Comedian D.L. Hughley tweets gun-control rant after Aurora movie shooting

Expect a lot of knee-jerk, Hollywood gun-control diatribes like this one from comedian D.L. Hughley today in the wake of the Aurora movie shooting:

Um, until two years ago when the Supreme Court overturned it, Chicago had one of the strictest gun-control regimes in the nation. How did that work out, D.L.?

In the years following its ban, Washington did not generate a decline in gun murders. In fact, the number of killings rose by 156 percent—at a time when murders nationally increased by just 32 percent. For a while, the city vied regularly for the title of murder capital of America.

Chicago followed a similar course. In the decade after it outlawed handguns, murders jumped by 41 percent, compared to an 18 percent rise in the entire United States.

One problem is that the bans didn’t actually have any discernible effect on the availability of guns to people with felonious intent. As with drugs and hookers, when there is a demand for guns, there will always be a supply.

Who places the highest value on owning a firearm? Criminals. Who is least likely to fear being prosecuted for violating the law? Criminals. Who is most likely to have access to illicit dealers? You guessed it.

Twitter users sent reality checks to Hughley. But Tinseltown elites are impervious to reality.

This tweet from a Hughley fan just leaves us…speechless. It’s all the Founding Fathers’ fault.

Mayor Bloomberg, Piers Morgan and Hollywood goons from John Leguizamo to Henry Winkler join the unseemly cries for gun control just hours after the shooting.

  • Rachel Mercier

Doesn’t Hughley and his crowd realize murder is also committed by knives and ropes? And who needs a permit or license for those?

    • TugboatPhil

To them, being stabbed, hacked and strangled to death don’t really count as “murder.” Only gun deaths are bad.

Any guesses as to deaths by auto accidents since the 60s? Is DL calling for cars to be banned, or merely made smaller and lighter so as to cause more injuries and death?

  • Kit

Hope he stays in California. Veggies grow best in the sunshine.

  • Franklin Smitty

Hey DL, you need to stop acting in movies featuring guns you hypocrite.

    • John Vaughn

Hey FS, name the last two(2) movies in which DLH appeared, where the main focus/script involved firearms.

Did you say, “Rambo”, “Die Hard w/the sequels”, etc ? Nope, he was’nt in either of those. Sorry, did’nt mean to interrupt you.

      • M. McFly

Can anybody remember ANY movies DL has been in? Ever? I thought he was 2-bit standup comedian with a failed sitcom attempt.

        • John Vaughn

Far more than that sot and drunkard, Jon Lovitz or any other you and Michelle choose to pony up. That DL may opt for roles that don’t portray him in roles murdering innocents abroad and/ or fellow americans must really piss off you and your ilk, and since your viewing only consists of has-been T, Nugent videos, I can see where you can’t discern success from failure. But hey…….fortunately, neither depends on your Nielsen Rating vote.

  • Benjamin Wilhelm

Someone should tell DL that his point about Chicago is well taken…..he should remember that Chicago has some of the most restrictive gun regulations in the country, so tell me how MORE regulation will help? How about making it easier for law-abiding citizens to defend themselves.

    • Test of Time

Ben; it’s amazing that DL can pull these loose stats of a1/2 mil-ppl were killed. However it’s the details and context the Libs casually gloss over. Point,
DL’s statement; more ppl were killed in Chicago, than Afghanistan. What he neglected to mention or willfully omitted, those deaths were mainly that of minoriety’s with drug and/or gang affiliations. Do you really or I”l restate that; does DL think just by talk and no action he could persuade Chicagos drug dealers, drug users and various gang-bangers to make a 180 change???? It’s “facts with context” NOT conjective and half-truths that change people and opinions along with good works to back it up.

  • OSW

Its the personal value system. It always is. Its never the gun, knife, blunt object, etc… The greatest weapon is the self- and morally bankrupt people can and will turn ANYTHING into a weapon with which to hurt others. Laws only apply to the law-abiding. Disarm the law abiding, and the lawless hit pay dirt.

    • No_Limit_Mexican

exactlly, thank you Nancy, not much else needs to be said.

  • Michele Pullara Allen

The theater was a “gun free zone”. Just think….if someone in that theater had a gun, they could have STOPPED the shooter in his tracks!!!

    • Adam Wiener

I mostly agree, except it would have been hard for them to shoot the suspect given the tear gas he launched in the theater, and the body armor he was wearing

      • M. McFly

Wearing body armor doesn’t make you impervious to the shock and pain of a bullet impact. A couple of shots to his body would have taken the assailant time to recover, giving more people time to escape and perhaps a chance at a close-up headshot to put the bastard down permanently.

