Romney slams new media at liberal journo event; conservative new media slams back

While Hollywood celeb Don Cheadle was taking on mainstream NBC for its doctored George Zimmerman tapes, which were edited to create a false racial narrative, GOP candidate Mitt Romney was taking on new media (blogs and Twitter) for its lack of “quality control” in front of the liberal-leaning NAA/American Society of Newspaper Editors.

Weird, huh?

Via The Hill:

Mitt Romney lamented the absence of editors for “quality control” from new media on Wednesday, and noted that Twitter now provides “instantaneous reaction” to the presidential campaign.

…“Most people in my position are convinced that you are biased against us,” Romney continued. That could be a reference to his rival Rick Santorum, who has been very vocal in his opinion that outlets popular with conservatives, such as Fox News and the aggregation site Drudge Report — about which Romney seemed more positive — are biased against him in the race.

“Some people thus welcome the tumult in your industry, heralding the new voices and the unfiltered or supposedly unbiased sources,” he said. “Frankly, in some of the new media, I find myself missing the presence of editors to exercise quality control.”

Where has Romney been the last week, let alone the last decade since CBS/Rathergate? The “presence of editors” reduced quality control not only at NBC this week, but at the New York Times:

After pointed out yesterday that the New York Times had joined NBC and MSNBC in selectively editing George Zimmerman’s 911 call to make him look like a racist, a reader emailed us to note that the misleading edit was even worse in some print editions of the newspaper.

Perhaps Mitt Romney should hire someone on staff who has passing familiarity with the long-standing conservative blog meme about the MSM’s discredited “layers and layers of fact-checkers and editors.”

This is more of what we’ll get if Mittens wins this…PRAY LONG AND HARD THAT HE DOES NOT.

  • Becca Leigh

this one is easy….Romney is a liberal…even his supporters react the same way liberals do when presented with the facts and truth, they attack the messenger

    • yhxqqsn

Glad I’m not the only one who noticed that. Scary that this is the repub choice. But it’s still better to replace a lame duck marxist with a ‘progressive’ as MR is so fond of being.

    • rrtrack

You don’t know what you are talking about – you need to do some research. How does thinking that editing needs to be improved make him a liberal? did you even watch the speech? did you see the end?

      • AMSilver

I wasn’t able to find the speech.  Do you have a link?

  • ltd_2012

Romney should know that “editors” are really spin masters in the MSM. New media is the best thing that ever happened to let conservative voices be heard. I’ll fully support whoever wins the nomination, but I really have my doubts about Romney.

  • MrMicawber

Wow, not only is he ideologically a liberal; he’s flatly ignorant about the media environment he proposes to run in for the most important election in the last 100 years or so.  lol. greeaaaaaat…

  • mytimetospeak

I have almost completely quit listening to or reading the MSM. I get the majority of my news from the “New Media”. I find after doing my own fact checking, I can trust I am learning the truth from New Media outlets.

Romney would be wise to do the same if he wants to be POTUS. But he is too Liberal to begin to understand the truth.

  • Calvin Freiburger

What disturbs me is that Romney’s sucking up to the MSM. Not only is he unwilling to call out their bias to their faces, but he actually claims to have faith in them. No excuse.

However, to characterize this as a personal dig at the conservative/alternative media would be a stretch. In a paragraph that wasn’t quoted above:

“Then, I looked to Drudge or Fox or CNN online to see what stories were
developing,” he said. “Now it’s Twitter, and instantaneous reaction. In
2008, the coverage was about what I said in my speech. These days, it’s
about what brand of jeans I am wearing and what I ate for lunch.”

First off, he mentioned Drudge & Fox approvingly (and no, they’re not shills for him). But stepping back from whatever inferences we in the new media might be predisposed to make, is he wrong? Do individual Twitter accounts have quality control? Doesn’t a lot of fluff pop up and get attention? Look: Dana, Michelle and company are professionals that do a great job on Twitter. But there’s no need to get offended that Romney pointed out some of the obvious drawbacks of the MEDIUM, not the conservatives who use it. (Last time I checked, liberals tweet too…)

Lastly, given the prevalence of Romney Derangement Syndrome in some corners of the blogosphere (Red State, for example), it’s not exactly an out-there conclusion to draw that the quality control is a little lacking.

  • yhxqqsn

Nothing MR does surprises me. But he’s the “best chance we have at beating BO”.  Sad.

