Obama on his business owner slam: I didn't say that. Romney made that happen; Update: Obama doubles down in ad

The buck-passer in chief is at it again. At an Oakland, Calif., fundraiser yesterday, President Obama accused Mitt Romney of “twisting” the words in his contemptuous “you didn’t build that” slam on entrepreneurs.

Twisting, splicing and dicing? Excuse us?

Let’s take a look at the full quote, via the White House website:

There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me — because they want to give something back.  They know they didn’t — look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own.  You didn’t get there on your own.  I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart.  There are a lot of smart people out there.  It must be because I worked harder than everybody else.  Let me tell you something — there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.  (Applause.)

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help.  There was a great teacher somewhere in your life.  Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive.  Somebody invested in roads and bridges.  If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that.  Somebody else made that happen.  The Internet didn’t get invented on its own.  Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

Sorry, President Obama. With or without the full context, your utter disdain for self-made business owners is abundantly clear — even to the Democrats who put you in office. You attributed the success of American entrepreneurs to Big Daddy Government, disparaging the ingenuity, elbow grease and risk-taking that actually built America.

President Obama, Romney didn’t have to “splice and dice” that to convince Americans you attacked hard work and success. Somebody else made that happen — you.

Update:

Obama doubled down on the “out of context” argument in a whiny, defensive ad. Here’s the transcript:

Those ads taking my words about small business out of context; they’re flat out wrong. Of course Americans build their own business. Everyday hard-working people sacrifice to meet a payroll, create jobs, and make our economy run.

And what I said was that we need to stand behind them as America always has. By investing in education, training, roads and bridges, research and technology. I’m Barack Obama and I approve this message because I believe we’re all in this together.

Actually, genius, the internet was created in 1969 by the DoD so that government researchers could communicate and share information with each other more easily. Commercial use did not begin until the late 80’s/early 90’s.

    • mikeb330

And then the Internet began to “thrive” after it was fully “privatized” in 1995. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10000872396390444464304577539063008406518.html?mod=WSJ_hp_mostpop_read

The President said that it was created for us. You say it was created for DOD’s private use? That sounds different…

      • Doug

Imagine that! One of them is not telling the truth. I will give you 50 guesses to figure out who is the liar. The first 49 guesses don’t count. Hint-it is the Oblamer in chief.

    • carmijok

I thought Al Gore invented the internet.

    • Scott H-Man

More correctly, the original “internet” was created to provide the president and military the ability to communicate after a first-strike nuclear attack by the Russians and be able to launch a counter attack. ALL tax-payers paid for it’s development as a tool of National Defense.
The technology was created by the government for the benefit of the people. It was not created “so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.”
The fact that the internet became a commercial tool (like GPS) is inconsequential to why the government invested resources to develop it. Every person in America had the opportunity to take advantage of the opportunity created by internet technology. Fact is Mr President, some people are “smarter” and “harder working” and “did that”. Others, like me, were not. I do not begrudge any of them their fortunes as they have created something and benefited me and society through their hard work and investment.
Obama acts as if people/business are there to service the government instead of the other way around. He is a sad, mis-guided man.

      • shrgngatlas

Amen, Scott. And yes, there is some luck involved also. But the chance to be lucky is what drives entrepreneurs to take the risks! And better yet, when luck does smile on them, it’s a win/win for all of us.

      • Becci Springer

        Well Said.

    • nickshaw

Please! Learn something before you speak! The internet was proposed earlier than ’69 and, in fact, it was Xerox research that got it moving. The DoD didn’t “invent” TCP/IP, the real crux of the net. They ignored it until private concerns started to use it.

  • Randal Redder

He’s literally trying to twist and distort his own words. There’s no “aha gotcha” moment that puts this into some hidden context. The quote fits right into the theme and meaning of the speech. To suggest otherwise is in itself distortion.

    • Carabella1

It always astounds me how you people can see something and twist it to suit your slave agenda.

      • Don Benson

Carabella1, can you even read? Or is it comprehension that gives you trouble? The full quote shows that no “twisting” is necessary. This is a man who has never built anything on his own, and can’t understand those who have.

        • Carabella1

Yes. Don. I can read. I can also hear just fine. If you people (oops! I said it again) insist on lying about something that was so clearly stated, we’re not the ones with the problem.

If we’re all taking his words out of context, maybe he should try to explain better what he said instead of just accusing people of “twisting” his words. • Vauhxx

Mitt Romney has criticized President Obama for his “you didn’t build that line,” when it came to businesses. The president was making an “it takes a village” argument, which the Romney campaign and conservatives have roundly panned.
But in 2002, during his speech at the Opening Ceremonies at the Winter
Olympics — the games in which Romney was lauded for turning around the
management — Romney made a similar argument about Olympians.”You
Olympians, however, know you didn’t get here solely on your own power,”
said Romney, who on Friday will attend the Opening Ceremonies of this
year’s Summer Olympics. “For most of you, loving parents, sisters or
brothers, encouraged your hopes, coaches guided, communities built
venues in order to organize competitions. All Olympians stand on the
shoulders of those who lifted them. We’ve already cheered the Olympians,
let’s also cheer the parents, coaches, and communities.