      • RapidFire

Many of us concealed carry gun owners have lasers (Crimson Trace) incorporated into our weapon. We have extensive training and practice. Not that difficult to make a head shot or get shots along the neck and in between armor plates inserted in the jackets. Anyone with a laser can shoot accurately. A bullet shock to the head, 25 yards away, would have knocked him down and/or disoriented him. Enough time to run up and disable his ability to discharge more ammo. Even if you miss every shot, it’s Infinitely better than being slaughtered helplessly.

  • Brenda Cooper

maybe he is a jerk and doesnt realise it

  • Judith Spencer

You might as well say that forks are causing the obesity epidemic in the US. Choices are made and guns are a tool. Guns don’t kill people. People kill people. The gunman made a choice and even if he didn’t have a firearm he would’ve found another tool. No credit is given to the millions of Americans that own firearms and do not go out and gun down people. Maybe if more citizens were armed they could have stopped the madman before he killed 14 people.

  • Daniel W Rodenbach

In Re the Vote and ID….. a carry permit is only issued after you provide valid ID, you are fingerprinted and a background check is run on both your info and prints. So i would say that trumps using a school ID

  • august589

More gun control won’t control criminals; it will only disarm law-abiding citizens.

  • billh

More ppl were killed in Chicago last year than in Afganistan, cause those in Afganistan are armed with weapons, and legal, …. verses those in Chicago which are not licensed to carry, and they themselves in many cases are Illegally in this country……

  • $7316222

‘The Real’ (whatever) DL Hughley = BUFFOON. Another ‘celebrity’ who has no clue, much like the people he votes for.

  • cjoakwood

They will pry them from my cold dead hands……anyone that supports gun control in the USA should get the F….. out of this country!!! You “gun controllers” are dumber than dog feces!!! KMA

  • allenbarr

virtual unknown comedian. lets be real. he made a statement. do you think he cares. PLEASE.

  • mayorofshadyvil

It’s a bad day to talk about guns. My prayers to all involved. But a statistic like that should be countered with a statistic. How many guns were purchased legally since the 60s D.L.? The answer isn’t taking guns out of law abiding citizen’s hands, the answer is education and awareness.

    • Freddy M Whitley

that my friend will never work , good intentions but forget it ………

  • Gidget Ceslok

Gun control only controls the good people, leaving them defenseless against the bad people. So let’s ask these little celebrities how they would feel if their security guards couldn’t carry guns to protect them. So how would you feel? I mean you have them for a reason, right? The good people have guns for a reason too. Talk to obama and his goons and ask them to do something about the justice system to make harsher penalties for criminals and keep them off the streets.

  • buzzer7

Guns don’t kill people! Nuts, Criminals, pissed off spouses and the mechanically challenged folks kill people! A gun is not dangerous, in the hands of a law abiding citizen. I’ll make a blanket statement to the “Hollywoodenhead” set: ” I’ll give up my gun, when you folks start making something other then boring, violent, trashy, and stupid movies”!

    • Freddy M Whitley

right on , i’ll never give mine up , guarantee that…………….like JOHN WAYNE once said ”’ when they pry them from my cold dead fingers ”’

  • Bucky Goldstein

Gun sitting on a shelf says to itself,Lets go kill people. Not one ever said.

  • hjole

good point Hughley, how about we start with gun control in the 70 percent fatherless communities, where most the killings by gun take place.

  • Robert Hubbard

Gun control is a Liberal mantle piece…..facts are irrelevant. They know not what they speak of.

  • John Vaughn

Hey Michelle. Who is republican rep Louie Gohmert, and what do you make of his response to the Aurora shooting? Please share.

  • JSebastian

An unarmed and unsuspecting society will always be vulnerable to well-prepared maniacs. And it really does not matter what the method of attack is – a determined assailant will find a way. The government insists that all of the many security protocols in place for airports and passengers were defeated by 19 Arabs with boxcutters. And that’s why they need to see us naked and grope us today.

People need to take personal responsibility for their own security. But perhaps that also means that the operators of public spaces (private venues open to the public, like malls and movie theaters) need to be more watchful of their clientele. There are no security controls in place for most public spaces, and thus an armed assailant can only be stopped by armed defenders. If nobody is armed, then there are no defenses.

And even though I disagree that “gun control” is a feasible solution, (an attempt to disarm everyone, which merely leaves criminals armed and everyone else an easy victim to the tyranny of the physically strong and brutal) there could be additional screening of gun purchasers to ensure that they are mentally stable and can demonstrate sufficient competency in weapon handling and safety. “Mentally stable” is a term fraught with peril for liberty though – because it has the potential to be politicized. For example, I believe the best and highest use of guns is self-defense, in today’s America – and that includes the right of the people to defend themselves against the tyranny of the government.

