anyway, hun, just be honest with yourself and us. You came here merely to troll, and that is all.

Thanks for convincing me that Liberals aren’t all hateful trolls!

          • Lou G

Actually, I have voted Republican many times in 10 years.

I was originally registered as a republican until Bush came along.

          • Corey Dennison

            Yeah…I’m calling bullshit.

          • Lou G

And you can call whatever you want. but I’m looking at my registration card from 09 13 2002 (hey what do you know? it’s been 10 years exactly!) and what’s that? it lists Party > Republican.

hmmm..funny that I have physical evidence in my hands and you’re calling bullshit.

Shall I call you guys the carders along with the birthers?

          • Donna Acosta

Considering that you think pretty poorly of the lot of us, I can’t fathom what you’re doing here at all.

          • Lou G

            Hey, I read the news.

I attempt to get both sides, even the propganda pieces from the likes Malkin and Palin and the rest of the reichwing machine.

It helps to figure out why the enemy hates America.

          • Corey Dennison

It helps to figure out why the enemy hates America.

So why do you libtards hate America so much?

          • Lou G

Could ask the same thing of you conservanazis, Corey.

See? I can name call too, and yes THIS time invoke Godwin’s Law.

            Have a good Day!

          • Corey Dennison

Hmmm…somethign isn’t adding up. You ‘voted Republican until Bush came along…”

Buuuut, Bush had already been President by the time you first voted.

You idiot libtards can’t even do simple math. By the way, do you know what a “Moby troll” is? You’re a big boy, so I’m sure you know how to use Google…

          • Lou G

But that’s okay, see I produce this proof and just like with the President, you’ll still claim its false. It’s what conservatives do. Call me a “moby troll” all you want and I’ll keep call you the American Taliban. Sounds about even.

For those that can’t read that says “Greensburg”, “5TH Ward 2nd PCT” “Party: Republican”

Oh and hey! what’s the date on there? 09 13 2002. 11 months and 27 days after I turned 18 (my math may be a little off, I haven’t slept yet.)

Who was in office from the ages of 10-17 for me? oh, right. Clinton. What did he do? Supposedly had an affair (so did Newt Gingrich with his eight wife I think, maybe ninth. i forget).

As a young, influential kid i bought into the hogwash of the reichwing that they were morally superior blah blah blah. What I didn’t realize was that morally superior meant right of the taliban.

In 2003-2004, I came out of the closet. At the same time my ID came up for renewal. When it did, I switched parties. In Pennsylvania, you have to belong to a party to vote in the primaries.

I voted for John Kerry in the Presidential election but I have voted for Republicans in local elections (Kim Ward comes to mind) unfortunately, they end up doing the opposite of what they claim when they’re running and promote big brotherism and large government.

At least the Democrats are honest about that.

          • Corey Dennison

So, in your rush to show proof, you call me (and others here) birthers.

            Wow. Just fricking wow.

          • Lou G

            Truth’s the truth.

          • Corey Dennison

Truth: I believe ObamAA- was born in Hawai’i.

There goes your dumbass “you guys are all birthers” meme. Don’t you feel stupid now? You should.

          • Lou G

sorry, Corey, but nope. Even a racist will say “i have black friends” to justify his racism.

          • Corey Dennison

Okay…how galactically stupid do you have to be? The single hallmark of being a birther is believeing that ObamAA- was born somehwre other than the U.S.

I just told you that I believe he was indeed born in the U.S., and you STILL call me a birther?

I feel so sorry for your parents.

          • Lou G

            Did I call you a birther? No, I don’t think I did.

I should have expanded on this so you’re limited intelligence could understand but you could merely be saying that you’re not a birther.

Didn’t Old Man Forgetful, Ronald Reagan say ‘trust but verify’? I have no outside proof of your claim.

          • Maria

            Thank goodness he won!

    • Catchance

You’re right… you don’t know anything. The point most people here are trying to make is that if you’re on food stamps you don’t also get to have a fancy iPhone 5 with the monthly bill for said phone to be used. A lot of working people don’t have smart phones because they can’t afford them, and it’s not fair that their taxes should pay for food stamps for someone who gets a smart phone because he doesn’t have to pay for groceries.

This has nothing to do with the so-called ObamaPhone; No one cares if people get a free phone, it’s this woman’s screeching that we mind.

    • Maria

      You’re schizophrenic aren’t you?

      • Lou G

Thank you for mocking the mentally ill.

        • Corey Dennison

Well, if you don’t want to be mocked, don’t come here and say such stupid stuff.