    • Sheerie Knoll

That statement is true. However, we do not take a percentage of the medal, or ask that it be cut up to be given to those who did not work hard and compete, when they win. It is theirs because they earned it

      • Doug

        Right on Sheerie!!!!

      • LightSabre

        Sage observation!

    • benchbear

It’s one thing for an Olympian to acknowledge that they’re faster than their competitors, and simultaneously be thankful for family cheering them on, VOLUNTARILY taking them to early practice out of love. But it’s quite another for the president to say, in the full context of his speech, that hard work and smarts didn’t help someone achieve more business success than the next guy. That taxes you and others were compelled to pay built bridges and paid teachers’ salaries, and somehow THAT made you more successful. I think the full context of his speech, along with the full context of “the private economy is doing fine”, is even more damning than the purported excerpts.

    • SometimesWise

Do you get a direct feed from MSNBC?

    • Legalbgl

Nope. see my reply above to the same misguided comment. Romney didn’t say that. Romney acknowledge the love and support of family in an athletes life. Obama showed his contempt for American business. Your not that smart, a lot of people are that smart. So what you worked hard, alot of people work hard. He dismissed the very essence of small business, in favor of big government nannyisim.

    • http://twitter.com/VicRauch Vic Rauch

The president was NOT making “it takes a village” argument. He was clearly showing his contempt for small business owners.
For example, and these are direct quotes from his mouth about “successful” people: “you didn’t get there on your own.” “I’m always struck by people who think ‘It must be because I was just so smart.’ ” “It must be because I worked harder than everybody else.” “Somebody along the line gave you some help.” You didn’t build that, somebody else made that happen.” Over and over in his speech, he continued to show great disdain for small business owners and the hard work, financial risk taking, and long hours that were put into just about all of these small businesses. That speech was NOT about “it takes a village” argument.

At best, the weasel word wiggle Obama attempted to employ and ultimately through bad grammar failed to employ very successfully at all … that attempted to “once remove” the technical context from the real one … his overarching argument remained as always, the same. No matter how you read it, in context or not, you are still left with the conclusion that whoever pays the most for something “owns” it and that would be business owners and high income earners as they pay most of the federal taxes collected by government.
We, of the 95% that pay less than 50% of federal tax, owe them a debt of gratitude for busting their hump, being smart, being lucky or any combination of the three!
No, we don’t have to genuflect at the altar of the rich but, we (some of us who shall remain nameless!) can stop being dicks and being jealous of their success. ‘Cause that’s what it comes down to!
We also owe a debt of gratitude to the Founders of this great country for putting in place a system that allows this outcome. No country or group of people can excel when they are limited by the lowest common denominator!

I think it’s the luck part that the Socialists get hung up on. What they fail to grasp is that the CHANCE to be LUCKY is what drives much of the risk-taking!! I swear some people would actually be willing to be less well off than they are if only it would prevent the successful ones from being “rich.” Sad, really.

Oh for goodness sakes – Go listen to the actual speech – the “that” that is referred to is the precedent “roads and bridges” The idea expressed is at least as old as John Donne’s poem “No Man is an Island” and as true now as it was then.

Romney said basically the same thing as head of the Olympics: “”You Olympians, however, know you didn’t get here solely on your own
power,” said Romney, who on Friday will attend the Opening Ceremonies of
this year’s Summer Olympics. “For most of you, loving parents, sisters

let’s also cheer the parents, coaches, and communities. All right!
    [pumps fist].”

    • Legalbgl

      As I previously posted elsewhere:
Lets analyze the words. Obama was saying, very clearly, You didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. In otherwords, your success, had nothing to do with you, and 100% to do with someone else.
Romney said, You Olympians didn’t get here soley on your own power. Acknowledging the fact that (1) Olympians got here based on their effort, but that effort was (2) augmented by the love and support of family.
Compare: Obama — You owe your success to someone else. YOU Didn’t do this.
Romney — You did this, but lets not forget that your mom got up at 6:00 am to drive you 30 miles to your training every day.

    • http://twitter.com/VicRauch Vic Rauch

Brian, I have listened to that actual speech, many times! The “that” that Obama used and is referring to is the word “business.” If he meant “roads and bridges” then the correct word would have been “those.” You don’t say about roads and bridges, “that.” But you should say about roads and bridges, “those.” Then when one listens to the speech for a minute or two around this Obama “gaff” all I could hear from the president is how pompous he seems to think small business owners are. Obama should really be giving these speeches to himself! He is the one that has not had to work hard for anything that he has. So he is just thinking that everyone else that is rich has gotten there as easily as he has.