Romney is weak in every sense of the meaning of the word.  I’m sorry we have to actually consider him for the GOP nominee.  Nevertheless, GOP FOR ME!

  • The Bog

New media? In all honesty, the lack of professionals with journalism degrees is almost epidemic in the so-called mainstream media and the default in new media where real professionals seldom play. You really can’t expect any sort of objectivity from people who have never been taught that the ability to work past bias is a skill  and the First Amendment was not designed to hold one political party more accountable than another. That said, real journalists usually don’t hold poly sci and philosophy degrees even if they are from Ivy League schools.

  • Constance

Romney is another McCain.  Weak and willing to bend to the opposition, while kicking his base in the teeth.  Just wait until he secures the nomination.  He will completely abandon anything resembling a conservative.  And, regardless of how many people state they will hold their nose and vote for him, I believe he will lose to Obama.

  • DianaRae_FL

Have to love how this is taken out of context.

We have spent the past 2 weeks ourselves slamming the MSM for their extreme bias on the Travon / Zimmerman case.  MSM misreports the facts & social media runs with the false facts.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Romney pointing out these facts.

  • klaffner

Take a chill pill.  What Romney said was productive for all.  Stop putting out crap.  Everyone.  Stop it.  Show some class.  Have some ethics.

    • rrtrack

Not only that klaffner, but I think they have misinterpreted what he said. The work that is put out is grammatical crap, and that is what he was referring to. And he was talking about all media, and he was RIGHT!

  • Stehekin912

Mitt Romney complaining about quality control in the conservative new media?  That’s rich.

  • Twister51

Mitt’s right.  All he’s saying is that “truth” is what needs to be reported.  Of course, you liberals out there will choose to not see that; you guys don’t even know what that is anymore….

    • rrtrack

Twister, he was also saying that a lot of the stuff that comes out is grammatical crap.

      • GodsavethePeasants

“Rules for Radicals” and ” The Communist Manifesto” probably are excellent grammatically.   I’m more partial to the truth and conservative thought, even when an English teacher(most of them liberals at best) has a problem with the grammar.

  • rrtrack

I have no idea what you guys are talking about. Seems like a lot of desperation to get upset about something that is nothing.

  • HueyLives

Why is this a surprise? Romney is an elitist’s elitist. Of course he’s going to side with Big Media — every time. This guy needs to lose BIG or the middle class is gone for good.

  • GodsavethePeasants

Boy, listen to the Rombots spinning!  The fact is, Fox and Drudge are biased for Romney.  Fox would have panels to discuss how this affects Romney, how can he reach this group, on and on with very little mention of Santorum and how he could keep momentum and reach out to moderates when he was beating Romney in some primaries just a few weeks back.  They would constantly talk about when Rick should quit, when Paul and Gingrich became irrelevant weeks ago and Santorum actually had momentum.  These guys kept pushing the ‘inevitable’ candidate line long ago, making many voters give up and jump on board with entire Bush establishment.  Alas, now that he is inevitable, drop the etch-a-sketch and get something to twitter with and get with the program of going around the msm, NOT sucking up to the  commie/progressive dirt bags!!

  •!/GRHammersmith Alaskan

So I guess Mitt strapped the new media to the top of his station wagon to make some room for the MSM.

Hey Mitt, no matter what you do they are not going to ride with you.  They’re all lining up to ride in Obama’s limo.

  • reshas1

You are right, the only way he will win in Nov is with the help of the “new” media..  Watch it Mitt..

There are times when Romney, and I support him, is simply exasporating! To even begin to compare the biased, bigoted leftist scum of the old lamestream media to the vigorous and usually accurate new media which operates without the bigotry, bias and leftism of the lamestream media. It took the new media to expose the lies of Dan Rather, the lies told by NBC about the brave and courageous George Zimmerman and the degeneracy of John Edwards. Right there is enough to convict the lamestream media.

  • quietwolf

What a shocker, Romney believes in more government  control.

  • hjole

it’s pathetic if Romney is the chosen one and if it is Romney and he loses, so does the GOP and the country. It will never be the same with 4 more years of Obutthead or however many more years he wants to be king. When his coronation is complete all these GOP established heads and RINOs, big business CEO’s, Hollyweird actors and all the useful idiots will come to realize just how stupidly blind they have been in committing suicide.