However, it is a very real danger that a requirement for mental stability could be twisted so that a person who defends the Constitutional intent and purpose to arm citizens for this reason is deemed mentally unstable, simply because the government will perceive that person as a “threat”. Which of course would be akin to giving common street criminals the power to control gun licensing, in which case they would refuse gun ownership to applicants who evince the right to use guns to defend their persons and property from thieves and robbers.

So, after working through the exercise you are left with the unavoidable conclusion that basic freedoms should not be circumscribed by politics. Rather, a screening process should determine whether an applicant has the ability to distinguish reality from fantasy, and can reason and act rationally and exhibits a normal and appropriate range of emotions and communication faculties. Any subsequent incidents that occur in relation to a political provocation probably highlight a need for political reform. If your political actions are making healthy and rational people angry enough to commit mass murder, then the problem is your politics.

If there is no political motivation,we have to chalk it up to mental illness, which the aforementioned screening process should be designed to detect.

  • JSebastian

Mr Hughley is a comedian, so I wonder if he can make the topic of the black gun violence epidemic humorous. I doubt his comedic range extends that far.
Perhaps the black community battlefields in major urban areas are not considered relevant to the “black voices” in Hollyweird, but everyone else is the country is painfully aware of the casualties sustained there and the real and present danger that young black male violence poses to the innocent. (ie, persons of any gender or age from other races).

  • Guest

Why don’t you tell it to Al, Reggie, Community org Obama…DL? Get your ass in the ghettos…good start there!!

  • Jeremy Jay Lee Austin-Skidmore

Actually, we DO have a right to be shocked.

Shocked that we’ve become so cowed, so scared, so terrified by
irrational people’s insane actions that rather than use basic common sense gun
control (like, say, banning the insane and criminals from owning, possessing, or
being in the presence of firearms and requiring law-abiding citiᵶens from possessing
them) we simply ban them from those who can responsibly own them.

Next on the list is Chisels; Every day thousands are hurt
(maimed or occasionally killed) by chisels used as prybars and screwdrivers,
more by those using the chisels after such irresponsible use, so clearly they
must be banned. After that is flathead screwdrivers (after being used as chisels).
What comes next is yet TBD.

  • Adam Wiener

Hey D.L., since the 60’s tens of millions of people have been killed in car accidents. BAN ALL CARS! (*

  • Dave Meuchel

    Who the heck is
D.L. Hughley. And why would I give a rats a$$ what he thinks?? Before all the anti gun libs start clammering for new gun laws, let me point out there is something in most US households, virtually all US business & schools, that if mis-used, could kill thousands, tens of thousands or even millions. They are used every day to rob people around the world to the tune of billions of dollars. But I’ll guarantee that NO ONE would suggest a ban on them. Go figure out what it is……

  • SlimWich

So, here we are in liberal la la land. The only guns in the country belong to the government. How could that fact possibly dissuade this deranged individual from his intent to inflict as much pain and devastation as he desired? Just think what our ‘clever’ murderer would have done with all the explosives and chemicals he had at his home had he not been able to obtain guns. How many dead would we be counting then? Further restricting the Second Amendment will not stop these killings. It’s foolish to think otherwise.

    • Freddy M Whitley

all people will do is ”strap ” on bombs and kill more and more ………….

  • NadineWilliams

I’m so confused by people that clamor against guns. I just don’t get it. There are tons and tons of laws that are broken every single day. Just because there’s a law doesn’t mean the crime stops. Criminals don’t obey the law. All that would happen is that law abiding citizens would give up their guns and the criminals would still be armed. I’ve head them say that “if there were no guns…” = well, “if there were no drugs…” – I mean seriously…they’ve been having a “war on drugs” for how many years? People that want to break the law will.

  • $1956792

When has anyone killed or injured dozens of innocents with a rope or a knife — for all of you saying ‘why not ban ropes and knives too!’ yes, people kill people — and they do it a ok more effectively with guns.

  • John Hanover

    Oslo Toronto etc. etc.

  • Thomas Ryan

Funny that you are so stupid that you are useing two of the places with the most restrictive gun laws for your examples of why we need more of the same? Also interesting you do not distingush between innocent people being shot and scum bags being stopped with a gun. Maybe you need to stop thinking about other peoples education level and go get one yourself. You sir are pretty uneducated!

  • Freddy M Whitley

thats right gun control is not working ……….. its people plain ans simple . look at Chicago that place is a war zone , black on black one thing maybe some gang bangers will get thinned out ………