          • Lou G

haha. Never said I was mocked. I said the mentally changed; but thank you for more hate. I feed off the conservative hate.

          • Corey Dennison

            Never said I was mocked. I said the mentally changed;

Wow. You’re making it too easy, troll.
(by the way, what the hell is ‘mentally changed?’)

          • Lou G

That’s me typing with lack of sleep, heh.

        • Maria

          Asking is not mocking, dear.

      • Donna Acosta

I was thinking more like an Axis II diagnosis.

    • redheadgrl

True, the free phone thing started under Reagan with land lines, but it is currently marketed (or known among those on public assistance) as the Free Obama Phone. So, just as you link 9/11 to Reagan, others like the free phone to Mr. Obama.

      • Lou G

Actually, mine has fact behind it–both parts. Only conservatives, who hate Obama for whatever reason, link the “free phones” to Obama.

        • redheadgrl

And this is where your bias shows. Just because a person disagrees with another’s political views, or does not want a certain person in office, does not mean they hate said person. Since you cannot grasp that fact, I cannot have any type of rational discussion with you.

Best wishes for you and your mom.

          • Lou G

“Our job is to make Obama a one-term president.”

Why? Because McConnell hates him, plain and simple. Their jobs are to get the economy back on track. Has the GOP done this? No. Why? Because they want Obama to fail at the cost of this country.

          • Corey Dennison

No, moron. because that’s the JOB of the opposition party! The party not in power always trys to get into power, and to do that, they have to make sure the guy currently in power doesn’t get…say it with me: “re-elected!”

It’s like you’re TRYING to be this stupid or something.

“Oh, and as to “Their jobs are to get the economy back on track.“…adding 6 frickin’ TRILLION dollars to the debt and keeping unemployment above 8% for his whole term ain’t getting the job done, sparky. Yer boi has gotta go!

        • Corey Dennison

          Fact…like this?

          • Lou G

more like this, but nice try moron.

“Owing to the fact that people generally need phones to apply for jobs and enroll their children in school, and elderly citizens need to be able to call their families and emergency services, the government decided in the ’80s (under Ronald Reagan, no less) to institute the Lifeline Assistance program. In 1996, Bill Clinton signed the Telecommunications Act into law, which offered either cell phones or landline services to low-income Americans.”

The Lifeline Assistance btw, was Ronald Reagan’s way of using the Communications Act of 1934. It guaranteed that people, as it says above such as the elderly and people with children–generally low income families–had phones.

In 1996, and again in 2005 and again in 2009, it was expanded to include cell phones and basic internet service.

I know conservatives don’t like facts, but come on! Basic googling would bring this stuff up.

Basically, the Conservative Deity–Old Man Forgetful–enacted all of this stuff. In fact, foodstamps itself grew the most under REPUBLICANS Richard Milhouse Nixon and Ronald “I forget” Reagan. It decreased under the democrats Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton.

        • Donna Acosta

Really? Apparently you completely missed the Obamaphone lady at the Romney rally last week. smh. “Obama phone, Romney sucks, bad!” I’m quite confident she’s no conservative, and she definitely links her free phone to Obama. Try again.

      • Darla Holt-Szcinski

Reagan started that for the elderly and people with chronic diseases so they could call for help. These people do not need all these free minutes worth of “help”. Heard today that 80% go over their (paid for by us) plan. Somehow they can pay the extra but we have to pay the rest.

        • Lou G

Actually, it was started by a democrat–FDR–but then old man forgetful expanded on it and actually used it. then clinton expanded it to include cell phones, then BUSH and Obama expanded it to eventually to include the internet.

I’m sorry you hate low income families, btw. No wonder this country’s going to hell..

  • B Byars

There was recently a report about a woman who spent ten thousand dollars for cosmetic surgery and bought a new car and had received over forty thousand dollars in food stamps. Also, on top of that she had a job making over seventy thousand dollars per year. Going to search for this report. People need to see it.

  • Amy

I have tryed to get on food stamps, because my husband and I when both working and paying our bills barely have enough left over for food and gas to get back and forth to work, yet we are told that we make to much. Do I live in the wrong in the state??? I wanted to get off assistance when I was single cause I didn’t want to be dependante on it, but now when I need it the most to feed my son, I can’t get it cause we make to much. Now I am out of work and can’t get assistance, cause my husband makes to much. What is this country coming too???

  • Victoria Knox

I may have skipped right over the Tweet that included a link to an article about someone being busted for selling food stamps to get an iPhone5 or something on which all this tweets are based. Did someone really do this, or is it just a rumor and/or a clickbait headline?

