Queen Latifah set to star in remake of ‘Steel Magnolias’

Here’s the report from USA Today:

Queen Latifah has signed on to star in and executive produce a new Lifetime version of Steel Magnolias, an adaptation of the iconic play and 1989 film.

The updated project will reunite her with her producing duo, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron of Chicago and Hairspray fame. (Zadan and Meron also produce Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva and NBC’s Smash.)

Queen Latifah will take on the role of M’Lynn (Sally Field’s character) in a cast that includes Alfre Woodard as Ouiser (Shirley MacLaine’s part), Phylicia Rashad as Clairee (Olympia Dukakis’s role), Jill Scott as Truvy (Dolly Parton’s role), Adepero Oduye as Annelle (Daryl Hannah) and Condola Rashad as Shelby (Julia Roberts).

Kenny Leon (A Raisin in the Sun) is set to direct the script that has been adapted for television by Sally Robinson (Iron Jawed Angels) and is based on the play and screenplay by Robert Harling (The First Wives Club).