  • Legalbgl

“If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.” What is twisted about that? He didn’t say, you didn’t build that by yourself. He could have said those teachers, those roads, those bridges were instramental in you building your business. No, he showed his contempt for business owners, and is obviously trying anything to backpeddle out of it. But he can’t. Because he built this S-Storm himself.

    • johnrhett

It doesn’t matter; those roads, those bridges, those teachers were all paid for by us anyway, the taxpayers. The government was just the middleman, and not always that, either. Many roads, bridges, and schools have been privately funded (like the Golden Gate Bridge, and turnpikes – that’s how toll roads started out, privately funded). Also, everyone has access to roads, bridges, and schools, but not everyone made the effort and sacrifice to build a successful business. You might as well blame the failures on the roads, bridges, and schools, too. So where does that leave Obama’s logic, or lack thereof?

  • lainer51

you would do a great job at Sesame Street – kids love fairytales.

With Obama it’s always everyone else’s fault. So sick of it. He can never take responsibility for what he says or does. And this, whether it’s been spliced and diced or not, still insults small business owners and big business owners alike. Grow up, Obama.

The infrastructure, those roads, those bridges, those teachers were all paid for by us anyway, the taxpayers. The government was just the middleman, and not always that,
either. Many roads, bridges, and schools have been privately funded
(like the Golden Gate Bridge; and turnpikes – that’s how toll roads
started out, privately funded; and like the school that Obama’s daughters attend). Also, everyone has access to roads, bridges, and schools, but not everyone made the effort and sacrifice to build a successful business. You might as well blame the failures on the roads, bridges, and schools, too. So where does that leave Obama’s
    logic, or lack thereof?

Although we’d miss all this fun stuff, he should probably go back on the teleprompter 😀

  • BestRealAmerican

    Pathetic, sniveling little man

  • DocBrew

I also love the logical fallacy built into the statement ”
I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something — there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. (Applause.)”

You didn’t build it, government did. But there’s a whole lot of smart people and hard working people that didn’t get rewarded. So which is it, to government did it, or the person who was smarter, harder working and/or possibly “luckier” that did something different. Even if you accept the premise (which is wrong) the argument itself isn’t even correct.

Admittedly, this was a twist. Obama did go on to clarify what he meant in the very next sentence. How ever, it was a poor choice of words. A shameful verbal foupax from a man were led to believe is intelligent enough not to make

  • AaronHarrisinAlaska

After watching the video for the third time I would like to retract my previous post. His words were not twisted, the message is clear. What he said was contemptuous.

Obama is a liar, an arrogant person who I believe meant exactly what he said. Please do not miss that he also said the government did the research for the internet for all businesses so that was government also! Sounds to me he is taking a page out of Al Gore’s book, since he said he invented the internet. Obama, if you were knocking at my door and wanted to come in and see me, I would kick you off my property, oh wait, I would not do that government would.

will we ever get a president who will be willing to use the name os JESUS. i think it is so easy to say GOD. IT does not tell you where their head is at. just like the chick-fila owner. he took the high road. give us a high road president.

I am now guessing Solyndra forgot to have a government road built to thier office, and so had to go bankrupt with millions of taxpayers dollars in hand.

  • allenbarr

The Christian point of view. if president Obama is the Christian he claims to be, his words would have been, if you have a business God opened a door for you to create your business. anything else is denial. that is a Christian point of view. (ok).

  • Walter Rampton

He can’t splice and dice his way out of this one much the same way when he said the private sector is doing just fine. One thing I’d like to see in November if Romney wins is Donald Trump at his victory speech uttering those famous words. I think Romney has to much class to allow Trump to do it but it would be funny!!!!

It seems to me that the left are of the mind-set that Americans should always be playing from an even playing field. YOU ARE!!!! You are living in the most free part of our planet and all you’re doing is complaining about it. Don’t like it here? Lots of other places to live, my friends… What you choose to do with your life is up to you and YOU ALONE!!!

  • $10217524

As far as the Left vs. the Right issue, this is my take on it…… It’s tantamount to a worker heading into his boss’s office in search of a raise but unsure of whether he can achieve this on his own merits, decides to unscrupulously bring into play his own downgraded view of a co-worker in hopes of posturing himself in a better light. I’m a boss and I got here Solely on my work, not berating others! BTW, that crap NEVER works….:)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZUON6RGLUD2ZOPTXETJWZ4TQ7E Jim Gair

So he praises this “unbelievable American system that allowed you to thrive”. If it is really that unbelievable than why is he so intent on CHANGING IT ??