    • Catchance

Actually, that’s not the real point that’s being made here. It’s that people who work and don’t have a smart phone (because it’s not affordable) shouldn’t have to pay (via taxes) for food stamps for someone who can afford an iPhone because they don’t have to pay for their groceries.

  • rachooo

Here’s what I don’t get: WHO would buy food stamps?

    • Brent Guthrie

Hustlers pay half the balance of an EBT card in cash or drugs. Not sure of the percentage, but they give less than the dollar to dollar value.

    • redheadgrl

There’s a whole black market of trading for cash, other things like, I’ll give you $X of food stamps if I can use your washing machine. Then the person receiving the food stamps will either a)use them herself, b)sell them at a loss, c) trade for weed, d)trade for something else, etc. The thing I don’t understand is how they do this now with the EBT cards vs. the actual books of stamps.

  • grais

    This should surprise No One.
Food stamp fraud has been in existence since the minute food stamps came into being.
Same goes for Every public assistance program.
    Always has, always will.

  • Kari OBrien

where are my food stamps? my welfare check? my Obama phone? oh, thats right..I have to WORK so all you lazy tools can have it and spend it! Get a flippin JOB!

  • Josephine (D)

My Mom works at Wal-Mart as a cashier, and according to her people frequently come through her line using food stamps, WIC, or another assistance program, but they’re dressed very nicely, sometimes designer clothes. This doesn’t surprise me at all.

  • Kate

When I was in college, I worked part-time at a grocery store. I remember seeing a family pay with food stamps, and the child (who couldn’t have been older than 4-5 years old) had his own personal cell phone. I am disgusted that our current “president” has allowed this. Talk about out of touch.

  • mlzoiss

    More proof of the 47%?

  • Chris Burr

I think that people that have been on food stamps, welfare, or other government assistance programs for over a year should have their voting privilages taken away until they can support themselves…..Then the party that promises “free stuff” can’t buy their votes in every election……

    • journogal

I always thought this, too; or at least vote only local and state, and lose federal voting privileges.

  • Kalimah Priforce

This is ridiculous. You can not buy an Iphone 5 with food stamps. Food stamp allocations did not double under Obama. This is just lunacy against poor people and especially it’s underlying racism towards poor people of color. No one is using the system, just ignorant people obsessed with public assistance. All of you should be ashamed.

    • Madelyn Martine

Who said what color they were? Obviously you’re the racist for assuming these people were all black. ANYONE who needs food stamps, SHOULD NOT be talking on an iphone.

    • Catchance

Hmmm… why do you immediately jump to the conclusion that they’re black?

I volunteer at a pregnancy center for the poor, and nearly every woman who comes in has a smart phone, expensive running shoes, fancy acrylic nails, and tattoos. I do have a smart phone, but I can’t afford the rest, so I do without.

Most of them are also on some form of welfare and WIC and our state healthcare insurance, for which my taxes pay.

Only a small percentage are black.

      • v1cious

I wish you guys would come off this lie. You claim this isn’t targeting minorities, but these tweets always highlight people who are clearly urban.

        • Corey Dennison

Maybe you’re the only one that cares about their racial status. We only care about the obvious selfishness and stupidity they display. YOU are the only one saying anything about their race.

    • Maria

You are so blind, it’s funny actually. People have witnessed such taking place. And now you throw in the race card. How expected of Liberals like yourself, not to mention racist. I pity you, truly! Open your eyes and maybe you will see the truth.

      • Donna Acosta

I love how he thinks getting on his high horse and lecturing us will somehow blind us to the truth, too. Bahahahaha!

        • Maria

          It’s the Liberal mindset, sadly.

        • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

          They all do that.

    • redheadgrl

Well, these twitters are stating they did so themselves, so I would tend to believe they are “using the system”. And no, you can’t go to the Apple store and purchase an iPhone with your EBT card, but there is a black market of cash/trading around food stamps that exists. Some sell their food stamps for cash, others barter for other items. I personally knew someone in my past that did this with her food stamps. So here’s how it works: a food stamp recipient will “sell” his/her food stamps for cash (usually less than the actual dollar amount of the food stamps), then take the cash to the Apple store to purchase the iPhone. Get it?

Also, you are a little judgmental throwing out the “underlying racism” phrase as most people on public assistance are white people living in rural areas.

    • Corey Dennison

Denial…it’s not a river in Egypt.

  • $30423294

The human species is the only species that degrades itself. All the others live within the dignity of their nature. We debase ourselves.

This is alone is enough to prove the truth of Christianity.

  • MaddMedic

Reblogged this on Freedom Is Just Another Word… and commented:
    Hope and Change!!

  • Naresh Krishnamoorti

This just goes to prove that anyone who votes for Obama is morally depraved.

  • rhonda0808

  • Maria

Wow, most of the tweeters up there seem very illiterate. No wonder they are on foodstamps.
So, our tax dollars pay for their iPhone 5 when the majority of us cannot afford it ourselves? That doesn’t seem Kosher at all. They don’t need an iPhone (I’m surprised the majority of them can even use a computer muchless an iPhone)! What they need first is an education (finishing high school would be a good start), and secondly, a job. What’s that? There are no jobs?! Vote Romney.

    • Lou G

wow..more hatred from the conservatives for the average American. surprise surprise.

So WHY do you hate your fellow man?

      • Corey Dennison

Wow…more ignorance from the uneducated libtards for the american taxpayer. Surprise surprise.

So WHY don’t you have a job and pay taxes? I guarantee you wouldn’t be this damn ignorant if you actually had to PAY for the handouts that these idiots receive, and game the system and have nicer phones than 90% of TAXPAYING Americans.

        • Lou G

Can you prove I don’t pay taxes? Can you prove I don’t have a job?

Or are you going based off my looks and assuming thus confirming what I’ve known about conservatives all along.

          • Corey Dennison

If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it’s probably a libtard duck who has no job…

          • Lou G

If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it’s probably a conservanazi duck who hates gays, women and minorities.

          • Maria

            Bad troll!

      • Maria

Not an iota of what I said was hateful. It was factual. If you don’t earn the money to buy your iPhone, you don’t need it. No, I won’t buy you an iPhone either.
Foodstamps are for food, plain and simple, nothing more. If those people abuse it, they should lose their foodstamps, because obviously they didn’t need them anyway.
If it was your money going towards other people’s foodstamps, you’d feel the same way.
And I’m not a Conservative, sweetie.

        • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

Not to mention, EBT is a part of the SNAP program. The N stands for Nutrition. An iPhone is nourishment.. said no one ever.

          • Maria

And I don’t think you can eat it..safely.

      • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

I don’t read any hate in her response. Why do you, and which context?

  • tingle007

you CAN report these people to their state health and human services department. Lets see if their twitter posts mentions their state eh?

    • Netmilsmom

      And they do nothing.

  • rant stocks

I see mass insanity in america coast to coast the last 4 years have been a wake-up call to pay attention. never give up year guns even if you have to bury one in the ground…Keep it because you just might need it….

  • Jerry Von

wow, how can career welfare thieves sell food stamps and buy a damn iphone and get away with it? There is no justice in this country anymore. They make me sick. There are needy people who cant get food stamps and assistance because of these scumbags. Great work dems, hope you are proud of your accomplishments.

  • kblue905

Yet, my brother the Stage IV melanoma patient, is still laying bricks after whole brain radiation, the removal of two 5mm tumors and having every lymph node in his upper body stripped, because he was denied SSDI and food stamps.

  • Conservativeanarchist

Doesn’t anyone find it ironic that Jefferson’s picture is on the food stamps? It should have been Wilson or FDR.

  • Corey Dennison

Wow, that’s an awesome strawman. Not much on fact or anything resembling reason…

Not everyone here is ‘religious’, and not all conservatives are Christian. Your bigotry is showing.

But please, tell us all about your life as a converted Republican…cuz, you know I always hear them use words like ‘religious reichwing.’ (Are you familiar with Godwin’s Law, by the way?)

  • Lou G

Reich is a German word cognate with the English word rich with the same meaning as an adjective, but more importantly its homonym as a noun, Reich, is usually used in German to designate a kingdom or an empire and also the Roman Empire. To some extent Reich is comparable in meaning and development to the English word realm (via French reaume “kingdom” from Latin regalis “royal”).

    hmm..who’s invoking godwin’s law again?

as for proof. that’s okay, see I produce this proof and just like with the President, you’ll still claim its false. It’s what conservatives do. Call me a “moby troll” all you want and I’ll keep call you the American Taliban. Sounds about even. For those that can’t read that says “Greensburg”, “5TH Ward 2nd PCT” “Party: Republican”Oh and hey! what’s the date on there? 09 13 2002. 11 months and 27 days after I turned 18. Anything else?

  • Corey Dennison

    hmm..who’s invoking godwin’s law again?
